  • Objectives of this study was to investigate effects of supplemental chromium (Cr) as CrP in growing pigs treated with pST. Seventy two Landrace pigs weighing average 60 kg were alloted to the three treatments during the 52-d experimental period: control (corn-soybean basal diet); pST treatment (4 mg/head/day); pST + CrP treatment (4 mg and 200 ppb/head/day). Upon termination of feeding trial weighing average 105 kg, thirty-six pigs randomly selected from each treatment were slaughtered to compare carcass traits. For the study of lipid metabolism, eighteen pigs were alloted to the same treatments. Adipose tissue samples from eighteen pigs were collected to investigate lipid metabolism. All treated samples with pST and pST + CrP showed improvements in daily weight gain, regardless of sex. Feed/gain ratio significantly improved in pigs treated with pST and pST + CrP. Dressing percentages were higher in pigs treated with pST and pST + Crp. Carcass grades were significantly higher in pigs treated with pST and pST + CrP. Lipolysis of adipose tissue measured in vitro was significantly increased in pigs treated with pST, lipogenesis in vitro showed opposite tendency. Even though the current data does not show synergistic effects on the above parameters when CrP and pST were supplied at the same time, but CrP supplementation tended to improve growth performance and carcass traits of pigs treated with pST.

  • Effects of Cr and Ni addition on damping capacity, mechanical property, and corrosion resistance of Fe-17%Mn martensitic alloy have been studied. Martensite start temperature($M_{S}$) of the alloy decreases linearly with increasing Cr and Ni contents up to 15%. The damping capacity decreases gradually from 27 to 22% in specific damping capacity(SDC) with increasing Cr and Ni contents from zero to 10%, and decreases rapidly with further Cr and Ni content in Fe-17%Mn alloy. The tensile strength of the alloy maintains a level of 60 $kgf/mm^{2}$ regardless of Cr content with an elongation of 20 to 25%. But, in case of Fe-17%Mn-x%Ni alloy, the tensile strength decreased rapidly with the Ni content of above 10% because of austenite morphology. Immersion test in 5% NaCl solution leads to the result that the corrosion resistance of the alloy becomes excellent above 10% Cr. From the above results, it is concluded that the optimum Cr content to improve the mechanical property and corrosion resistance of the alloy in 5%NaCl solution with a lesser decrease in damping capacity is about 10%. In the case of 5% $H_{2}SO_{4}$ condition, the Fe-17%Mn-10%Ni is an optimum alloy.

  • CrN coatings have been used as protective coatings for cutting tools, forming tools, and various tribological machining applications because these coatings have high hardness. Cr-Al-N coatings have been investigated to improve the properties of CrN coatings. Cr-Al-N coatings were fabricated by a hybrid physical vapor deposition method consisting of unbalanced magnetron sputtering and arc ion plating with different working pressure and substrate bias voltage. The phase analysis of the composition was performed using XRD (x-ray diffraction). Cr-Al-N coatings were grown with textured CrN phase and (111), (200), and (220) planes. The adhesion strength of the coatings tested by scratch test increased. The friction coefficient and removal rate of the coatings were measured by a ball-on-disk test. The friction coefficient and removal rate of the coatings decreased from 0.46. to 0.22, and from $2.00{\times}10^{-12}m^2/N$ to $1.31{\times}10^{-13}m^2/N$, respectively, with increasing bias voltage. The tribological properties of the coatings increased with increasing substrate bias voltage.

  • The properties of black ceramic pigments including thermal and glaze stability were systematically investigated so that these pigments could be used to decorate porcelain products. Various compositions of $(Ni,Mn)(Fe,Cr,Mn)_2O_4$ and $Co(Fe,Cr)_2O_4$ powders were synthesised using a solid state reaction method. The obtained $Co(Fe,Cr)_2O_4$ and $(Ni,Mn)(Fe,Cr,Mn)_2O_4$ powders showed single phases of spinel structure after calcination processes at $1000^{\circ}C$ and $1200^{\circ}C$, respectively. CIE $L^*a^*b^*$ colourimetric parameters of glazed $Co(Fe,Cr)_2O_4$ and $(Ni,Mn)(Fe,Cr,Mn)_2O_4$ pigments were analyzed according to the different amounts of Cr substitution. In addition, the amount of $Cr^{+6}$ remaining in the $Co(Fe,Cr)_2O_4$ and $(Ni,Mn)(Fe,Cr,Mn)_2O_4$ pigments was also measured.

  • To get a fine $LiFePO_4$ powder with high electrical conductivity, the influences of doping of aliovalent elements(Cr+B and Cr+Al) on electrical conductivity and of heat treatment conditions on particle size of the doped powders were studied. Two kinds of the doped powders $LiFe_{0.965}Cr_{0.03}B_{0.005}PO_4$ and $LiFe_{0.065}Cr_{0.03}Al_{0.005}PO_4$ were synthesized using mechanochemical milling and subsequent heat treatment at $675{\sim}750^{\circ}C$ for $5{\sim}10\;h$. The doping enhanced grain growth and electrical conductivity. The electrical conductivity at $30^{\circ}C$ was $1{\times}10^{-8}S/cm$ in the doped with Cr and Al, and $5{\times}10^{-10}S/cm$ in the undoped one.

