  • Human behavior recognition using an accelerometer has been applied to various fields. As smartphones have become used commonly, a method for human behavior recognition using the acceleration sensor built into the smartphone is being studied. In the case of the elderly, falling often leads to serious injuries, and falls are one of the major causes of accidents at construction fields. In this article, we proposed recognition method for human falling direction using built-in acceleration sensor and orientation sensor in the smartphone. In the past, it was a common method to use the magnitude of the acceleration vector to recognize human behavior. These days, deep learning has been actively studied and applied to various areas. In this article, we propose a method for recognizing the direction of human falling by applying the deep learning multilayer technique, which has been widely used recently.

  • To increase the throughput of tip-based nanolithography (TBN), one approach is to use a large array of such tips working in parallel. It is important to maintain co-planarity between the tip array and the writing surface. A slight misalignment can cause large discrepancies of contact force and feature sizes. We report a capacitive proximity sensor built-in with the TBN array for leveling an arrayed polymer pen array. The device allows alignment between an array of writing tips and the writing substrate without contact and contamination. The angular sensitivity of the sensor is $0.05^{\circ}$ for an array with maximum tip-to-tip separation of 100 mm.

  • ThisPaper investigates the feasibility of using acoustic emission signal analysis for the detection of built-up edge during machining. Experiments were conducted on a CNC-lathe using conventional carbide insert tools under various cutting conditions. The cutting forces were also measured for comparisons. Experimental evidence is presented which indicates that the presence of a built-up edge can significantly affect the generation of acoustic emission in metal cutting. It is shown that under conditions in which a built-up edge is generated, the variation of $AE_{rms}$ signal with cutting speed can be quite different from the generally accepted linear, monotonic increase as previously reported. The feasibility of utilizing $AE_{rms}$ in built-up edge sensing is suggested.

  • Most autonomous mobile robots view things only in front of them. As a result they may collide against objects moving from the side or behind. To overcome the problem we have built an Active Omni-directional Range Sensor that can obtain omni-directional depth data by a laser conic plane and a conic mirror. Also we proposed a self-localization algorithm of mobile robot in unknown environment by fusion of Odometer and Active Omn-directional Range Sensor.

  • The slope of the ramp generator in a single slope ADC(analog-to-digital converter) suffers from process and frequency variation. This variation in ramp slope causes ADC gain variation and eventually limits the performance of the ISP(image signal processing) in a CIS(CMOS image sensor) that uses the single slope ADC. This paper proposes a ramp slope BISC(built-in-self-calibration) scheme for CIS. The CIS with proposed BISC was fabricated with a $0.35{\mu}m$ process. The measurement results show that the proposed architecture effectively calibrate the ramp slope against process and clock frequency variation. The silicon area overhead is less than $0.7\%$ of the full chip area.

  • Wireless Sensor Networks is applied to improvement of life convenience or service like U-City as well as environment pollution, tunnel and structural health monitoring, storm, and earthquake diagnostic system. To increase the usability of sensor data and applicability, mobile devices and their facilities allow the applications of sensor networks to give mobile users and actuators the results of event detection at anytime and anywhere. In this paper, we present MUSNEMO(Multi-sensor centric Ubiquitous Smart sensor NEtwork using Mobile devices) developed system for providing more efficient and valuable information services with a variety of mobile devices and network camera integrated to WSN. Our system is performed based on IEEE 802.15.4 protocol stack. To validate system usability, we built sensor network environments where were equipped with five application sensors such magnetic, photodiode, microphone, motion and vibration. We also built and tested proposed MUSNEMO to provide a novel model for event detection systems with mobile framework.

  • This paper presents the development of a collocated capacitance sensor and its application to the decentralized PID controller design for 4-axis magnetic bearing system. The main feature of the sensor is that it is made of a compact printed circuit board (PCB) so that it can be built in to the actuator coil of the magnetic bearing unit. The signal processing unit has been also developed. Then, decentralized PED controller is designed using simplified rotor system model. Finally, the experimental results on the performance of the collocated sensor based decentralized PID controller for a magnetic bearing rotor system is presented.

  • This paper presents an automatic back-light brightness control system for mobile displays. One of the most important factors in mobile display is the power consumption due to the limited and movable power source. More than 80% of power of the LCD display is consumed by LED bark-light unit (BLU). The target brightness also becomes higher because of its moving picture and high resolution image, so there are some side effects for not only excessive power consumption but also ergonomic inconvenience in dark environment. To prevent this discomfort and reduce power consumption, this paper proposes automatic brightness control (ABC) technique in mobile displays. Developed system contains TFT-LCD panel with built-in photo sensor, driver IC capable of controlling photo sensor, and BLU. Since the photo sensor array built in panel detects automatically outdoor ambient light intensity, the power of BLU in dark environment is reduced. Developed ABC system showed reduced power consumption of 50% in dark environment. We believe that the proposed system is very useful to control power of mobile TFT-LCD.

  • Smartphones have various sensors built in. In particular, acceleration sensors are used to analyze human behavior because they can detect movement of objects. Previous studies have analyzed the behavior of people by analyzing the magnitude of acceleration sensor values. In this study, we proposed a method of detecting the motion by applying the K-average of the acceleration sensor value built in the smartphone. We proposed a method of recognizing walking and running, which is basic human behavior, by applying K-average of acceleration sensor value of smartphone.

  • There is an increasing interest in health and research on methods for measuring human body information. The importance of continuously observing information such as the step change and the walking speed is increasing. At a person's gait, information about the disease and the currently weakened area can be known. In this paper, gait is measured using wearable walking module built in shoes. We want to make continuous measurement possible by simplifying gait measurement method. This module is designed to receive information of gyro sensor and acceleration sensor. The designed module is capable of WiFi communication and the collected walking information is stored in the server. The information stored in the server is corrected by integrating the acceleration sensor and the gyro sensor value. A band-pass filter was used to reduce the error. This data is categorized by the Gait Finder into walking and waiting states. When walking, each step is divided and stored separately for analysis.
