  • This paper proposes a method for selecting the capacitance of DC-link capacitors of inverters. In general, the DC-link capacitance of the inverter system must be considered for DC-link voltage, ripple current, switching frequency, ripple voltage, and pulse-width modulation techniques. Therefore, the appropriate capacitance can be determined by finding the rms and peak values of the ripple current of the capacitor. In this paper, the process of extracting the ripple current of DC-link capacitor is described in detail. In addition, the simple method for finding DC-link capacitor capacitance using the result value is presented through the simulations.

  • Carbon aerogels are promising materials as electrodes for electrical double layer capacitors (EDLCs). An optimum process is presented for synthesis of nanoporous carbon aerogels via pyrolyzing resorcinol-formaldehyde (RF) organic aerogels, which could be cost-effectively manufactured from RF wet gels. The major reactions between resorcinol and formaldehyde include an addition reaction to form hydroxymethyl derivatives ($-CH_2OH$), and then a condensation reaction of the hydroxymethyl derivatives ($-CH_2-$)- and methylene ether ($-CH_2OCH_2-$) bridged compounds. The textural properties of carbon aerogels obtained were characterized by nitrogen adsorption/desorption analysis and SEM and TEM. The application of the resultant carbon for electrodes of electric double layers capacitor (EDLC) in organic TEABF4/ACN electrolyte indicated that the ESR, as low as 55 $m{\Omega}$, was smaller than for commercially activated carbons. And EDLC with carbon Aerogel electrodes has an excellent stable more than for commercially activated carbons.

  • A high step-up dc-dc converter is proposed for photovoltaic power systems in this paper. The proposed converter consists of an input current doubler, a symmetrical switched-capacitor doubler and an active-clamp circuit. The input current doubler minimizes the input current ripple. The symmetrical switched-capacitor doubler is composed of two symmetrical quasi-resonant switched-capacitor circuits, which share the leakage inductance of the transformer as a resonant inductor. The rectifier diodes (switched-capacitor circuit) are turned off at the zero current switching (ZCS) condition, so that the reverse-recovery problem of the diodes is removed. In addition, the symmetrical structure results in an output voltage ripple reduction because the voltage ripples of the charge/pump capacitors cancel each other out. Meanwhile, the voltage stress of the rectifier diodes is clamped at half of the output voltage. In addition, the active-clamp circuit clamps the voltage surges of the switches and recycles the energy of the transformer leakage inductance. Furthermore, pulse-width modulation plus phase angle shift (PPAS) is employed to control the output voltage. The operation principle of the converter is analyzed and experimental results obtained from a 400W prototype are presented to validate the performance of the proposed converter.

  • Light emitting diode(LED) lighting has been applied various industry fields because of its high efficiency, low power consumption, long life time, and environment friendly characteristics. Generally, LED lighting needs a driver to maintain constant current. Most popular driver is the switching converter. In the converter, there are several electrolytic capacitors. However the lifespan of the electrolytic capacitor is much shorter than LED. Therefore the lifespan of LED lighting with electrolytic capacitor is decreased. Also, LED lighting needs dimming control because of various needs and energy saving. This paper presents the dimmable single-stage PFC DCM flyback converter without electrolytic capacitor and parallel LC resonant filter for reducing 120[Hz] ripple on the output. The type 2 controller is used to maintain constant current and the analog dimming control is used. The proposed converter is verified through simulation and experimental works.

  • For grid-connected LCL-filtered inverters, dual-loop current control with an inner-loop active damping (AD) based on capacitor current feedback is generally used for the sake of current quality. However, existing studies on capacitor current feedback AD with a control delay do not reveal the mathematical relation among the dual-loop stability, capacitor current feedback factor, delay time and LCL parameters. The robustness was not investigated through mathematical derivations. Thus, this paper aims to provide a systematic study of dual-loop current control in a digitally-controlled inverter. At first, the stable region of the inner-loop AD is derived. Then, the dual-loop stability and robustness are analyzed by mathematical derivations when the inner-loop AD is stable and unstable. Robust design principles for the inner-loop AD feedback factor and the outer-loop current controller are derived. Most importantly, ensuring the stability of the inner-loop AD is critical for achieving high robustness against a large grid impedance. Then, several improved approaches are proposed and synthesized. The limitations and benefits of all of the approaches are identified to help engineers apply capacitor current feedback AD in practice.

