Many patients with malignancies of the head and neck undergo radiation therapy, either as the only method of treatment or in combination with surgery. Radiation therapy has great effect in the case of fairly advanced malignancies which can't be operated radically. But the complication of radiation therapy arise because of damage to the peri- and operated area. It is fully known that irradiated tissue shows retarded healing process in the skin, mucosa and especially vascuslar tissue. The purpose of this study was to observe the healing process of irradiated free or island flap after operation. As Experimental Models, Femoral arterial and venous anastomosis (Group 1), Epigastric-island flap (Group 2) and free Epigastric falp(Group 3) with irradiated postoperative 24 hrs were made on 30 rats/group. As Control Model(Group 4), Free Epigastric flap was not irradiated after operation was chosen on 30 rats. The amount of irradiation was single fraction of 20 Gy using as linear megavoltage accelerator. Difference between Experimental and Control group was evaluated by the method of clinical examination, histopatholoical findings, biochemical analysis and DNA activity at postoperative 1, 3, 7, 14 and 28 days. The results were as follows, 1. Skin color and new epithelization in group 2 and 3 was similar to control group clinically. 2. Postoperarive patency of femoral artery and vien showed 5% and 22% of ischemity. 3. The externa, media and intima of irradiated femoral artery and vein were similar to control group histopathlogically. 4. Granulation and collagen tissue accumulation of irradiated groups were more active due to degenerative and fibrotic changes than control group at postoperative 7 days histopathologically. 5. The hydroxyproline content of all experimental groups were reduced till 14 days and the group 2 was most prominent at postoperative 7 and 28 days(p<0.05). 6. DNA activities of all groups were reduced till 3 days, but begun to recover at 7 days and more activities in control group than irradiated group(p<0.05). Based on the above results, the clinical healing process of free flaps with irradiated postoperative 24 hrs little difference from control group without complications.
This experiment was done to investigate the effects of Ojajiwhangeumja(OJWEJ) to the symptoms of senility. To prove the effects of OJWEJ we injected scopolamine(1mg/kg) to the vein of rats. And we measured the blood cells(WBC, RBC, Platelet), constituents of serum(BUN, creatinin, glucose, uric acid), endurance of films of the red blood cell to erythrocyte hemolises, the activity of cholinesterase in serum, TBA and the activity of catalase, SOD in the purified microsome of brain tissue of rats. The results were as follows; 1. The number of white blood cells, platelet was increased significantly in the group treated by OJWEJ in comparison with control group. 2. The number of BUN, creatinin, glucose of serum decreased significantly in the OJWEJ treated group compared with control group. 3. The erythrocyte hemolises in red blood cells restrained significantly in the group treated by OJWEJ in comparison with control group. 4. The activity of cholinesterase in OJWEJ treated group increased significantly compared with control group. 5. The amounts of malondialdehyde of serum decreased significantly in the OJWEJ treated group in comparison with control group. 6. The catalase in the microsome of rat brain was activated significantly in the group treated by OJWEJ compared with control group. 7. The superoxide dismutase in the group treated by OJWEJ activated significantly in comparison with control group. According to this experiment it is suggested that OJWEJ accelerates the activity of colinesterase and restrains the creation of erythrocyte hemolises and accumulation of senile substance. But I look forward to see the further research to be made.
Purpose : This study has an experiment on finding how Hyangbujapamultang advanced the learning and memory of rat to find the method to improve the failure of memory which is the symptom of dementia.Method : In the experiment, rats were divided the control group (14 rat) which medicate the excipient into the sample group (17 rat) which medicates Hyangbujapalmutang. And the learning ability test and the memorv test was practiced to using the task of radial arm maze. The learning ability test had the presupposition that, when a rat which frequents 8 tracks makes am error not exceeding one time for 3 days without a break, it passes the test.First experiment compared total days when the control group passed the test with total days when the sample group it.The memory test practiced after 24 hours when the learning ability test was over. When a rat frequents 4 tracks, the gates is cut off during 30 seconds. Here the number of error at the control group with that of the sample group.Result: In the learning ability test, the sample group needed 5.82${\pm}$0.37 days to pass the test and the control group needed 6.43${\pm}$0.67 days. In the memory test, the sample group errored 0.29${\pm}$0.37 times and the control group errored 1.86${\pm}$0.78 times. Conclusion : In the learning ability test, the sample group passed the test earlier than the control group, but any statistical correlationship couldn't be found in it. In the memory test, the sample group had the pregnant reduction of the number of error in comparison with the control group.