  • The Cr-Zr-N films have much improved mechanical properties and very smooth surface roughness. However, in spite of their outstanding properties, the Cr-Zr-N coatings revealed their mechanical properties deteriorated severely with increasing Zr content at $500^{\circ}C$ ecause of very rapid oxidation. Recently oxynitride films have been widely studied due to their excellent unique mechanical properties and oxidation resistance. In this work, CrZr-O-N films with various O contents were synthesized by unbalanced magnetron sputtering with Cr-Zr segment targets (Cr:Zr volume ratios is 1:1) and all films were prepared in a nitrogen rich mixture of N2 and O2. Characteristics such as crystalline structure, hardness and chemical composition as a function of the O content were investigated by X-ray diffraction (XRD), field emission scanning electron microscope (FE-SEM), microhardness testing system and energy dispersive spectroscopy (EDS). Results showed that the thin films had dense and compact microstructure as O content in the films increases. The microstructure of the thin films consisted of mainly crystalline Cr (Zr)N phase and Cr2O3 phase. The maximum hardness and elastic modulus of the films was measured to be approximately 33.2 GPa and 280.6 GPa from the films with low content of O elements. Detailed experimental results will be presented.

  • The biomass of the brown seaweed, Ecklonia, was used to remove Cr(VI) from wastewater. Previously, Cr(VI) was removed through its reduction to Cr(III) when brought into contact with the biomass. In this study, the effects of ionic strength, background electrolytes, and Cr(III), Ni(II), Zn(II), and Fe(III) on the Cr(VI) reduction were examined. An increased ionic strength inhibited the Cr(VI) reduction. The presence of other heavy metals, such as Cr(III), Ni(II), or Zn(II), only slightly affected the Cr(VI) reduction, while Fe(III) enhanced the reduction. Although the above various parameters could affect the reduction rate of Cr(VI) by Ecklonia biomass, these effects were relatively smaller than those of pH and temperature. In addition, the previously derived rate equation was found to be applicable over a range of ionic strengths and with different background electrolytes. In conclusion, Ecklonia, bioniass may be a good candidate as a biosorbent for the removal of Cr(VI) from wastewaters containing various other impurities, and scale-up to a practical process may be accomplished using the previously derived rate equation.

  • For the better success of biomedical implant surgery, we used a modified solution combustion method to synthesize Hydroxyapatite (HA) and Chromium ($Cr^{3+}$) modified Cr-HA with different concentrations of 0.5, 1.0, 1.5, 2.0 and 2.5. The Cr-HA nanopowder was characterized by TGA, XRD, SEM-EDS and TEM. The HA and Cr-HA powders were subjected to in vitro biological studies to determine their biocompatibility and hemocompatibility. The cytotoxicity of HA and Cr-HA were evaluated on Hela (Cervical cancer) cells and L929 (mouse fibroblast) cells by using MTT assay. Hemocompatibility studies demonstrated a noticeable haemolytic ratio below 5%, which confirms that these materials are compatible in nature with human blood. The results of the present work confirm that the synthesised HA and Cr-HA are biocompatible and can be extensively used in the biomedical field to improve overall material biological properties.

  • Effects of sealant and sealing procedure on corrosion resistance of high velocity oxy-fuel (HVOF) sprayed coatings were studied. HVOF-sprayed CrC-20NiCr coatings were sealed using three commercial sealants based on phenolics and epoxy. Penetration depth of sealants, measured by fluorescent microscope technique, was between $19{\mu}m$ and $340{\mu}m$ depending on sealant, sealing condition or sealing procedure. It was found that sealing on rotation status was more effective than that on stationary specimen due to the Coriolis effect of fluid in pores of the coating. From the CASS results, corrosion resistance of properly sealed CrC-20NiCr coatings was equal to that of hexa-valent chromium plating.

  • In this work a multi-layered nanostructured TiAIN/CrN superlattice coatings was synthesized using closed-field unbalanced magnetron sputtering method and the relationships between their superlattice period (1), micro-structure, hardness and elastic modulus were investigated. In addition, wear test at $500^{\circ}C$ and oxidation resistance test at $900^{\circ}C$ were performed to investigate high temperature properties of these thin films. The coatings were characterized in terms of microstructure and mechanical properties by transmission electron microscopy (TEM) and nano-indentation test. Results from TEM analysis showed that superlattice periods was inversely proportional to the jig rotation speed. The maximum hardness and elastic modulus of 37 GPa and 375 GPa were observed at superalttice period of 6.1 nm and 4.4 nm, respectively. An higher value of microhardness from TiAIN/CrN thin films than either TiAIN (30 GPa) or CrN (26 GPa) was noted while the elastic modulus was approximately an average of TiAIN and CrN films. These enhancement effects in superlattice films could be attributed to the resistance to dislocation glide across interface between the CrN and TiAIN layers. Much improved plastic deformation resistance ($H^3/E^2$) of 0.36 from TiAIN/CrN coatings was observed, compared with 0.15 and 0.16 from TiAIN and CrN, respectively. Also the wear resistance at $500^{\circ}C$ was largely increased than those of single TiAIN and CrN coatings and TiAIN/CrN coatings showed much reduced weight gain after exposure at $900^{\circ}C$ for 20 hours.
