An Investigation on the Concepts of Teaching and Learning in Engineering Design (공학설계의 교수·학습적 개념 고찰)

  • The purpose of this study was to explore the theory behind creative engineering design instructional characteristics. This study was conducted as a literature review to derive engineering design instructional characteristics. The results showed that there are three primary characteristics: learner-centered instructional activities, collaborative communication interactions, and multidisciplinary convergence to promote creative thinking. This study was meaningful in that it identified creative engineering design instructional characteristics based theoretical considerations of engineering design and engineering design education. Therefore, it is expected that the results of this study will contribute to the development of creative engineering design instructional models.

Convergence analysis of data-recycling LMS equalizer (데이터 재활용 LMS equalizer의 수렴성능 분석)

  • The convergence characteristics of an LMS type Equalizer whose coefficient are multiple adapted in a symbol time period by recycling the received data are analyzed. The theoretical analysis shows that the data-recycling LMS technique can increase convergence speed by (B+1) times, where B is the number of recycled data. The results of the computer simulation demonstrate that the simulation results are in accordence with the theoretical analysis and the superiority of the equalizer algorithm.

  • In this paper algorithms of frequency hopping sequences generation such as Lempel-Greenberger, optimum Lempel-Greenberger and Kumar sequences for spread spectrum communications are described. Using the scalogram based on wavelet transform, time-frequency characteristics of frequency hopped signals corresponding to the considered hopping sequences are analyzed.

  • Application of the filtered-x LMS adaptive filter to active noise cancellation requires to estimate the transfer characteristics between the output and the error signal of the adaptive canceller. We analyze the effects of estimation accuracy on the convergence behavior of the canceller when the input noise is modeled as a sinusoid.

  • In this work, we considered a compressed-sensing (CS)-based image deblurring scheme with a total-variation (TV) regularization penalty for improving image characteristics in digital tomosynthesis (DTS). We implemented the proposed image deblurring algorithm and performed a systematic simulation to demonstrate its viability. We also performed an experiment by using a table-top setup which consists of an x-ray tube operated at $90kV_p$, 6 mAs and a CMOS-type flat-panel detector having a $198-{\mu}m$ pixel resolution. In the both simulation and experiment, 51 projection images were taken with a tomographic angle range of ${\theta}=60^{\circ}$ and an angle step of ${\Delta}{\theta}=1.2^{\circ}$ and then deblurred by using the proposed deblurring algorithm before performing the common filtered-backprojection (FBP)-based DTS reconstruction. According to our results, the image sharpness of the recovered x-ray images and the reconstructed DTS images were significantly improved and the cross-plane spatial resolution in DTS was also improved by a factor of about 1.4. Thus the proposed deblurring scheme appears to be effective for the blurring problems in both conventional radiography and DTS and is applicable to improve the present image characteristics.

  • In this paper, an efficient signal interference control technique to improve the convergence speed of Adaptive transversal filter with LMS algorithm is introduced. The convergence characteristics of the proposed algorithm, whose coefficients are multiply adapted in a symbol time period by recycling the received data, are analyzed to prove theoretically the improvement of convergence speed. According as the step-size parameter ${\mu}$ is increased, the rate of convergence of the algorithm is controlled. Increasing the eigenvalue spread has the effect of controlling down the rate of convergence of the adaptive equalizer and also increasing the steady-state value of the average squared error and also demonstrate the superiority of signal interference control to the filter algorithm increasing convergence speed by (B+1) times due to the data-recycling LMS Algorithms.

  • Vessels receive stress during their navigations as well as during their cargo operations. This stress may cause damages to the hull and may result in accidents. So the hull stress monitoring system(HSMS) is recommended in order to prevent these accidents. In this paper, we manufactured fiber Bragg grating(FBG) sensor and the model ship for towing tank experiments. The strain characteristics of the model ship on the water wave were measured through the towing tank experiment. The FBG sensors and electric strain gauges were attached on the connection jig, and then the characteristics of the FBG sensor were compared with those of the electric strain gauge. The strain of model ship was increased according to the increment of the amplitude of water wave. In particular, the largest strain was measured in the center of the model ship. As the wave period increased, the strain of model ship was decreased.

  • The effects of characteristic condition number on the convergence of preconditioned Euler equations were investigated. The two-dimensional preconditioned Euler equations adopting Choi and Merkle's preconditioning and the temperature preconditioning are considered. Preconditioned Roe's FDS scheme was adopted for spatial discretization and preconditioned LU-SGS scheme was used for time integration. It is shown that the convergence characteristics of the Euler equations are strongly affected by the characteristic condition number, and there is an optimal characteristic condition number for a problem. The optimal characteristic condition numbers for the Choi and Merkle's preconditioning and temperature preconditioning are different.

It is shown that the convergence characteristics of the Navier-Stokes equations are strongly affected by the characteristic condition number. Also it is shown that the optimal characteristic condition numbers for viscous flows are larger than that in inviscid flows.
