  • The objective of this work is to study the sue of precise triangulation nets by matrix analysis in adjusting coordinates. Results of this work show that matrix analysis has many advantages, namely in terms of accuracy and efficiency. In addition to this, comparison of adjusted vlues by two different methods, a Rigorous Method and an Approximate Method, show that differences in adjusted coordinates are 1-2 mm within the mean square error. This proves that the Approximate Method has sufficient accuracy in the practical application.

  • This paper presents a target scoring method using shock wave signals, which are generated from the supersonic speed of a projectile. The shock wave is detected from three acoustic sensors located in the target plane and the difference of the delay times are measured. The target coordinates are calculated from the effective propagation of velocity (EPV) and the delay times of the shock wave; and the EPV is from the projectile velocity and the delay time. With a comparison between the measurement result and the known coordinates, the accuracy and the usefulness of the proposed scheme is validated.

  • In comparison to normal photography, oblique photography has large coverage area and is easily applicable to objects which are difficult to approach. But it has its deficiency of having to go through complex procedures of rectification. Oblique photographs are first analytically rectified, in this paper, then the coordinates of facilities are analysed.

  • In this study, we investigated the methods of computing deflection of the vertical and compared the results of deflections of the vertical computed from astronomical coordinates and GPS observations, and computed from PNU95, EGM96 geoid model. By comparing the results of the deflections of the vertical, we found out the followings; 1) The deflections of the vertical computed from astronomical coordinates and geoid models are similar to each other. 2) The difference between the deflections of the vertical computed from each geoid models was smaller than the difference of those computed from astronomic coordinates and geoid models. 3) The effects of distribution of the points on the results are less than those of the data used in the computation. If there exists reference data about the deflection of the vertical, it would be possible to evaluate the accuracy of the geoid model using this method.

  • It is not a simple task to optimize a cable stayed bridge, because it involves, in addition to the section properties, number and arrangement of cables, initial tension forces of cables, and type and height of the tower as design variables. This study deals with an optimization problem of cable stayed bridges considering initial cable forces, section properties of the girder and the tower, and coordinates of the tower. In order to avoid difficulties in dealing with numerous variables which interact mutually, separate design spaces are adopted for initial cable forces, section properties, and coordinates, respectively. Strain energy stored in the structure is used as the object function in the design of the initial cable forces, while weight of the structure is used in the design of section and coordinates. Upper and lower limits of the initial forces, allowable stresses including the effect of buckling, and lower limit of the sectional area are considered as constraints. The proposed method is applied to a fan type bridge and a harp type bridge. It is believed through comparison of the results to the previous results in the literature that the proposed method renders rational design values. It is also shown that the coordinate optimization, which is usually deleted in the optimization process, results in additional saving of materials.

  • Purpose: To compare three digital radiographic imaging sensors by evaluating the visibility of endodontic file tips with interobserver reproducibility and assessing subjectively the clarity of images in comparison with the x-ray film images. Materials and Methods: Forty-five extracted sound premolars were used for this study. Fifteen plaster blocks were made with three premolars each and #8, 10, 15 K-flexofiles were inserted into the root canal of premolars. They were radiographically exposed using periapical x-ray films (Kodak Insight Dental film, Eastmann Kodak company, Rochester, USA), Digora imaging plates (Soredex-Orion Co., Helsinki, Finland), CDX 2000HQ sensors (Biomedisys Co., Seoul, Korea), and CDR sensors (Schick Inc., Long Island, USA). The visibility of endodontic files was evaluated with interobserver reproducibility, which was calculated as the standard deviations of X, Y coordinates of endodontic file tips measured on digital images by three oral and maxillofacial radiologists. The clarity of images was assessed subjectively using 3 grades, i.e. plus, equal, and minus in comparison with the conventional x-ray film images. Results: Interobserver reproducibility of endodontic file tips was the highest in CDR sensor (p < 0.05) only except at Y coordinates of #15 file. In the subjective assessment of the image clarity, the plus grade was the most frequent in CDR sensor at all size of endodontic file (p < 0.05). Conclusion : CDR sensor was the most superior to the other sensors, CDX 2000HQ sensor and Digora imaging plate in the evaluation of interobserver reproducibility of endodontic file tip and subjective assessment of image clarity.

  • In this Study, the dynamic equation for vibration analysis of mechanical systems with kinematic constraints is derived. This equations are derived in terms of small displacements of Cartesian coordinates, and are applied to compute the dynamic response and the natural modes of the suspension system of a vehicle. The results are validated through the comparison with the results from conventional nonlinear dynamic analysis and modal test.

  • We present the analysis of space geodetic technique observation, Satellite Laser Ranging (SLR), to LAGEOS1 and LAGEOS2 for the definition of the Terrestrial Reference Frame (TRF). The data were analyzed in 7day arcs during about 9 years (2000/01/10 ~ 2008/12/29) using NASA Goddard's GEODYN/SOLVE II software. The comparison of the coordinates between ITRF2005 and TRF solutions determined in this work shows that there is no significant bias.
