A successful combination of “oxygen-assisted chemical vapor deposition (CVD) process” and Co catalyst nanoparticles to grow highly pure single walled carbon nanotubes (SWNTs) was demonstrated. Recently, it was reported that addition of small amounts of oxygen during CVD process dramatically increased the purity and yield of carbon nanotubes. However, this strategy could not be applied for discrete Fe nanoparticle catalysts from which appropriate yields of SWNTs could be grown directly on solid substrates, and fabricated into field effect transistors (FETs) quite efficiently. The main reason for this failure is due to the carbothermal reduction which results in SiO2 nanotrench formation. We found that the oxygen-assisted CVD process could be successfully applied for the growth of highly pure SWNTs by switching the catalyst from Fe to Co nanoparticles. The topological morphologies and p-type transistor electrical transport properties of the grown SWNTs were examined by using atomic force microscope (AFM), Raman, and from FET devices fabricated by photolithography.

In last few decades, although thermal and/or solutal buoyancy-driven recirculating flows in a closed ampoule have been intensively studies as a model problem, there exist interesting total molar flux of Hg2Br2 that have been unreported in the literature. It is concluded that the total molar flux of Hg2Br2(A) increases linearly and directly as the temperature difference regions in the range of 10℃ ≤ ΔT ≤ 50°, 3.5 × 103 ≤ Grt ≤ 4.08 × 103, 4.94 × 104 ≤ Grs ≤ 6.87 × 104. For the range of 10 Torr ≤ PB ≤ 150 Torr, the total molar flux of Hg2Br2(A) decays second order exponentially as the partial pressure of component B (argon as an impurity), PB increases. From the view point of energy transport, the fewer the partial pressure of component B (argon), PB is, the more the energy transport is achieved.
The convective flow structures in the vapor phase on earth are shown to be single unicellular, indicating the solutally dominant convection is important. These findings reflect that the total molar fluxes show asymmetrical patterns in a viewpoint of interfacial distributions. With decreasing the gravitational level form $1g_0$ down to $1.0{\times}10^{-4}g_0$, the total molar fluxes decay first order exponentially. It is also found that the total molar fluxes decay first order exponentially with increasing the partial pressure of component B, PB (Torr) form 5 Torr up to 400 Torr. Under microgravity environments less than $1g_0$, a diffusive-convection mode is dominant and, results in much uniformity in front of the crystal regions in comparisons with a normal gravity acceleration of $1g_0$.

In this research a time dependent thermal and solutal convection was computationally investigated for the physical vapor transport of the mixture of $Hg_2Cl_2-I_2$ system with for the convective regime from thermal Rayleigh number of $2.16{\times}10^6$ up to $1.7{\times}10^7$ with marching time to a steady state problem. With time marching, the convective cells are decreased for the thermal Rayleigh number of $2.16{\times}10^6$, and increased for the thermal Rayleigh number of $1.7{\times}10^7$. The convective flow structures are found to be essentially time independent on the horizontal orientation of the enclosure with respect to the gravity vector, and on the other hand, time dependent on the vertical orientation of the enclosure with respect to the gravity vector.

