Earlier studies were reviewed to make a literature analysis to find out existing planning guidelines for environments, and small-group workshop was held to formulate down-to-earth planning guidelines. And a survey was conducted on the parents of selected children to assess the importance of the selected planning guidelines. The findings of the study were as follows: First, residential environments were categorized into housing spaces and outdoor playing spaces, and 25 and 28 planning guidelines for each field were prepared respectively. When a survey was implemented, all the 53 planning guidelines were rated as important or very important. Second, the guidelines for safety were considered very important, and the importance of the planning guidelines varied with children's age. The findings of the study suggest that the development of more reinforced criteria for children's safety is required to create child-friendly residential environments.

In this study, a small group workshop panel method was used. The subjects were 4 panel groups which was consisted of households with children. Each of the panel included 2 consecutive workshops. In this study, a list of valuable criteria for design guidelines was identified. In addition, the current residential community environment was found to be inadequate to accommodate for children's lifestyles and children had different housing needs according to their ages. In conclusion, the design guidelines should be developed to provide children with developmentally appropriate community environments.

  • The purpose of the study is to analyze the planning characteristics of outdoor space in apartment complexes in terms of child-care environment. We selected 8 apartment complexes in Cheongju, within three years from construction, of small and medium-sized apartments ($60-85m^2$) where a large number of families with young children are presumed to reside in. As a result of the study, it was found that whereas the factors that can be quantified such as the floor height differences, the angles of ramps, and the number of the rest facilities are excellent, the qualitative part which cannot be easily quantified such as the location and direction of the rest facility and play materials should be improved a lot. And the following improvements were suggested; separating the pedestrian passage from the vehicle road in the main entrance of the complex, utilizing the piloti for infant caring, making the entrance area of apartment safe for pedestrians from vehicles, reallocating resting spaces, redesigning resting spaces safer to infants, building or reallocating existing booths at the stops of kindergarten buses, redesigning the square safer from vehicles with shades, making it possible for guardians to watch infants in playing field from the resting space, allocating natural environments essential for child development.

  • Purpose: The aim of this study was to identify the influence of children's and caregivers' perceptions of local neighborhood environments on children's physical activities (PAs) and screen-based activities (SBAs) among low-income families. Methods: Secondary data analysis was performed using the data of 171 low-income children attending community child care centers and of their caregivers. Descriptive analysis, factor analysis and logistic regression analysis were employed to analyze data. Results: PAs were insufficient and SBAs were excessive in the majority of children. Children and primary caregivers had moderately negative perceptions of their local neighborhood environments. However these perceptions were not found to affect children's PAs or SBAs significantly. Conclusion: Although perceptions of local neighborhoods were not found to significantly influence children's PAs or SBAs, efforts are needed to make community child care centers and neighborhoods safer and more activity-friendly.

Results: First, the most influential variable that affected father's parental stress was their marital satisfaction. The fathers felt less parental stress when they felt higher marital satisfaction. Second, fathers felt less parental stress when their occupational environments were family friendly. Conclusion/Implications: Ways to improve mariatal satisfacation and a family friendly evironment at work should be sought out in order to lessen the parental stress of fathers raising infants.
