Smoke flavors based on the thermal decomposition of wood have been applied to a variety of food products as an alternative for traditional smoking. Despite its increasing use, the available genotoxicity data on wood smoke flavors (WSF) are still controversial. Thus, potential genotoxic effects of WSF in four short-term in vitro genotoxicity assays were investigated, which included the Ames assay, chromosomal aberration assay, micronucleus test and the alkaline comet assay. WSF did not cause any mutation in the Ames assay using five tester strains at six concentrations of 0.16, 0.31, 0.63, 1.25, 2.5 and 5 ${\mu}l/plate$. To assess clastogenic effect, the in vitro chromosomal aberration assay was performed using Chinese hamster lung cells. No statistically significant increase in the number of metaphases with structural aberrations was observed at the concentrations of 1.25, 2.5, and 5 ${\mu}l/ml$. The in vitro comet assay and micronucleus test results obtained on L5178Y cells also revealed that WSF has no genotoxicity potential, although there was a marginal increase in micronuclei frequencies and DNA damage in the respective micronucleus and comet assays. Taken together, based on the results obtained from these four in vitro studies, it is concluded that WSF is not a mutagenic agent in bacterial cells and causes no chromosomal and DNA damage in mammalian cells in vitro.

The catalytic thermal oxidizer process has recently attracted considerable attention for the oxidation and decomposition of volatile organic compounds at low temperatures (< 450 ℃) with high efficiency (> 95%). Although many noble metal catalytic materials are well established, they are expensive and hazardous. Herein, highly active and low-cost Cu-Mn bimetallic catalysts were prepared using a simple and facile synthesis method involving the co-precipitation of Cu and Mn precursors. The synthesis of the catalyst was optimized by controlling the composition ratio of Cu and Mn. The optimized catalyst exhibited a large surface area of 230.8 m2/g with a mesoporous structure. To demonstrate the catalytic performance, the Cu-Mn catalyst was tested for the oxidation reaction of ethyl acetate, showing a high conversion efficiency of 100% at a low temperature of 250 ℃.
As the use of lithium-ion secondary batteries is rapidly increasing due to the rapid growth of the electric vehicle market, the disposal and recycling of spent batteries after use has been raised as a serious problem. Since stored energy must be removed in order to recycle the spent batteries, an effective discharging process is required. In this study, graphite and NCM622 were used as active materials to manufacture coin-type half cells and full cells, and the electrochemical behavior occurring during overdischarge was analyzed. When the positive and negative electrodes are overdischarged respectively using a half-cell, a conversion reaction in which transition metal oxide is reduced to metal occurs first in the positive electrode, and a side reaction in which Cu, the current collector, is corroded following decomposition of the SEI film occurs in the negative electrode. In addition, a side reaction during overdischarge is difficult to occur because a large polarization at the initial stage is required. When the full cell is overdischarged, the cell reaches 0 V and the overdischarge ends with almost no side reaction due to this large polarization. However, if the full cell whose capacity is degraded due to the cycle is overdischarged, corrosion of the Cu current collector occurs in the negative electrode. Therefore, cycled cell requires an appropriate treatment process because its electrochemical behavior during overdischarge is different from that of a fresh cell.
The compounding resin for biodegradable wrap was developed, and its manufacturing process and physical properties were studied. For these purposes, following factors were optimized: the types and amounts of raw resin material, anti-oxidants, and lubricants used. In this work, the stable compounding resin used to make biodegradable wrap was based on poly(butylene adipate-co-butylenesuccinate) (PBAS) and poly(butyleneadipate-co-butylene succinate-co-butyleneterephthalate) (PBAST). The improved properties of resin with an additive were investigated by melting flow index (MFI). From these results, the physical properties of compounding resin, based on PBAST, were more than those of PBAS. For PBAS, the Irganox 1010, 1076 and Irgafos TNPP as the first and second anti-oxidants, respectively, were good. For PBAST, the good first and second anti-oxidants, respectively, were Irganox 1076 and Mark PEP 36. The good lubricants for feeding PBAS and PBAST were glycerol monostearate and palmityl alcohol, respectively. The stability and tensile strength experiment of wrap were also investigated by the elution of heavy metals and universal testing machine (UTM), respectively. The decomposition ratio of developed wrap was increased proportional to the reclaiming time. The degradation ratio of compounding resin sample was about 60% after 40 days.
