With recent advances in engineering and technology, a damage on industrial machineries performing high-speed and high-power requirements has become a problem. There is an increasing possibility of cavitation damage, especially in pumps, propellers and high-speed vessels in a flowing liquid accordingly. There are several factors affecting cavitation damage on materials, including viscosity, pressure, temperature, amplitude applied. In this study, effects of cavity pressure in seawater on the damage for 5083-O aluminium alloy were evaluated by modulating amplitude. Trend of the damage with respect to time and amplitude was analyzed comparatively, and surface degradation of specimens was investigated by using Scanning Electron Microscope(SEM) and 3D microscope. The result reveals that the amount of the damage increased consistently with the increase in time and amplitude while the plastic deformation zone where no appreciable damage occurred was in less than 30 minutes.

It is generated for cavitation erosion due to the local static boiling by pressure differentials in high speed rotating fluid environment. The cavitation is influenced by various elements such as pressure, velocity, temperature, pH of fluid and medium. In particular, the damage of material is accelerated due to the electrochemical corrosion by $C1^-$ and cavitation erosion due to cavities in seawater. In this paper, hence, it investigated for martensite stainless steel the damage behavior with applied current density and cavitation time in natural seawater solution. Less damage depth at the cavitation condition was observed than static condition as a result of galvanostatic experiment. Furthermore, it was shown that dramatic increase of weightloss, damage rate and damage depth after 3 hour of cavitation test.

Various sealing techniques were applied to the anodized 5083 aluminum alloy for marine environment to reduce corrosion and cavitation erosion damage. Electrochemical experiments and cavitation erosion tests were conducted to evaluate the corrosion resistance and cavitation resistance of the anodic oxide film treated with sealing in natural seawater solution. Then, damaged surface morphology was analyzed by scanning electron microscope(SEM) and 3D microscope. As the results of the electrochemical experiments, it was observed that the surface damage of all the experimental conditions in the anodic polarization experiment was locally grown by the combination of crack and corrosion damage. In the Tafel analysis, the corrosion resistance of all sealing treatment conditions was improved compared to the anodizing. On the other hand, cavitation erosion tests showed that the anodizing and all the sealing treatment conditions generated local pit damage by cavitation erosion attack and grew to crater damage in the observation of damaged surface by SEM. Also, the weight loss and the surface damage depth measured with the experiment time presented that most of the sealing treatment conditions showed better cavitation erosion resistance than the anodizing, and they had an incubation period at the beginning of the experiment.

This investigation was to identify the electrochemical corrosion protection conditions to minimize the cavitation damage by generating hydrogen gas with the means of hydrogen overvoltage before the impact pressure of the cavity is transferred to the surface. The hybrid potentiostatic test method is designed to evaluate a complexed cavitation and electrochemical characteristic for ALBC3 alloy that is diverse and its broad applications fields in marine industry. The surface observation showed that neither the cavitation damage nor the electrochemical damage by the hydrogen gas generation occurred in the potential of -2.6 V under the cavitation environment. In the potentiostatic experiments under the cavitation environment, the cavities were reflected or cancelled out by the collision of the cavities with the hydrogen gas generated by the hydrogen overvoltage.

This investigation evaluated the effect of cavitation condition on electrochemical characteristics of 304 stainless steel, which is widely used for marine environment. The cavitation test with time were conducted on 304 stainless steel in seawater solution. Surface morphologies of specimen were observed by scanning electron microscope (SEM) and 3D microscope. Pitting depth, weight loss and damage rate were analyzed after each cavitation experiment. The surface damage was more severe as the current density increased. A dramatical increase in the damage depth and weight loss was observed after 7 hours of cavitation experiment.

Cavitation erosion-corrosion implies damage to materials due to the shock pressure or shock wave that results when bubbles form and collapse at a metal surface within a liquid. If the liquid is corrosive to the material, a condition typically encountered in industry, the component materials may suffer serious damage by a combination of mechanical and electrochemical attack. In this study, the mild steel(SS41) was tested by using the piezoelectric vibrator with 20kHz, 24$\mu$m to cavity generation apparatus. The damage behaviour of vibration cavitation erosion-corrosion and the environment characteristics were investigated in various solutions which are seawater, tap water and distilled water. The main results obtained are as follows; 1) The cavitation erosion-corrosion damage behaviour in the seawater increases to occur at the equal degree on the middle portion and the outside portion of specimen. The distilled water specimen, on other hand, occurs beginning on the outside portion across to the middle portion of specimen. 2) The cavitation erosion-corrosion damage in the tap water of low specific resistance more increases than that in the distilled water of high specific resistance at the initial testing time and more decreases than that in it by the CaCO sub(3) film with testing time. 3) Cavitation erosion-corrosion damage characteristic divides into four regions; incubation region, acceleration region, deceleration region and steady state region.

