Linearity improvement of UltraScale+ FPGA-based time-to-digital converter

  • Time-to-digital converters (TDCs) based on the tapped delay line (TDL) architecture have been widely used in various applications requiring a precise time measurement. However, the poor uniformity of the propagation delays in the TDL implemented on FPGA leads to bubble error and large nonlinearity of the TDC. The purpose of this study was to develop an advanced TDC architecture capable of minimizing the bubble errors and improving the linearity. To remove the bubble errors, the decimated delay line (DDL) architecture was implemented on the UltraScale + FPGA; meanwhile, to improve the linearity of the TDC, a histogram uniformization (HU) and multi-chain TDL (MCT) methods were developed and implemented on the FPGA. The integral nonlinearities (INLs) and differential nonlinearities (DNLs) of the plain TDCs with the 'HU method' (HU TDC) and with 'both HU and MCT methods' (HU-MCT TDC) were measured and compared to those of the TDC with 'DDL alone' (plain TDC). The linearity of HU-MCT TDC were superior to those of the plain TDC and HU TDC. The experiment results indicated that HU-MCT TDC developed in this study was useful for improving the linearity of the TDC, which allowed for high timing resolution to be achieved.

Effects of the Nitrile Group Substitution on the Gas Separation Properties of Aromatic Polyamide Membranes

  • The effects of nitrile group substitution onto aromatic polyamide backbone on the gas permeability and permselectivity of the polymers are examined. The gas permeability of aromatic polyamides increase with increasing the content of nitrile group substitution, whereas the permselectivity decreases with increasing the nitrile group contents. The effects of chain linrearity on the permeability and permselectivity are also examined. The non-linearity of the polymers increases the permeability. These behaviors are interpreted in terms of chain packing and crystallinity of the aromatic polyamides.

A numerical analysis on the extinction of hydrogen-oxygen diffusion flames at high pressure (고압하에서 수소-산소 확산화염의 소염 특성에 관한 수치 해석)

  • Extinction characteristics of pure hydrogen-oxygen diffusion flames, at high pressures in the neighborhood of the critical pressure of oxygen, is numerically studied by employing counterflow diffusion flame as a model flame let in turbulent flames in rocket engines. The numerical results show that extinction strain rate increases almost linearly with pressure up to 100 atm, which can be explained by comparison of the chain-branching-reaction rate with the recombination-reaction rate. Since contributions of the chain-branching reactions, two-body reactions, are found to be much greater than those of the recombination reactions, three-body reactions, extinction is controlled by two-body reactions, thereby resulting in the linearity of extinction strain rate to pressure. Therefore, it is found that the chemical kinetic behaviors don't change up to 100 atm. Consideration of the pressure fall-off reactions shows a slight increase in extinction strain rate, but does not modify its linearity to pressure. The reduced kinetic mechanisms, which were verified at low pressures, are found to be still valid at high pressures and show good qualitative agreement in prediction of extinction strain rates. Effect of real gas is negligible on chemical kinetic behaviors of the flames.

  • In this paper, we deal with a characterization of the posets with the property that every poset isometry of $\mathbb{F}^n_q$ fixing the origin is a linear map. We say such a poset to be admitting the linearity of isometries. We show that a poset P admits the linearity of isometries over $\mathbb{F}^n_q$ if and only if P is a disjoint sum of chains of cardinality 2 or 1 when q = 2, or P is an anti-chain otherwise.

  • Chan and Qi (SCM 8/3 (2003) 209) developed an innovative measurement method that aggregates performance measures in a supply chain into an overall performance index. The method is useful and makes a significant contribution to supply chain management. Nevertheless, it can be cumbersome in computation due to its highly complex algorithmic fuzzy model. In aggregating the performance information, weights used by Chan and Qi-which aim to address the imprecision of human judgments-are incompatible with weights in additive models. Furthermore, the default assumption of linearity of its scoring procedure could lead to an inaccurate assessment of the overall performance. This paper addresses these limitations by developing an alternative measurement that takes care of the above. This research integrates three different approaches to multiple criteria decision analysis (MCDA)-the multiattribute value theory (MAVT), the swing weighting method and the eigenvector procedure-to develop a comprehensive assessment of supply chain performance. One case study is presented to demonstrate the measurement of the proposed method. The performance model used in the case study relies on the Supply Chain Operations Reference (SCOR) model level 1. With this measurement method, supply chain managers can easily benchmark the performance of the whole system, and then analyze the effectiveness and efficiency of the supply chain.

