  • Effect of elastic modulus mismatch on the contact crack initiation is investigated to find major parameters in designing desirable surface-coated system. Silicon nitride coated soft materials with various elastic modulus mismatch, E$\_$c//E$\_$s/=1.06∼356 are prepared for the analysis. Hertzian contact test is conducted for producing contact cracks and the acoustic emission detecting technique for measuring the critical load of crack initiation. The implication is that coating thickness and material strength are controllable parameters to prevent the initiation of contact cracks resulted from the elastic modulus mismatch in the hard ceramic coating layer on the soft materials.

  • In this study, the sintering mechanism of woodceramics (WCs) from cashew nut shell waste (CNSW) was studied by analyzing chemical reactions and structural changes during the sintering process of of CNSW powder, liquefied wood and green bodies of WCs at $900^{\circ}C$ for 60 minutes in the $CO_2$ atmosphere. The chemical and structural properties of the products were investigated by X-ray diffraction (XRD), Raman spectroscopy, Fourier Transform Infrared (FTIR), and scanning electron microscope (SEM). The results showed that the decomposition reactions of liquefied wood and CNSW occurred simultaneously to form the hard carbon and the soft carbon at high temperature. The sintering mechanism of WCs has been presented.

  • Transparent organic-inorganic hybrid hard coating films were prepared by the addition of $SiO_2$ or $ZrO_2$, as an inorganic filler to improve the hardness property, filler was highly dispersed in the acrylic resin. To improve the compatibility in the acrylic resin, $SiO_2$ or $ZrO_2$ is surface-modified using various silanes with variation of the modification time and silane content. Depending on the content and kind of the modified inorganic oxide, transparent modified inorganic sols were formulated in acryl resin. Then, the sols were bar coated and cured on PET films to investigate the optical and mechanical properties. The optimized film, which has a modified $ZrO_2$ content of 4 wt% markedly improved in terms of the hardness, haze, and transparency as compared to neat acrylate resin and acrylate resin containing modified $SiO_2$ content of 8 wt%. Meanwhile, the low transparency and high haze of these films slowly appeared at $SiO_2$ content above 10 wt% and $ZrO_2$ content of 5 wt%, but the hardness values were maintained at 2H and 3H, respectively, in comparison with the HB of neat acrylate resin.

  • The constituent phases in Ti($C_{0.7}N_{0.3}$)-xWC-20Ni (wt%, x=5, 15, 25) cermets were characterized using nanoindentation in conjunction with observation of microstructure. The microstructure of cermet is composed of hard phase and binder phase, which gave rise to a wide range of hardness distribution when nanoindentation was carried out on the polished surface of cermets. Because of the inhomogeneous nature of cermet microstructure, observation of indented surface was indispensable in order to separate the hardness of each constituent phase. The measured values of hardness using nanoindentation were ${\sim}14\;GPa$ for the binder phase and ${\sim}24$ to 28 GPa for the hard phase, of which nanoindentation hardness was decreased with the addition of WC into Ti($C_{0.7}N_{0.3}$)-Ni system. In addition, the nanoindentation hardness of Ni binder phase was much higher than reported Vickers hardness, which could result from confined deformation of binder phase due to the surrounding hard phase particles.

  • The barrier rib on plasma display panel (PDP) is a typical 3D-patterned thick film with thickness of 120 ㎛ and it is hard to measure its dielectric constant in this state of the product. Because the porosity of ceramic thick film influenced the mechanical and dielectric characteristics, it was expected that there was the relationship between two properties. Therefore, the correlation analysis between porosity, hardness and dielectric constant of the barrier rib was studied and the exponential curve between porosity and hardness, and the quadratic curve between porosity and dielectric constant were drawn. The dielectric constant was well related to hardness by K400kHz = 0.5672 + 5.695 ln(Hv). The hardness was measured at five points on two real panels which sintered by two types of profiles and then dielectric constants and deviation were estimated by the above equation.

  • Ceramic materials are classified by oxide, nitride and carbide material and have high brittleness, strength and hardness. Ceramic materials are strong in compression but weak in shearing and tension. This review paper has focused on technology trends and mechanism analysis of ceramics removal machining. The ceramic materials have superior mechanical, physical and chemical properties, but it is very hard to machining and the use of ceramics has been limited because of high strength and brittleness. In this paper, technology trends of ceramic removal-machining was introduced for types of machining technology, abrasive machining, cutting process, laser machining and so on.

  • Recently, ELID (electrolytic in-process dressing) grinding technique is developed. It is possible to make a efficient precision machining of hard materials such as ceramic hard metals, and quenched steels. This paper deals with some typical applications of ELID-grinding for cylindrcal machining. The significant advantages, performance and characteristics on mirror surface grinding for external surface are described.

  • To fabricate a (100) silicon hard master, we used anisotropic wet etching for the embossing. The etching chemical for the silicon wafer was a TMAH 25$\%$ solution. The anisotropic wet etching produces a smooth sidewall surface inclined at 54.7°, and the surface roughness of the fabricated master is about 1 nm. After spin coating an organic-inorganic sol-gel hybrid resin on a silicon substrate, we used the fabricated master to form patterns on the silicon substrate. Thus, we successfully obtained patterns via the hot embossing technique with the (100) silicon hard master. Moreover, by using a single hydrophobic surface treatment of the master, we succeeded in achieving uniform surface roughness of the embossed patterns for more than ten embossments.

  • Expensive PCBN or ceramic cutting tools are used for processing of difficult-to-cut materials such as Ti and Ni alloy materials. These tools have the problem of breaking easily due to their high hardness but low fracture toughness. To solve these problems, cutting tools that form various coating layers are used in low-cost WC-Co hard material tools, and research on various tool materials is being conducted. In this study, binderless-WC, WC-6 wt%Co, WC-6 wt%Co-1 wt% Mo2C, and WC-6 wt%Co-2.5 wt% Mo2C hard materials are densified using horizontal ball milled WC-Co, WC-Co-Mo2C powders, and spark plasma sintering process (SPS process). Each SPSed Binderless-WC, WC-6 wt%Co-1 wt% Mo2C, and WC-6 wt%Co-2.5 wt% Mo2C hard materials are almost completely dense, with relative density of up to 99.5 % after the simultaneous application of pressure of 60 MPa and almost no significant change in grain size. The average grain sizes of WC for Binderless-WC, WC-6 wt%Co-1 wt% Mo2C, and WC-6 wt%Co-2.5 wt% Mo2C hard materials are about 0.37, 0.6, 0.54, and 0.43 ㎛, respectively. Mechanical properties, microstructure, and phase analysis of SPSed Binderless-WC, WC-6 wt%Co-1 wt% Mo2C, and WC-6 wt%Co-2.5 wt% Mo2C hard materials are investigated.