Quantification of the ecosystem respiration is essential in understanding the carbon cycling of natural and disturbed landscapes. Soil respiration and some environmental factors which affect soil respiration were investigated in a Larix leptolepis plantation inKongju, Korea. Soil respiration was measured at midday of the $15^{th}$ and $30^{th}$ day of every month from May to December in a non-cutting area (Control) and a cutting area (Treatment) with IRGA Soil Respiration Analyzer. Throughout the study period, average soil temperature and water content were $23.3{\pm}0.5^{\circ}C$ and $27.76{\pm}7.12%$ for control, and $25.9{\pm}3.1^{\circ}C$ and $24.55{\pm}5.12%$ for treatment, respectively. There was a positive correlation ($R^2$=0.8905) between soil respiration and soil temperature in the study area. However, there was no significant correlation between soil respiration and soil moisture ($R^2$=0.4437). The seasonal soil respiration increased in the summer and decreased in the winter. In August, maximum soil respirations in the control and treatment areas were $0.82{\pm}0.13$ and $1.32{\pm}0.10$$gCO_2{\cdot}^{-2}{\cdot}r^{-1}$, respectively. Total amounts of $CO_2$ evolution in the control and treatment areas from May to December in 2008 were 2,419.2 and 3,610.8 $CO_2g{\cdot}m^{-2}$, respectively. The amount of soil respiration in the treatment area was 49.3% greater than in the control. Increased soil respiration in the treatment area may be due to increased soil temperature, which drives increased microbial decomposition. According to our present investigation, forest cutting will increase the atmospheric $CO_2$ by increasing soil respiration.

In this study, we have prepared pure planar-type ZnO and calamine powder containing both ZnO and Fe2O3 components as a raw material for cosmetics with UV and blue band blocking functions. The planar-type ZnO ceramic powder having a high aspect ratio in the range of 20:1 to 50:1 was synthesized by precipitation method in a zinc acetate and sodium citrate mixed solution with the electrolyte obtained by power generation with a zinc-air battery. The content of Fe2O3 in the artificial calamine ceramic powder could be increased by increasing the amount of iron chloride solution added, and in this case, some of the blue region of visible light and ultraviolet light were remarkably absorbed. When potassium acetate was added, the decomposition of the Zn(OH)42- anion in the solution was promoted to facilitate the growth of ZnO crystal in the form of a barrier wall in the vertical direction on the (0001) plane, which could increase UV absorption by providing more opportunities. By controlling the amount of iron chloride solution and potassium acetate solution added, the composition and shape of the thin film plate-shaped artificial calamine ceramic powder can be optimized, and when applied to cosmetic formulations, the light transmittance of the blue region can be greatly reduced.

Dispersion characteristics and envirounmental impactes of the stream sediments were investigated and geochemical disaster in the Namhae-Hwagye area was predicted. Stream sediments having no possibility of contamination effect and representing drainage basins were collected. Major and hazardous elements concentrations were determined by XRF, ICP-AES and NAA analysis methods. Acid decomposition for the ICP-AES have been used $HClO_4$ and HF with $200^{\circ}C$ heating at 1'st and after that $HClO_4$, HF and HCl with $200^{\circ}C$ heating at 2'nd stage. Hazardous elements concentrations for the stream sediments in the Namhae area were Cu $5.66{\sim}168\;ppm$, Pb $18.0{\sim}40.7\;ppm$, Cr $21.6{\sim}147\;ppm$, Co $4.86{\sim}25.3\;ppm$. Hazardous elements concentrations for the stream sediments in the Hwagye area were Cu $16.4{\sim}41.2\;ppm$, Pb $26.5{\sim}37.5\;ppm$ Cr $79.6{\sim}153\;ppm$, Co $15.7{\sim}29.5\;ppm$. Concentration of Cu and Co in the stream sediments show a negative correlation with $SiO_2$ in all study area. According to E.I.(Enrichment Index) of stream sediments was not enriched in study area. And average E.I. was 0.35 (Namhae) and 0.56 (Hwagye) respectively. The stream sediments were enriched as in order of Pb > Cr > Co > Cu. And the average of Enrichment Factor (E.F.) was 0.46 to 2.84, respectively. E.F. concentration of Cu and Co were nearly similar enrichment characteristic but E.F. concentration of Cr were higher enrichnent characteristic in Namhae than Hwagye area. Pb was highly enriched in all study area but the tolerable level that used to investigate the enrichment degree of hazardous elements, was not exposed to harmful hazardous elements.
