  • In this study, we suggest that several approaches to evaluate the collision acceleration value of a car in the article 35 and the guideline 16 of Korean rolling stock safety regulation. There are various methods to evaluate collision acceleration such as; a displacement comparison method by the double integration of filtered acceleration data, a velocity comparison method by the integration of filtered acceleration data, an analysis method of time-velocity curve, or a differential method of time-velocity curve. We compared these methods one another using 1D dynamic simulation model composed of nonlinear dampers, springs and bars, and masses. Also, we applied these methods to a hybrid model, which is made of 3D shell element model and 2D collision dynamics model, in order to evaluate whether 1D force-displacement curve modeling for energy absorbing structures have an effect on the collision acceleration levels or not.

  • A comparison study between computational-fluid-dynamics simulation and wind tunnel test for a megawatt-class wind turbine is conducted. For the study, flow-field in wake, basic aerodynamic performance, and effect of the yaw error for a 1/86 scaled-down model of the NREL offshore 5 MW wind turbine are numerically calculated using commercial software "FloEFD" with $k-{\varepsilon}$ turbulence model. The computed results are compared to the wind tunnel test performed by the constant-velocity mode for the model. It is shown that discrepancy are found between the two results at lower tip-speed ratio and higher yaw angle, however, the velocity-defection distribution in the wake, the torque coefficient at moderated and high tip-speed ratios are in good agreement with the wind tunnel test.

  • In this paper, the use of Bayes factors and the deviance information criterion for model selection are compared in a Bayesian accelerated life testing setup. In Bayesian accelerated life testing, the most used tool for model comparison is the deviance information criterion. An alternative and more formal approach is to use Bayes factors to compare models. However, Bayesian accelerated life testing models with more than one stressor often have mathematically intractable posterior distributions and Markov chain Monte Carlo methods are employed to obtain posterior samples to base inference on. The computation of the marginal likelihood is challenging when working with such complex models. In this paper, methods for approximating the marginal likelihood and the application thereof in the accelerated life testing paradigm are explored for dual-stress models. A simulation study is also included, where Bayes factors using the different approximation methods and the deviance information are compared.

  • Background: Studies investigating the association of 2R/3R polymorphism in the thymidylate synthase 5'-untranslated enhanced region (TSER) and colorectal cancer (CRC) risk have reported conflicting results. Thus, a meta-analysis was performed to summarize the data on the potential association. Methods: Pubmed, Embase and CBM databases were searched for all available studies. Links between the TSER 2R/3R polymorphism and CRC risk were estimated by odds ratios (ORs) with 95% confidence intervals (CIs). Results: Seven case-control studies with a total of 2723 cases and 4030 controls were included in this meta-analysis. The results showed that the 3R variant of TSER 2R/3R polymorphism contributes to CRC risk in two comparison models (OR 3R vs. 2R =1.10, 95%CI 1.02-1.18, P = 0.015; OR Homozygote comparison model = 1.22 1.04-1.43, 95%CI 1.04-1.43, P = 0.012). Subgroup analyses by ethnicity further demonstrated a contribution in Caucasians with three comparison models (OR 3R vs. 2R = 1.10, 95%CI 1.02-1.19, P = 0.015; OR Homozygote comparison model = 1.21, 95%CI 1.03-1.41, P = 0.019; OR Recessive comparison model = 1.18, 95%CI 1.05-1.33, P = 0.008). However, the association in the Asian population was still uncertain due to the limited data (all P values were more than 0.05). Conclusions: Our meta-analysis suggests that the 3R variant of Thymidylate synthase 5'-untranslated enhanced region 2R/3R polymorphism contributes to gastric cancer risk in the Caucasian population, while any association in Asian populations needs further study.

  • This paper presents the comparison of the goodness-of-fit test of analytical bond models between concrete and steel or GFRP reinforcements. Bond test specimens were made by the CSA code and the rebars used in the test were steel and two kinds of GFRP rebar commercially utilized. The comparison of goodness-of-fit test for existing bond models and new proposed bond model was carried out by the least squares method. The result indicates that the new proposed bond model has better goodness-of-fit test than the existing ones.

  • This paper reports comparison between analytic and numerical simulation approaches for calculation of screening current and screening current induced field in a high temperature superconductor magnet. Bean slab model is adopted to calculate screening current and SCF analytically, while the finite element method numerically. A case study of screening current and SCF calculation are conducted with a magnet, a 7 T 68 mm cold-bore multi-width no-insulation GdBCO magnet built and tested by Massachusetts Institute of Technology Francis Bitter Magnet Laboratory. In this study, we assume the magnet is dunked in liquid nitrogen at 77 K. Furthermore, the simulation results are compared in terms of computation time and accuracy. Finally, discussion on the different methods together with the comparison between the calculations and experiment is provided.

  • In this paper, we perform a direct comparison study of real experimental data for domain rearrangement and the Cahn-Hilliard (CH) equation on the dynamics of morphological evolution. To validate a mathematical model for physical phenomena, we take initial conditions from experimental images by using an image segmentation technique. The image segmentation algorithm is based on the Mumford-Shah functional and the Allen-Cahn (AC) equation. The segmented phase-field profile is similar to the solution of the CH equation, that is, it has hyperbolic tangent profile across interfacial transition region. We use unconditionally stable schemes to solve the governing equations. As a test problem, we take domain rearrangement of lipid bilayers. Numerical results demonstrate that comparison of the evolutions with experimental data is a good benchmark test for validating a mathematical model.

  • A recently reported simple phenomenological constitutive model (SK) demonstrated comparable or better data description capability to/than one of the rigorous and physics-based models, the PTW model. The simple SK model is believed to be an efficient model for practical applications where an extensive computation is needed, and can serve as a rigorous comparison standard for the development of a physics-based model.
