  • It is important to understand the current status and problems of the North Korean shipping industry to prepare for inter-Korean trade in the future era of peace in the Korean Peninsula. In this study, the status of vessels calling in North and South ports was analyzed by year, cargo type (vessel type), and North Korean port type using Port-MIS data. In particular, considering the three years (2006-2008) in which inter-Korean trade was the most active, the flow of maritime transport was analyzed by visualizing data on vessels' arrival and departure in the North and South ports. Findings revealed that sea transportation between Haeju-Incheon was the most frequent, while the Haeju-Mokpo and Nampo-Incheon routes in the west coast area, and the Najin-Busan route in the east coast area were active. With reference to general cargo vessels, ports located on the west coast of Korea tended to operate between those located on the North coast of North Korea and on the east coast of South Korea. These results are expected to serve as a basis for establishing research and policies related to coastal shipping between the two Koreas in the future.

  • The purpose of this study is to find out how to improve tourism competitiveness of cruise harbours in Korea by analyzing tourism satisfaction level of international cruise visitors to Korea, who are increasing rapidly as Northeast Asian cruise tourism market is growing up. In this study we analyzed the factors of effects on tourism satisfaction level by Chinese visitors, Japanese visitors and English speaking visitors respectively based on the results of "International Cruise Visitor Survey 2012". The results of this study show that the individual satisfaction level of port of calling & tour schedule, immigration procedures, transportation, shopping influenced overall tourism satisfaction level by countries. It implied that those attributes should be reflected hereafter when we establish a marketing strategy for each of cruise cities. This study has a great significance in that those results suggest useful information when we make plans not only for activating cruise harbours but also for cruise tour marketing.

  • Sedimentation is a common problem for river ports. But its intensity depends on the rate of sedimentation, channel shape and size, hydrodynamic behavior of the river and the importance of the port. High sedimentation rate in Yangon River has become one major issue for Myanmar as her largest port is located on the Yangon riverbank. As a result of the high sedimentation rate, shallow water area near the confluence of Yangon River, Pazundaung Creek, and Bago River keeps blocking the navigation channel to the Yangon Port, which also limits the size of vessel calling to Yangon Port. Therefore, studies to understand sediment transport process in Yangon River are required because the economic development of Myanmar highly relies on the Yangon Port. This paper aims to calculate the sediment transport and to predict the riverbed elevation changes in Yangon River by using Bagnold (1966) theory. Calculation result shows that huge difference can be found in the bed load transport between the rainy season and dry season in Yangon River, and thus the sedimentation problem would become more severe in the dry season when the transported sediments are reduced. The estimated sedimentation rate in dry season indicates that the rate of riverbed level rise near the Yangon Port area is about 0.063 m per year, which would lead to approximately 3.15 m rise in the riverbed level in next 50 yrs, considering the same workload of dredging to maintain the navigation channel.

  • In order to strengthen the competitiveness of port against calling for the huge vessel and reducing the shipping service time, the productivity of container terminal must be improved. This productivity variously results according to the kinds of productivity evaluation model, input elements like yard, equipment, employee, facility, etc,. But, it is discussed that the productivity is measured by partial productivity evaluation model or general input elements. Therefore, we measured for the productivity of the container terminal using the Developed the data Envelopment Analysis (DEA), which is developed in order to evaluate the relative efficiency of decision making units - it's difficult to clear cause and effect between input and output. We measured the whole productivity of container terminal in Busan according to decision of the correct input elements. And we investigated the change of the productivity measurement result according to input elements, presents more accurate productivity evaluation model in container terminal.

  • The recent rapid increase of international ocean cruises calling at Korea has prompted the interests of central and local governments in promotion of cruise ship tour. Korea's cruise tour policies and facility improvement plans tend to be focused only on main ports of cities with high calls at cruise port, such as Busan, Incheon, and Jeju. However, small and medium-sized ocean cities which represent the coastal areas are also seeking to activate cruise ship tour and attract investment, and therefore they merit governmental support as well. This study looks at the current conditions of cruise tourism in small and medium-sized ocean cities and searches for the means to activate cruise tours. It suggests improvement policies for port services, transport accessibility, urban facilities and tour activity support, as well as expected roles of public and private sector. As a case study of Yeosu in Jeollanam-do, it analyzes the present state and discusses possible future activation programs, comparing small and medium-sized cities with cities with main ports. In order to be a port of call, steady exertions for improvement are required in all areas regarding cruise tourism whether it's main or local. Especially, since local ports in small and medium-sized ocean cities are relatively unlikely to be developed into home ports, policies and tourism programs should be established to support them in being chosen as ports of call.

