Purpose: The purpose of this study was to explore and describe the experiences of career decision making by Korean nursing students. Methods: The participants were 18 nursing students from one nursing college. Data were collected through in-depth individual interviews, and the main question was, "Could you describe your experience of making a career decision?" Data from the field and transcribed notes were analyzed using Strauss and Corbin's grounded theory methodology. Results: Core category of nursing students' experiences in making career decisions was 'trying to find the way of being a nurse'. Action/interaction strategies were 'becoming one's own self', 'actively exploring the way of being a nurse', and 'experiencing one's own achievement as a future nurse'. Consequences were 'deciding on the career on one's own' and 'career indecision on one's own'. Conclusion: The findings indicate that nursing students tried to know themselves, explore careers and experience their achievements, and that their efforts were influenced by real situations and support systems. Therefore, nurse educators should develop systems and programs to help students in nursing make career decisions.

Purpose: This study was conducted to identify the influence of clinical practicum-related stress, and awareness, and self-efficacy on strength on health promotion behaviors among nursing students. Methods: The subjects were 274 students in nursing college who had experience in a clinical nursing practicum. Data were collected from self-reported questionnaires and were analyzed by independent t-test, ANOVA, Pearson correlation coefficient, and multiple regression analyses. Results: Multiple regression analyses showed that strength self-efficacy and self-awareness on strength significantly affected overall health promotion behaviors. Regarding subscales of health promotion behaviors, self-awareness on strength significantly affected health responsibility and stress management in health promotion behavior when controlling for sociodemographic characteristics, while the subscales of clinical practicum-related stress did not affect health promotion behavior. Conclusion: The recognition of an individual's strength and self-efficacy might be a factor in improving health promotion behaviors among nursing college students, although they suffer from stress during clinical nursing practicum.

Purpose: To describe nursing students' experience of sexual harassment during clinical practicum. Methods: An interpretive phenomenological qualitative approach was used to understand contextual experiences of participants. Individual in-depth interviews were conducted to collect data from thirteen nursing students who experienced sexual harassment during clinical practice in general hospitals at D metropolitan city. All interviews were recorded and transcribed into Korean and English. Transcripts were analyzed using the data analysis method described by Diekelmann, Allen, and Tanner. Results: The following 12 themes emerged from the data: 'unprepared to respond', 'lack of education', 'unsure about when behavior crosses the line', 'power differential for nursing students', 'balancing self-preservation with obligations to patients', 'shame', 'feeling responsible for not being able to prevent the harassment', 'impact on patient care', 'fear of what might have happened', 'fear of repercussions', 'long term impact', and 'peer support'. Conclusion: Participants in this study described feeling an obligation to care for their patients. However, they seemed to be unable to balance this while feeling vulnerable to sexual harassment with strong negative feelings. Helping students recognize and effectively deal with sexual harassment is a critical element to assure quality learning for participants and maintain quality of care during clinical practice.
Purpose: This study was to investigate the effects of communication styles and stress coping on college adaptation in nursing students. Methods: The data was collected by questionnaires from 180 nursing students in a university in Gyeongsan, Korea. The data were analyzed with the SPSS/Win 23.0 program, using descriptive statistics, independent t-test, and multiple logistic regression. Results: A positive correlation was found for college adaptation with a functional communication pattern such as leveling stance (r=.36, p<.001) and stress coping (r=.39, p<.001). With more using of functional communication and with higher level of active coping of stress coping, nursing students appeared to more successfully adaptation to college life. It was also found that an explanatory power for college adaptation of these factors was 29.8% (F=20.01, p<.001). Conclusion: The study results indicate that it is necessary to develop various programs that can improve effective communication and active coping of stress coping of nursing students in order to enhance the adaptation process to college life.
Purpose: The present study aimed to develop and examine the effectiveness of a pediatric nursing competency-building program for nursing students. Methods: This was a quasi-experimental study with a nonequivalent control group pretest-posttest design conducted between October and December 2021. The participants included 40 nursing students (20 each in the experimental and control groups) at a university in a South Korean city. The pediatric nursing competency-building program integrated problem-based learning and simulation into clinical field practice. The experimental group participated in the program, while the control group did not. Data were analyzed using the 𝑥2 test, the independent t-test, and repeated-measures analysis of variance. Results: Pediatric nursing competency and clinical performance showed a greater increase in the experimental group than in the control group. However, the change in problem-solving ability in the experimental group was not significantly different from that in the control group. Conclusion: The pediatric nursing competency-building program effectively improved students' pediatric nursing competency and clinical performance.

Purpose: The purpose of this study was to develop a scenario and evaluate students' performance in simulation learning of care for patients with asthma in emergency units. Methods: Meetings of experts were used to develop a scenario based on actual patients and textbook material. An evaluation protocol was developed to evaluate the simulation learning. The scenario was used in 2006 with six groups of 26 senior nursing students who participated voluntarily. Results: The scenario was developed according to the nursing process for 15 minutes of simulation learning. The nursing students were able to demonstrate their knowledge and skills. The results showed a need to improve problem solving ability. In the self-evaluation, the students reported that simulation learning helped them to integrate their knowledge to practice and recognize their weaknesses and strengths. However, the scores for self-confidence about patient care after the simulation learning were low (4.8/10). Conclusion: The scenario in this study gave the students the experience of providing qualified and secure nursing care under conditions similar to reality. Further development of a variety of scenarios for simulation learning is needed.
Background: Communication training in nursing college students is an integral part of the development of their competency in dealing with patients. However, the traditional lecture style of training delivery may not be desirably effective. Purpose: This study investigated the effects of a communication training program utilizing a small group dynamic on the communication competency and human relationships in nursing college students. Methods: One hundred twenty six freshmen in a university in Seoul participated in this study. The instruments of communication competency (Primary Communication Inventory) and human relationships (Relationship Change Scale) were used at the beginning and conclusion of the training period. Eighty-three students from two nursing classes were assigned to the experimental groups and 43 students from other classes were assigned to the control groups. Each of the 11 small groups was composed of 7 or 8 students. The weekly program that ran during the 2007 fall semester from October 1st to December 11th consisted of effective communication strategies including therapeutic communication skills, Johari's window, empathy, active listening, and transactional analysis. Results: The experimental group of students reported significantly greater improvement in communication competencies, specific nonverbal competencies, and human relationships compared with the control group. Specifically, the experimental students demonstrated greater improvement in nonverbal communication competencies and satisfaction, communication, and awareness of human relationships. Conclusions: Small group based communication training can be an effective alternative method of communication education for college nursing students.
Purpose: The purpose of this study was to investigate factors affecting resilience in nursing students. Methods: A survey was conducted with 200 nursing students at a college and a university in P city and K city. Data were collected from March 1 to 20, 2017, and analyzed with SPSS PASW 22.0. Results: In the hierarchical analysis, factors affecting resilience were emotional intelligence (${\beta}=.39$, p<.001), psychological well-being (${\beta}=.31$, p<.001), and self-esteem (${\beta}=.16$, p=.010). The variable that had the highest impact was emotional intelligence and the explanation power of the regression model was 65%(F=34.40 p<.001). Conclusion: The findings of this study indicate that emotional intelligence, psychological well-being, and self-esteem are essential for resilience in nursing students. Thus, enhancing emotional intelligence and psychological well-being would be an effective strategy to improve resilience in nursing students.
