  • The qualify of preschool education is related to the qualify of the physical environment, This research is aiming to develop and validate the set of scales for the measurement of physical quality of the interior spaces in child care facilities. The research has been in three major phases: (1)the development of indicative sub-scales for the description, measurement and evaluation of the physical designed quality of early childhood environments (2)two rounds of iterative phases of reliability and validity testing of the scales through expert panels and observational field-testing and (3)implications for future research to be done. 13 sub-scales were developed, which are based on Moore's 15 design principal for child care environments. And each sub-scale includes several evaluation items based upon developmental theory, existing empirical literature, and Korean, Australian and American child care standards. This set of scales will (1)aid research on the effects of environmental variables on quality of child care facilities for infants, toddlers, and preschoolers; (2)permit evaluation of such environments to identify areas of needed improvement; and (3)provide information for policy makers, parents, administrators, and designers/architects.

  • This study aims to investigate and analyze how toddlers' characteristics and child care center's environments including facilities and care-givers' characteristics affect toddlers' behavior in child care center using observational methods. Total 40 toddlers in same numbers of boys and girls participated in this study. Average age of tollers were the 31.7 months ranging from 27 months to 35 months. The toddlers were observed with the observation schedule modified from observation categories of Holloway and Reichhart-Erickson(1988). Data were analysed by Pearson's correlation, t-test, one away ANOVA, Duncan Test and stepwise regression using the SPSSWIN Version. The results of the study were as follow: First, the toddlers' behaviors were related to all the toddlers' characteristics. Second, the toddlers' behaviors were related to all the characteristics of the child care facilities such as the types of facilities, the class size and the caregiver-toddler ratio. Third, the toddler' behaviors were related to caregivers' variables such as the total care experience in centers, the experience with toddler care, the martial status, the certificate types except the child rearing experience and the educational level. Fourth, the toddlers' characteristics were more significantly related to the behavior of them than those of child care centers' environment.

  • The purpose of this research is to explore the strategy of teacher and the strategy of child in teacher-child interaction according to related variables. The participants of this research are 2 classroom teachers and their 54 5-year-old kindergarten children(27 boys and 27 girls). To collect the data, child's classroom activities were observed and videotaped using event sampling 90 times(30 times per beginning, middle, and end). Repeated test, two-way ANOVA, Scheffe test used for data analysis. The results of this research were as followed; First, over time there were differences between strategies of teacher and strategies of child during teacher-child interaction. Second, in child variables there were differences in strategies of teacher and strategies of child during teacher-child interaction according to child's gender. Third, in environment variables there were differences between strategies of teacher and strategies of child according to play rules and play areas.

  • The Purpose of this study was to identify factors that influence the self-esteem of the schooler of families in poverty. A descriptive, correlational, and cross-sectional study design was used. The data were collected from February to March, 2001. Convenient sampling was done from 194 subjects living in Jeju Do, but 167 subjects among these were used for the study analysis. Hierarchical Stepwise Regression was used to identify significant factors. The results of this study were as follows: In general, self-esteem status of the schooler in poor families was relatively poor. In stepwise regression analysis, self-esteem status was significantly influenced by emotional home environment, duration of poverty and frequency of parent-child tactics. These variables explained 26.8% of the variance of schooler's self-esteem. Conclusively, it is recommended that nursing intervention programs for schooler in poor family should be a focus to enhance the economic context as well as family effect.

  • Factors considered by mothers when choosing a kindergarten for their child were analyzed by mother's age, education level, and employment status. Questionnaires (Seo, 2002; Kim, 2001; Park, 1997) targeted 636 mothers of kindergarteners from 12 different kindergartens. Results were (1) in order of importance mothers considered : physical environment, tuition, humane environment, educational curriculum and program, and time spent for education. (2) Younger mothers considered the program of the kindergarten of more importance whereas older mothers considered the commuting method, size of kindergarten, and personality and competence of the principal and teachers of more importance. (3) College educated mothers considered curriculum and field trips to be important factors. (4) Employed mothers considered the importance of all day programs and hours of operation.

  • Objective: To prevent adolescent drinking and smoking, this study proposed a strategy based on the ecological perspective. Methods: The study applied multilevel moderated logistic regression analysis on nationally representative individual-level (2,046 9th grade adolescents) and neighborhood-level (92 geographic areas) data. Results: There was a positive association between risky neighborhood environments (e.g., rate of smoking, drinking, and presence of saloon/bars accommodation) and rates of adolescent drinking and smoking. Furthermore, the interplay between risky neighborhood environments and school adjustment pointed to a possible protective effect of a high level of school adjustment in predicting smoking and drinking among adolescents. Conclusion: Findings highlighted the importance of considering multiple neighborhood social contexts surrounding adolescents to understand their risky behavior. Furthermore, positive intervention strategies that focus on adolescents' positive development within the school domain may act to protect adolescents from harmful neighborhood environments.

  • Purpose: The purpose of this integrative review was to synthesize previous research on perceptions of school health care among school-aged children and adolescents with chronic diseases. Methods: This study was performed in accordance with Whittemore and Knafl's stages of an integrative review (problem identification, literature search, data evaluation, data analysis, and presentation of the results). Four databases (PubMed, CINAHL, Embase, and Web of Science) were used to retrieve relevant articles. Results: Eighteen articles were included in this review. We identified five thematic categories: peer-related issues, a safe school environment, self-perception of an existing disease, self-management, and a supportive school environment. Conclusion: It is necessary to establish a school health care system with a supportive environment for children and adolescents with chronic diseases.

  • The purpose of this study was to investigate the relationships between mothers' parenting efficacy and parenting behaviors, home environment, and preschool children's learning behaviors. The participants consisted of 244 preschool children and their mothers in Seoul and GyeongGi-Do. The children's teachers rated the learning behaviors of each child whose mother returned our questionnaire. The collected data were subjected to general descriptive statistical analysis, t-test, one-way ANOVA, and Pearson's productive correlation. Results showed that learning behaviors of preschool children were affected by their sex, age, and mother's education. In addition, there were negative relationships between mothers' parenting efficacy, parenting behaviors, and learning behaviors of preschool children.
