  • The purpose of this study was to identify the latent profiles according to the core competencies of middle school students and to examine whether the parent-child relationship predicts the latent profiles based on the core competencies for students defined by the Korean Ministry of Education. To achieve the purpose of the study, a total of 6,065 second-year middle school students were analyzed from the fourth year of the Korean Educational Longitudinal Study (KELS 2013), which was conducted by the Korean Educational Development Institute in 2016. The results of latent profile analysis and multinomial logistic regression are as follows. First, three latent profiles (higher competency group (19.54%), middle competency group (49.03%), and lower competency group (31.43%)) were derived according to the core competencies. For all groups, the highest competency was communication ability, and the lowest was creative ability. Second, the variables of the parent-child relationship (i.e., parental academic support, emotional support, and attachment level) were significant in predicting differences among the core competency latent profiles. In particular, the emotional support of parents was found to have the greatest influence on the core competencies of middle school students. This study identified the influence of the parent-child relationship on the development of core competencies. Further, it showed that a good family relationship is important for the holistic development of adolescents.

  • This paper is a study on the perception of current competency and expected competency of engineering freshmen by extracting core competencies acquired from university education. It also aims to suggest proper way for engineering university education. This study extracts competencies in the following five areas as core competencies: 'knowledge on major area', 'cultural ability', 'foreign language ability', 'basic learning ability', 'intercommunication ability'. To achieve this purpose, this study surveyed 'C' university engineering department freshmen (584 students) with questionnaires about their perception of core competencies. The results are as follows. First, engineering freshmen perceived current competencies were weak in every area, especially their capacities in 'foreign language ability' area were perceived to be weakest. Their demand for education is the highest in 'foreign language ability' area, and the second higher in 'knowledge on major area'. Secondly, there exists meaningful difference between perception of current competency and expected competency depending on the gender, high school department (science/liberal arts), high school location, types of college admissions, and types of mathematics in NAST. According to these results, this study suggests enhancement of foreign language (English) education in engineering department, design and implementation of various educational program to overcome individual difference, promoting importance of competencies in the 'cultural abilty' and 'intercommunication abilty', necessity of continuous adjustment and complementation for engineering educational program through accumulation of feedback processes, activation of career education through engineering education and special programs.

Initial occupational key competencies had been prepared through the literature review on the occupational core competencies and the review on the key competencies by the experts in the field of technical industry had been performed to achieve the purpose of this study. The survey instrument consisting of final 9 occupational key competencies had been developed with the careful consideration for the calculation of the need for the consolidation of education using the Borich's model. The results show that principals for the technical highschool perceive the strong need for the educational consolidation regarding the all 9 occupational core competencies in the whole. However, for the specific key competency of understanding the organization and the mathematical competency, the principals of the technical meister highschool perceive somewhat differently from the principals of the specialized technical highschool. The principals in the meister highschool perceive not much need for the consolidation of education regarding the competency of understanding the organization and the mathematical competency.

  • ITS (Intelligent Transportation System) has been more popular but ITS project managements remain complex because of diverse stakeholders and multidisciplinary processes of ITS. The multidisciplinary process enforces specialized competencies on ITS project managers comparing to other system integration project managers. In this paper, we derived core competencies of ITS projects from previous researches, built the hierarchy of the competencies, and employed AHP (Analytic Hierarchy Process) surveying ITS project managers and auditors with the hierarchy. Finally, we analyzed the difference of evaluation model on ITS project manager between project managers and auditors using Mann-Whitney U test. Additionally we suggest a method of building MECE (Mutually Exclusive and Collectively Exhaustive) structure for AHP using the HoQ (House of Quality). We expect our model to give some inspirations for raising capable ITS project managers and selecting a proper project manager for an ITS project.