  • The number of ships serviced at the container terminals in Busan is increasing by 2.9% per year. In spite of the increase in calling ships, there are no official records of waiting rate by the port authority. This study attempts to compare the theoretical ship waiting ratio and actual ship waiting ratio. The actual ship waiting ratio of container terminals is acquired from the 2014 to 2016 data of PORT-MIS and Terminal Operating System (TOS). Furthermore, methods and procedures to measure the actual ship's waiting rate of container terminal are proposed for ongoing measurement. In drawing the theoretical ship waiting ratio, the queuing theory is applied after deploying the ship arrival probability distribution and ship service probability distribution by the Chi Square method. As a result, the total number of ships waiting in a terminal for three years was 587, the average monthly service time and the average waiting time was 13.8 hours and 17.1 hours, respectively, and the monthly number of waiting ships was 16.3. Meanwhile, according to the queuing theory with multi servers, the ship waiting ratio is 31.1% on a 70% berth occupancy ratio. The reason behind the huge gap is the congested sailing in the peak days of the week, such as Sunday, Tuesday, and Wednesday. In addition, the number of waiting ships recorded on Sundays was twice as much as the average number of waiting ships.

  • This study aims to find out the relationship of customer behavioral intention and marketing variables such as service quality and customer satisfaction which are regarded as its determinants. And then this study has suggested what service factors shall be emphasized to induce the latent customers. And it has grouped strategic Schemes on which service variables shall be focused to enhance the existing customer behavioral intentions. This study has found, to the existing customers, only physical environments among 3 dimension components of Service quality significantly affects to the Behavioral intentions. Priorly, marketing efforts, namely, expansion of convenient facilities such as special berth construction is necessary. To the latent customer, service delivery is the most powerful factor to the behavioral intentions. Consequently, frequency of cruise calling, Facilities of shopping and eating, issues and their development of cruise goods and publicity and promotions are needed.

  • The appearance of over 10,000 TEU containerships (so called Mega-containerships) is determined. In order to operate these ships effectively, the number of these calling ports will diminish, and then feeder ships will transport cargoes from the hub-ports where mega-containerships call to the destination ports. In the hub-ports, handling containers for mega-containerships become huger, thus it is important for terminals to deal with cargo handling as soon as possible. However, the present terminal layout might have the limitation of maximum throughput per time unit. And then the transit time at the ports become longer. Therefore, we investigate the effect on some different terminal layouts with new alternatives. Actually, we discuss the ship-to-berth allocation at some adjacent berths for mega-containerships on three types of terminal layouts. First one is the conventional type consisted by some linear berths, most container terminals in the world are normally this type. Second one is the indented type consisted by linear berths and indented berths which we can handle from both sides of mega-containership simultaneously. Third one is the floating type consisted by linear berths and the floating berth. On this type, mega-containerships can moor between linear and floating berths. The merits of this type are that we can also handle from both sides of mega-containerships simultaneously, and ships can go through between linear berth and floating berths. Thus it is easier for ships to moor and leave berths. Under such assumptions, we examine the numerical experiments. In most cases, the total service times on the indented type are the longest among three types, these on the floating type are the next longer. Those reasons are that these layouts have the differences of berth occupancy obtained by the time and space axes, and whether the precedence constraints of ship service order needs or not.

  • This paper treats the berth planning problem which is encountered at public container terminals. The main issue of the berth planning problem is to decide how to allocate the berths to scheduled calling containerships of which the ETA' s are given beforehand. Three optimization models for the berth planning problem are proposed in the formulation of set problems. Some heuristic algorithms for generating the decision variables of the models are also devised by using the concept of the ship's waiting time and the modified berth occupancy rate. Computational experiments based on the data arising from the real public container terminal are also carried out and the results are reported to show that the proposed optimization models and the heuristic algorithms for generating the decision variables are applicable and useful for the berth planning problem at public container terminals.