Natural convection of a two dimensional laminar steady-state incompressible fluid flow in a rectangular enclosure has been investigated numerically for low aspect ratios with the physical vapor transport crystal growth. Results show that for aspect ratio (Ar = L/H) range of $0.1{\leq}Ar{\leq}1.5$, with the increase in Grashof number by one order of magnitude, the total mass flux is much augmented, and is exponentially decayed with the aspect ratio. Velocity and temperature profiles are presented at the mid-width of the rectangular enclosure. It is found that the effect of Grashof number on mass transfer is less significant when the enclosure is shallow (Ar = 0.1) and the influence of aspect ratio is stranger when the enclosure is tall and the Grashof number is high. Therefore, the convective phenomena are greatly affected by the variation of aspect ratios.
This paper deals with the separation of MTBE-methanol mixtures using crosslinked Poly(vinyl alcohol)(PVA) membranes with sulfur-succinic acid(SSA) as a crosslinking agent by pervaporation and vapor permeation technique. The operating temperatures, methanol concentration in feed mixtures, and SSA concentrations in PVA membranes were varied to investigate the separation performance of PVA/SSA membranes and the optimum separation characteristics by pervaporation and vapor permeation. And also, for PVA/SSA membranes, the swelling measurements were carried out to study the transport phenomena. The swelling measurements were carried out for pure MTBE and methanol, and MTBE/methanol=90/10, 80/20 mixtures using PVA/SSA membranes with varying SSA compositions. There are two factors of the membrane network and the hydrogen bonding. In pervaporation separation was also carried out for MTBE/methanol=90/10, 80/20 mixtures at various temperatures. The sulfuric acid group in SSA took an important role in the membrane performance. The crosslinking effect might be over the hydrogen bonding effect due to the sulfuric acid group at 3 and 5% SSA membranes, and this two factors act vice versa on 7% SSA membrane. In this case, the 5% SSA membrane shows the highest separation factor of 2,095 with the flux of 12.79g/㎡$.$hr for MTBE/methanol=80/20 mixtures at 30$^{\circ}C$ which this mixtures show near the azeotopic composition. Compared to pervaporation, vapor permeation showed less flux and similar separation factor. In this case, the flux decreased significantly because of compact structure and the effect of hydrogen bonding. In vapor permeation, density or concentration of methanol in vaporous feed is lower than that of methanol in liquid feed, as a result, the hydrogen bonding portion between the solvent and the hydroxyl group in PVA is reduced in vapor permeation. In this case, the 7% SSA membranes shows the highest separation factor of 2,187 with the flux of 4.84g/㎡$.$hr for MTBE/methanol=80/20 mixtures at 30$^{\circ}C$.
Polycrystalline silicon carbide (SiC) thick films were depostied by low pressure chemical vapor deposition (LPCVD) using CH3SiCl3 (MTS) and H2 gaseous mixture onto isotropic graphite substrate. Effects of deposition variables on the SiC film were investigated. Deposition rate had been found to be surface-reaction controlled below reactor temperature of 120$0^{\circ}C$ and mass-transport controlled over 125$0^{\circ}C$. Apparent activation energy value decreased below 120$0^{\circ}C$ and deposition rate decreased above 125$0^{\circ}C$ by depletion effect of the reactant gas in the direction of flow in a horizontal hot wall reactor. Microstructure of the as-deposited SiC films was strongly influenced by deposition temperature and position. Microstructural change occurred greater in the mass transport controlled region than surface reaction controlled region. The as-deposited SiC layers in this experiment showed stoichiometric composition and there were no polytype except for $\beta$-SiC. The preferred orientation plane of the polycrystalline SiC layers was (220) plane at a high reactant gas concentration in the mass transfer controlled region. As depletion effect of reactant concentration was increased, SiC films preferentially grow as (111) plane.

The effect of Cu on the hydrogen reduction of $MoO_3$ powders was investigated by measuring the humidity change during a non-isothermal process of hydrogen reduction. The presence of Cu induced a shift in the reduction temperature and strongly affected the reduction processes of $MoO_3\rightarrowMo_4O_{11}\rightarrowMoO_2$, which comprised the contained chemical vapor transport of $MoO_x(OH)_2$. This study suggests that the surface of the Cu grains acts as a nucleation site for the reduction of $MoO_x(OH)_2$ to $MoO_2$ particles from $MoO_3$ or $Mo_4O_{11}$. Such an activated reduction process results in the deposition of Mo and $MoO_2$ particles on the surface of the Cu.
In this study, impurity effects on diffusive-convection flow fields by physical vapor transport under terrestrial and microgravity conditions were numerically analyzed for the mixture of $Hg_2Cl_2-I_2$ system. The numerical analysis provides the essence of diffusive-convection flow as well as heat and mass transfer in the vapor phase during the physical vapor transport through velocity vector flow fields, streamlines, temperature, and concentration profiles. The total molar fluxes at the crystal regions were found to be much more sensitive to both the gravitational acceleration and the partial pressure of component $I_2$ as an impurity. Our results showed that the solutal effect tended to stabilize the diffusive-convection flow with increasing the partial pressure of component $I_2$. Under microgravity conditions below $10^{-3}g_0$, the flow fields showed a one-dimensional parabolic flow structure indicating a diffusion-dominant mode. In other words, at the gravitational levels less than $10^{-3}g_0$, the effects of convection would be negligible.