Cavitation phenomena during the injection process of the conventional fuel injection pump for a medium-speed diesel engine can cause surface damage with material removal or round-off on the plunger and barrel port and may shorten their expected life time. An experiment of flow visualization was carried out to investigate the main cause of these cavitation damages and find the prevention method. Experimental results of flow visualization show that these damages are mainly affected by fountain-like cavitation and jet-type cavitation generated before and after the end of fuel delivery process and therefore the prevention method was designed to control these cavitation flows. From the visualization and endurance test, it was proved that this method can effectively prevent cavitation damages by controlling cavitation flows.
Copper alloys are commonly applied to ship's propellers, pumps and valves which are serviced in seawater due to their good castability and corrosion resistance. In the environment of high flow velocity, however, erosion damage predominates over corrosion damage. In particular, the cavitation in seawater environment accelerates surface damage to copper alloys, resulting in degradation of products and economic losses and also threatening safety. The surface was coated with WC-27NiCr by high velocity oxygen fuel(HVOF) spraying technique to attain durability and cavitation resistance of copper alloys under high velocity/pressure flow. The cavitation test was performed for the WC-27NiCr coating deposited by HVOF in seawater at the amplitude of $30{\mu}m$ with seawater temperature. The cavitation at $15^{\circ}C$ caused exfoliation of the coating layer in 17.5 hours while that of $25^{\circ}C$ caused the exfoliation in 12.5 hours. When the temperature of seawater was elevated to $25^{\circ}C$ from $15^{\circ}C$, more damage was induced by over 160%. Although WC-27NiCr has good durability, corrosion resistance and eletrochemical stability, the cavitation damage rate of the coating layer could remarkably increase at the elevated temperatures under cavitation environments.
In the present study, a practical method to predict cavitation erosion, which caused a critical damage on hydraulic machineries, was developed. Impact and critical velocities were defined to develop a practical method for the prediction of cavitation erosion. To develope the practical method, the computational fluid dynamics (CFD) was introduced. Cavitating flows with erosion in a converging-diverging nozzle and around a hydrofoil were simulated by developed and validated code. Based on the CFD results, the cavitation erosion coefficient was derived by a curve fitting method. The cavitation erosion coefficient was formulated as the function of the cavitation and Reynolds numbers. A cavitating flow in an axisymmetric nozzle followed by radial divergence was simulated to validate the developed practical method. For the application to a propeller, a cavitating flow around a propeller was simulated. Predicted damage extent showed similar with damaged full-scale propeller blade.

The use of gas absorption refrigeration machine has considerably increased because of the shortage of the electric power in the summer and the regulation of freon refrigerant. Gas absorption refrigeration machine consists of a condenser, a heat exchanger. supplying pipes, a radiator etc, This system is likely to be corroded by acid. dissolved oxygen and gases, Cavitation erosion-corrosion by flow velocity of cooling water may happen in absorption refrigeration machine. In these cases. erosion and corrosion occur simultaneously. Then, it makes a serious damage with synergy effect. Therefore, this paper was studied on the cavitation damage of cupronickel(70/30) tube for gas absorption refrigeration machine, In the $30^{\circ}C$ tap water, linear polarization test and anodic polarization test were carried out for copper(C1220T-OL) and cupronickel(70/30) tube. Also, cavitation erosion-corrosion behavior of cupronickel (70/30) tube was considered, The main results are as following: (1) In the linear test, the corrosion current density of cupronickel(70/30) is higher than that of copper. (2) The erosion-corrosion rate of cupronickel(70/30) displayed later tendency than that of copper by vibratory cavitation in cooling water. (3) In cooling water, the progress mechanism of erosion-corrosion rate of copper and cupronickel(70/30) follows a pattern of incubation, acceleration, attenuation and a steady state period.