$H_2/O_2$ 비에 따른 Hybrid HVOF 용사된 $Cr_3C_2$-7wt%(NiCr) 용사층의 특성 및 산화거동 This study was performed to investigate the influence of fuel/oxygen ratio (F/O=3.2, 3.0, 2.8) on the characteristics and the oxidation behavior of the hybrid-HVOF sprayed $Cr_3C_2$-7wt%NiCr coatings. Decomposition and the oxidation of the $Cr_3C_2$was occured during spraying. The degree of transformation from $Cr_3C_2$to $Cr_7C_3$ was increased with decreasing the F/O ratio. The microstructural differences of the as sprayed coating with F/O ratio can not be distinguished, However, large pores were diminished and then the coatings became dense by heat treatment. Microhardness of the as-sprayed specimen which sprayed with F/O=3.0 condition was hightest ($Hv_{300}$=1140) and the hardness was increased to 1500 after heat treatment at $600^{\circ}C$ for 50hrs in air. It was supposed that hardness was increased due to the formation of $Cr_2O_3$ within $Cr_3C_2$/$Cr_7C_3$matrix and the densification of coating layer during heat treatment. Apparent activation energy for oxidation was varied from 21.2 kcal$mol^{-1}K^{-1}$ to 23.8 kcal$mol^{-1}K^{-1}$ with respect to the F/O ratio. The surface morphology was changed to porous and oxide chusters were grown after oxidation $1000^{\circ}C$ for 50 hours by the aggressive evolution of gas phase ($CrO_3$ and$CO_2$). The oxide cluster was composed of Ni and Cr.
A commercial cyclic diphosphonate ester (TPMP) and melamine (MA) was combined and added to polyamide 6 (PA6) to prepare the fire retardant PA6. An increase of the oxygen index to 28.6 as well as an improvement of the UL-94 classification to V-0 rating was observed. Cone measurements explained the rate of heat release (RHR) decreased and TGA showed the early decomposition and high solid residue due to co-addition of TPMP and MA, suggesting the occurrence of synergistic effect of TPMP and MA on fire resistance of PA6. The morphology of the char developed during combust ion showed the appearance of thick, intumescent cells on the surface of retardant PA6, which protects the underlying material from the action of the heat flux or flame and limits the diffusion of combustible volatile products towards the flame and oxygen.

Road construction is becoming increasingly important in marine and desert areas due to population growth and economic development. However, the load carrying capacity of pavement is of gear concern to design and geotechnical engineers because of the poor engineering properties of the soils in these areas. Therefore, stabilization of the soils is regarded as an important issue. Besides, due to the fuels combustion and carbonate decomposition, cement industry generates around 5% of global $CO_2$ emission. Thus, using bentonite as a natural pozzolan in soil stabilization is more eco-friendly than using cement. The aim of this research is to experimentally study of the stabilized marine and desert sands using deep mixing method by ordinary Portland cement and sodium bentonite. Different partial percentages of cement along with different weight percentages of sodium bentonite were added to the sands. Unconfined compression test (UCS), Energy Dispersive X-ray (EDX), and Scanning Electron Microscope (SEM) were conducted on the specimens. Moreover, a mathematical model was developed for predicting the strength of the treated soils.