  • Proportional capacitor-current-feedback active damping (AD) is a common damping method for the resonance of LCL-type grid-connected inverters. Proportional capacitor-current-feedback AD behaves as a virtual resistor in parallel with the capacitor. However, the existence of delay in the actual control system causes impedance in the virtual resistor. Impedance is manifested as negative resistance when the resonance frequency exceeds one-sixth of the sampling frequency ($f_s/6$). As a result, the damping effect disappears. To extend the system damping region, this study proposes a virtual resistor-inductor-capacitor (RLC) AD method. The method is implemented by feeding the filter capacitor current passing through a band-pass filter, which functions as a virtual RLC in parallel with the filter capacitor to achieve positive resistance in a wide resonance frequency range. A combination of Nyquist theory and system close-loop pole-zero diagrams is used for damping parameter design to obtain optimal damping parameters. An experiment is performed with a 10 kW grid-connected inverter. The effectiveness of the proposed AD method and the system's robustness against grid impedance variation are demonstrated.

  • This paper presents a low-power voltage converter based on a reconfigurable capacitor array. Its energy recycling capacitor array stores the energy during a charge stage and supplies the voltage during an energy recycle stage even after the power source is disconnected. The converter reconfigures the capacitor array step-wise to boost the lost voltage level during the energy recycle stage. Its energy saving is particularly effective when most of the energy remaining in the charge capacitors is wasted by the leakage current during a longer sleep period. Simulations have been conducted using a voltage source of 500 mV to supply a $V_{DD}$ of around 800 mV to a load circuit consisting of four 32-bit adders in a 65-nm CMOS process. Results demonstrate energy recycling efficiency of 85.86% and overall energy saving of 40.14% compared to a conventional converter, when the load circuit is shortly active followed by a long sleep period.

  • Renewable energy resources such as wind and photovoltaic power generation systems demand a high step-up DC-DC converters to convert the low voltage to commercial grid voltage. However, the high step-up converter using a transformer has limitations of high voltage stresses of switches and diodes when the transformer winding ratio increases. Accordingly, conventional studies have been applied to series-connect multioutput converters such as forward-flyback and switched-capacitor flyback to reduce the transformer winding ratio. This paper proposes new single-ended converter topologies of an isolation type and a non-isolation type to improve power efficiency, cost-effectiveness, and output ripple. The first proposal is an isolation-type charge-pump switched-capacitor flyback converter that includes an extreme-ratio isolation switched-capacitor cell with a chargepump circuit. It reduces the transformer winding number and the output ripple, and further improves power efficiency without any cost increase. The next proposal is a non-isolation charge-pump switched-capacitor-flyback tapped-inductor boost converter, which adds a charge-pump-connected flyback circuit to the conventional switched-capacitor boost converter to improve the power efficiency and to reduce the efficiency degradation from the input variation. In this paper, the operation principle of the proposed scheme is presented with the experimental results of the 100 W DC-DC converter for verification.

  • Electrochemical capacitor made with metal oxide electrode uses rapid and reversible protonation/deprotonation of metal oxide material under the aqueous acidic solution, generally. Electrochemical stability window of aqueous electrolyte-type capacitor is narrow compared to that of organic electrolyte-type capacitor. Electrochemical characteristics of electrochemical capacitor made with metal oxide electrode and lithium cation based organic electrolyte were evaluated. Electrochemical capacitor based on $RuO_2$ electrode material and 1M $LiPF_6$ in mixed solvents of EC, DEC, and EMC has anodic and cathodic specific capacitance of 145 and 142 F/g-$RuO_2{\cdot}nH_2O$, respectively, by using cyclic voltammetry with scan rate of 2 mV/sec g-$RuO_2$ in potential range of 2.0~4.2V(Li|$Li^+$).

  • Crowbar system is usually applied to a pulsed power system in which a capacitor bank is discharged into a load. This provides a free wheeling path for the load current and prevents the capacitor from recharging due to a reverse voltage. Usually diodes have been used as a crowbar switch, but it is not a practical system because the cost of the diodes goes up enormously with increasing the system voltage and current. This paper presents a novel protection scheme of a charging and discharging system of a 300 kJ capacitor bank using a low-cost crowbar system which consists of a crowbar switch and resistors. Triggered vacuum switch(TVS) was used for a crowbar switch, and Rogowski coil was used to determine a trigger time of TVS. When this crowbar system is applied to our pulsed power system which consists of capacitor bank($123muF$), inductor() for forming a pulse, load resistor$(100 m\Omega)$, and a closing switch, instantaneous reversal voltage of capacitor bank could be limited less than 1.8 ㎸ until capacitor bank was charred to 17 ㎸.