  • The notion of linearity is fundamental in science and engineering. Much of system and control theory is based on the analysis of linear system, which does not care whether it is nonlinear and complex. The dynamic programming is one of concerned technology when users are interested in choosing best choice from system operation for nonlinear or dynamic system‘s performance and control problem. In this paper, we will introduce the dynamic programming which is based on discrete system. When the discrete system is constructed with discrete state, transfer between states, and the event to induct transfer, the discrete system can describe the system operation as dynamic situation or symbolically at the logical point of view. We will introduce technologies which are related with controllable of Controlled Markov Chain as shown example of simple game. The dynamic programming will be able to apply to optimal control part which has adaptable performance in the discrete system.

Development of the Droplet Digital PCR Method for the Detection and Quantification of Erwinia pyrifoliae

  • Black shoot blight disease caused by Erwinia pyrifoliae has serious impacts on quality and yield in pear production in Korea; therefore, rapid and accurate methods for its detection are needed. However, traditional detection methods require a great deal of time and fail to achieve absolute quantification. In the present study, we developed a droplet digital polymerase chain reaction (ddPCR) method for the detection and absolute quantification of E. pyrifoliae using a pair of species-specific primers. The detection range was 103-107 copies/ml (DNA templates) and cfu/ml (cell culture templates). This new method exhibited good linearity and repeatability and was validated by absolute quantification of E. pyrifoliae DNA copies from samples of artificially inoculated immature pear fruits. Here, we present the first study of ddPCR assay for the detection and quantification of E. pyrifoliae. This method has potential applications in epidemiology and for the early prediction of black shoot blight outbreaks.

Electrochemical Behaviors and Square Wave Voltammetric Determinations of Cefotaxime Sodium and Ceftriaxone Sodium (세포탁심나트륨과 세프트리악손나트륨의 전기화학 거동 및 네모파 전압전류법 정량)

  • Square wave voltammetric (SWV) and cyclic voltammetric (CV) behaviors of cefotaxime sodium and ceftriaxone sodium have been investigated in the potential range between -0.10 V and -1.30 V using the phosphate buffers of various pH values ($2.00{\sim}9.10$). Two main peaks observed were irreversible and protons were involved in their electrochemical reductions. The first peaks of these cephalosporin antibiotics are due to the reduction of the azomethine double bond in the methoxyimino group of the side chain at position 7. The second peaks of cefotaxime sodium and ceftriaxone sodium are related to the reductions of the ${\Delta}^3$ double bond and the dioxo moiety of the side chain at position 3, respectively. The calibration curve of cefotaxime sodium in the concentration range between $1.0{\times}10^{-7}M$ and $1.0{\times}10^{-5}M$ yielded the linearity with the correlation coefficient of 0.9998 when the first peak of the antibiotic in a phosphate buffer of pH 3.02 was measured at the conditions of frequency of 120 Hz and pulse height of 50 mV by SWV. The present fast, simple and accurate SWV assay method was applied to determine cefotaxime sodium in the commercial antibiotic powder of injection.

Bayesian Filter-Based Mobile Tracking under Realistic Network Setting (실제 네트워크를 고려한 베이지안 필터 기반 이동단말 위치 추적)

  • The range-free localization using connectivity information has problems of mobile tracking. This paper proposes two Bayesian filter-based mobile tracking algorithms considering a propagation scenario. Kalman and Markov Chain Monte Carlo (MCMC) particle filters are applied according to linearity of two measurement models. Measurement models of the Kalman and MCMC particle filter-based algorithms respectively are defined as connectivity between mobiles, information fusion of connectivity information and received signal strength (RSS) from neighbors within one-hop. To perform the accurate simulation, we consider a real indoor map of shopping mall and degree of radio irregularity (DOI) model. According to obstacles between mobiles, we assume two types of DOIs. We show the superiority of the proposed algorithm over existing range-free algorithms through MATLAB simulations.

Time-to-Digital Converter Implemented in Field-Programmable Gate Array using a Multiphase Clock and Double State Measurements (Field Programmable Gate Array 기반 다중 클럭과 이중 상태 측정을 이용한 시간-디지털 변환기)

  • In a delay line type of a time-to-digital converter implemented in Field Programmable Gate Array, the timing accuracy decreases for a longer carry chain. In this paper, we propose a structure that has a multi-phase clock and a state machine to check metastability; this would reduce the required length of the carry chain with the same time resolution. To reduce the errors caused by the time difference in the four delay lines associated with a four-phase clock, the proposed TDC generates a single input pulse from four phase clocks and uses a single delay line. Moreover, the state machine is designed to find the phase clock that is used to generate the single input pulse and determine the metastable state without a synchronizer. With the measurement range of 1 ms, the measured resolution was 22 ps, and the non-linearity was 25 ps.
