  • The stability behavior of the cantilever beam carrying several masses and subjected to a follower force at its free end is investigated. The effects of the location and the mass ratio of the concentrated masses on the stability of the system are discussed. An optimal location of the concentrated mass is determined to give maximum critical follower force. Discontinuities of the flutter load are observed for the system with more than two concentrated masses.

  • This paper deals with the free vibrations of columns immersed in fluid. The column model is based on the classical Bernoulli-euler theory which neblects the effects of rotatory inerital and shear deformation. The eccentricity and rotatory inertial of the concentrated mass at the top are taken into accuont. In the governing equation for the free vibration of column, thedensity of immersed part was midified to account for theadded fluid mass. The govering differential equations are solved numerically using the corresponding boundary conditions. The lowest four natural frequencies and corresponding mode shapes are calculated over a range of non-dimensional system parameters ; the mas density ration of fluid to column, the ratio of fluid depth to span length, the ratio of tip mass to total column mass, the dimensionless mass moment of inertia, and the eccentricity.

  • Rock mass is an important engineering material. In hydropower engineering, rock mass of bank slope controlled the stability of an arch dam. However, mechanical characteristics of the rock mass are not only affected by lithology, but also joints. On the basis of field geological survey, this paper built rock mass material containing parallel concentrated joints with different dip angle, different number under different stress conditions by PFC (Particle Flow Code) numerical simulation. Next, we analyzed mechanical property and fracture features of this rock mass. The following achievements have been obtained through this research. (1) When dip angle of joints is $15^{\circ}$ and $30^{\circ}$, with the increase of joints number, peak strength of rock mass has not changed much. But when dip angle increase to $45^{\circ}$, especially increase to $60^{\circ}$ and $75^{\circ}$, peak strength of rock mass decreased obviously with the increase of joints number. (2) With the increase of confining stress, peak strengths of all rock mass have different degree of improvement, especially the rock mass with dip angle of $75^{\circ}$. (3) Under the condition of no confining stress, dip angle of joints is low and joint number is small, existence of joints has little influence on fracture mode of rock mass, but when joints number increase to 5, tensile deformation firstly happened at joints zone and further resulted in tension fracture of the whole rock mass. When dip angle of joints increases to $45^{\circ}$, fracture presented as shear along joints, and with increase of joints number, strength of rock mass is weakened caused by shear-tension fracture zone along joints. When dip angle of joints increases to $60^{\circ}$ and $75^{\circ}$, deformation and fracture model presented as tension fracture zone along concentrated joints. (4) Influence of increase of confining stress on fracture modes is to weaken joints' control function and to reduce the width of fracture zone. Furthermore, increase of confining stress translated deformation mode from tension to shear.

  • This paper is to analyze the stability of the thick plate on inhomogeneous Pasternak foundation, with linearly varying thickness and concentrated mass by finite element method. To verify this finite element method, the results of natural frequencies and buckling stresses by the proposed method are compared with the existing solutions. The dynamic instability regions are decided by the dynamic stability analysis of the thick plate on inhomogeneous Pasternak foundation, with linearly varying thickness and concentrated mass. The non-dimensional Winkler foundation parameter is applied as 100, 1000 and non-dimensional shear foundation parameter is applied as 5. The tapered ratios are applied as 0.25 and 1.0, the ratios of concentrated mass to plate mass as 0.25 and 1.0, and the ratio of in-plane force to critical load as 0.4. As the result of numerical analysis of the thick plate on inhomogeneous Pasternak foundation for $u{\times}v=300cm{\times}300cm$ and $a{\times}b=600cm{\times}600cm$, instability areas of the thick plate which has the larger rigidity of inner area are farther from ${\beta}$-axis and narrower than those which has the larger rigidity of outer area.

  • This study is concerned with dynamic characteristics of a circular ring with a concentrated mass attached. The equations of motion are set up and are solved by using Laplace transformation. The ratio of a concentrated mass to the mass of circular ring is used as a parameter. Experiment was performed by employing impulse test and the results show good agreement with those of analysis. The results of this study can be utilized in vibrational analysis of axisymmetric shells with slight asymmetries.

  • A transfer matrix method has been developed to determine the more accurate natural frequencies for the bending vibration of Bernoulli-Euler beam with linearly reduced width and a concentrated tip mass. The proposed method can be computed an infinite number of the natural frequencies using a single element. Using the differential equation, shear force, and bending moment in which can be deduced by the diverse variational principles, a transfer matrix is formulated. The roots of the differential equation are computed by the Frobenius method. The effect of the concentrated mass for the natural frequencies of width-tapered beams is examined through a parametric study, and to show the accuracy of the proposed method, the computed results compared with those obtained from commercial finite element analysis program(ANSYS).

  • The dynamic response of stiffened rectangular plate subjected to a concentrated force or mass moving at constant speed is analyzed by using finite- element method. Stiffened plates are modelled as an assembly of isotropic thin plate elements and equivalent Euler beam ones, in which the beam elements represent the stiffener effects concentrated at the attached lines of stiffeners to the plates. The Newmark's time integration method is used to obtain the dynamic response of stiffened plates. Numerical examples are given to verify the validity of the presented method and also to investigate the effects of speed and moving mass on the dynamic characteristics of stiffened plates.

  • In order to get oxidizing power enough for growth of a superconductive thin film with oxide gas, concentrated ozone was used. As a method for concentrating ozone, a method for concentrating ozone by adsorbing ozone selectively into silica-gel beads is adopted, and this concentration is analyzed by the ultraviolet absorption method, the thermal decomposition method and the Q-mass analyzing method. Thermal decomposition method is most effective for measurement of a high concentration of ozone. Ozone as concentrated by the adsorption method got to have a concentration of 97 mol % at the maximum, and it was identified that the concentration of the ozone gas was stable for the time while a thin film was formed.

  • In this paper, the mathematical model of a cut with an inverted flexible beam and a concentrated tip mass was derived. The characteristic equation for calculating the natural frequencies of the cart-beam-mass system was obtained and the motion of the system was analyzed through unconstrained modal analysis. A good positioning response of the cart without excessive vibrational motion of the tip mass could be obtained through numerical simulation using PID controller with the feedback of both the position of the cart and the deflection of the beam.