Purpose : Nowadays, there are many studies of growth retardation treatment by oriental medical therapy. This study was performed to evaluate the effect of Hwalhyulsungjang-san (Huoxuechengzhang-san) and KC101 on physical development in growth, Methods : 60 young (3 weeks old) male rats, whose mean weight was $46.8{\pm}0,7g$, were divided into 5 groups : groups A, B, C, and D were fed an experimental diet containing respectively Hwalhyulsungjang-san 2.5%, Hwalhyulsungjang-san 7.5%, KC101 5.0%, and KC101 10.0%, and the other group were fed an AIN-diet containing neither Hwalhyulsungjang-san nor KC101 as a control. Study of each group used 2 rats and was repeated in 6 times. Body weight, daily weight gain, dietary intake, body length, femur length, backbone length and serum concentration of IGF-I and hemoglobin were measured. Result : 1. Body weight and daily weight gain of group D (KC101 10%) were highest; dietary intake of group D was also increased by 13% over the control group. 2. Average body length of group D was increased to 1.69cm, which was 3.2% over the control group. Backbone length of group D was also increased 4% compared to control group. 3. Serum concentration of IGF-I of group D increased 17% compared to control group. 4. Serum concentration of hemoglobin of group B (Hwalhyulsungjang-san 7.5%) increased 8% compared to control group. Conclusion : This study showed that Hwalhyulsungjang-san and KC101 composed of oriental medicinal stuffs have effect on physical development in growing rats. The purpose of this study is to investigate the effects of Ginseng saponin on the cadmium which is widely distributed in the environment, results in immune system alteration. For the experiments, 125 mice of ICR strain were used. The experimental groups were divided into 5 groups a control, a cadmium alone treatment group, three Cd and saponin (10, 50, 100 mg/kg) combined treatment groups. The mice were allocated 25 to each group and observed for 8 weeks. The results of experiment are as follows: 1. Body weight growth rates during 8 weeks were as this control group 36.47%, Cd alone group 32.48%, saponin combined treatment group (10, 50, 100 mg/kg) 32.49%, 39.17%, 24.27% respectively. 2. In all groups, the relative weights of liver and kidney were increased, compared with control group. In the case of spleen, saponin combined treatment group (50, 100 mg/kg) was high to the significant level compared with a control group (p<0.05). Thymus was not. 3. On blood lymphocyte count observation, Cd alone treament group has 25.6% less than control group, and saponin combined treatment group have increasing trends. but in thymus and spleen, there was no trends like blood. 4. On antibody titer, there was no difference among groups. 5. On total serum protein, saponin (100 mg/kg) combined treatment group was high to significant level compared with control group (p<0.05), and other treatment groups have increasing trends. 6. Cd accumulation in kidney was higher than in liver, and all treatment groups were high to the very significant level compared with the control group (p<0.05), but there was no difference among groups. From the results of this study, it can be concluded that the oral administration of Cd results in alteration of immune system and Ginseng saponin prevents this effect. But, Cd accumulation was not affected by saponin.
Objective : The purpose of this study is to investigate the effect of Panax ginseng Radix herb-acupuncture on c-fos expression in each area of the hippocampus of acutely ethanol-intoxicated rats. Methods : Twenty-four male Sprague-Dawley tats were divided into untreated(normal), ethanol-treated(control), Panax ginseng Radix-treated(sample A), ethanol-and Panax gingseng Radix-treated(sample B) groups. Each group was evaluated by the changes of c-fos-positive neurons in each area of the hippocampus by using and image analyzer and microscope. Results : 1. In the CA1 area, the number of c-fos-positive neurons in the control group was diminished compared with the normal group. The number of c-fos-positive neurons in the sample B group had no marked difference from the control group. 2. In the CA2-3 area, the number of c-fos-positive neurons in the control group was diminished compared with the normal group, The number of c-fos-positive neurons in the sample B group was increased compared with the control group. 3. In the Dentate gyrus area, the number of c-fos-positive neurons in the control group was diminished compared with the normal group. The number of c-fos-positive neurons in the sample B group was increased compared with the control group. Conclusions : These results indicate that, c-fos expression in each area of the hippocampus was reduced in ethanol-intoxicated group. Treatment of Panax ginseng Radix herb-acupuncture increased this diminution. Panax ginseng Radix could be able to effect on the prevention of the amnesia and learning disability in alcoholism.
This study was designed to investigate the effects of a sensory stimulation program on the growth (weight, height, head circumference, and chest circumference), behavioral development, behavioral states, and the heart rate of the infants. A total of 23 infants of 2 weeks old were divided into sensory stimualtion group (11 infants) and control group (12 infants). The infants of sensory stimulation group had received sensory stimulation for 6 weeks. Sensory stimulation program was composed of tactile and kinesthetic stimulation. We assessed growth, behavioral state and heart rate every week and behavioral development every 2 weeks. The results were as follows: 1. Body weight in sensory stimulation group, from two weeks after the sensory stimulation program, was significantly increased more than control group, but there was no significant difference in height, head circumference, and chest circumference between the two groups. 2. Behavioral developmental score of sensory stimulation group was significantly higher than that of control group from two weeks after the sensory stimulation program. Developmental states of sensory stimulation group showed more 'high average developmental state' than the control group from 4 weeks after sensory stimulation program. 3. Behavioral states of sensory stimulation group after the sensory stimulation program, the 'sleeping state' was significantly increased more than control group. The 'awakening state' and the state of fuss or crying were significantly less than those of the control group. 4. The heart rate of the sensory stimulation group after the sensory stimulation was significantly lower than the control group. These results indicate that the sensory stimulation program decreases heart rate and improves the sleeping state to be effective on promoting the growth and development of the infants. In view of these experiments, we suggest sensory stimulation program might be considered as a nursing intervention for growth and development of the infants not only in clinical settings but also at homes and in the communities.
