A High-efficiency Method to Suppress Transformer Core Imbalance in Digitally Controlled Phase-shifted Full-bridge Converter

  • A high-efficiency method is proposed to suppress magnetic core imbalance in phase-shifted full-bridge (PSFB) converters. Compared with conventional solutions, such as controlling peak current mode (PCM) or adding DC blocking capacitance, the proposed method has several advantages, such as lower power loss and smaller size, because the additional current sensor or blocking capacitor is removed. A time domain model of the secondary side is built to analyze the relationship between transformer core imbalance and cathode voltage of secondary side rectifiers. An approximate control algorithm is designed to achieve asymmetric phase control, which reduces the effects of imbalance. A 60 V/15 A prototype is built to verify the proposed method. Experimental results show that the numerical difference of primary side peak currents between two adjacent cycles is suppressed from 2 A to approximately 0 A. Meanwhile, compared with the PCM solution, the efficiency of the PSFB converter is slightly improved from 93% to 93.2%.

Interleaved ZVS DC/DC Converter with Balanced Input Capacitor Voltages for High-voltage Applications

  • A new DC/DC converter with zero voltage switching is proposed for applications with high input voltage and high load current. The proposed converter has two circuit modules that share load current and power rating. Interleaved pulse-width modulation (PWM) is adopted to generate switch control signals. Thus, ripple currents are reduced at the input and output sides. For high-voltage applications, each circuit module includes two half-bridge legs that are connected in series to reduce switch voltage rating to $V_{in}/2$. These legs are controlled with the use of asymmetric PWM. To reduce the current rating of rectifier diodes and share load current for high-load-current applications, two center-tapped rectifiers are adopted in each circuit module. The primary windings of two transformers are connected in series at the high voltage side to balance output inductor currents. Two series capacitors are adopted at the AC terminals of the two half-bridge legs to balance the two input capacitor voltages. The resonant behavior of the inductance and capacitance at the transition interval enable MOSFETs to be switched on under zero voltage switching. The circuit configuration, system characteristics, and design are discussed in detail. Experiments based on a laboratory prototype are conducted to verify the effectiveness of the proposed converter.

Dual-Output Single-Stage Bridgeless SEPIC with Power Factor Correction

  • This study proposes a dual-output single-stage bridgeless single-ended primary-inductor converter (DOSSBS) that can completely remove the front-end full-bridge alternating current-direct current rectifier to accomplish power factor correction for universal line input. Without the need for bridge diodes, the proposed converter has the advantages of low component count and simple structure, and can thus significantly reduce power loss. DOSSBS has two uncommon output ports to provide different voltage levels to loads, instead of using two separate power factor correctors or multi-stage configurations in a single stage. Therefore, this proposed converter is cost-effective and compact. A magnetically coupled inductor is introduced in DOSSBS to replace two separate inductors to decrease volume and cost. Energy stored in the leakage inductance of the coupled inductor can be completely recycled. In each line cycle, the two active switches in DOSSBS are operated in either high-frequency pulse-width modulation pattern or low-frequency rectifying mode for switching loss reduction. A prototype for dealing with an $85-265V_{rms}$ universal line is designed, analyzed, and built. Practical measurements demonstrate the feasibility and functionality of the proposed converter.

  • 본 논문에서는 능동 클램프 회로를 이용한 위상천이 풀-브리지 컨버터(Phase-shift Full-Bridge Converter)의 스위치 제어 방법을 제안한다. 기존의 위상천이 풀-브리지 컨버터는 2차측 정류 스위치에서 스파이크 전압이 발생하며, 순환 전류(Circulating current)로 인한 도통 손실이 발생하는 단점을 지닌다. 위의 문제를 극복하는 회로로서 2차 측에 능동 클램프 회로를 적용하는 방법이 연구되었다. 하지만, 낮은 부하에서 클램프 커패시터의 전압이 상승하여, 2차 측 소자의 전압 스트레스가 증가하고, EMI 문제가 발생되는 단점을 지닌다. 본 논문에서는 위상천이 풀-브리지 컨버터의 2차 측에 능동 클램프 회로 및 동기 정류 스위치(Synchronous rectifier switch)를 적용하여, 클램프 커패시터의 전압 상승을 억제하는 해결 방안을 제시하며, 능동 클램프 회로의 스위치 제어 방법을 제안한다. 또한, 회로의 구조, 동작 원리 및 스위치 제어 방법을 설명하고, 모의 실험을 수행하여 타당성을 검증한다.

플라나변압기와 SiC 기반의 전기자동차용 3kW 고전력밀도 DC-DC 컨버터 개발 (Development of Planar Transformer and SiC Based 3 kW High Power Density DC-DC Converter for Electric Vehicles)

  • This study proposes a design method of high-power-density and high-efficiency low-voltage DC-DC converters using SiC MOSFET and the optimized planar transformer design procedure based on the figure-of-merit. The secondary rectifying circuit of the phase-shifted full-bridge converter is compared to achieve high power density and high efficiency, and the phase-shifted full bridge converter with a current-doubler rectifier is selected. The planar transformer is designed by the proposed optimized design procedure and verified by FEA simulation. To validate the proposed design method, experimental results from a 3 kW prototype are provided. The prototype achieved 95.28% maximum efficiency and a power density of 2.98 kW/L.

  • 본 논문에서는 출력 전압의 리플을 이용하여 지상 레그(lagging leg)의 스위치들의 영전류 스위칭(ZCS)을 수행하는 두 개의 트랜스포머를 가지는 위상천이 풀-브릿지 컨버터를 제안하다. 제안된 컨버터는 진상 레그(leading leg)의 스위치들은 영전압 스위칭(ZVS)을 수행하고, 지상 레그의 스위치들은 출력 전압-더블러(Voltage-Doubler)의 전압 리플차를 이용해 출력 다이오드의 전류 전환(commutation)이 빠르게 이루어지도록 하여서 중부하에는 영전류 스위칭을, 경부하에서는 영전압 스위칭을 가능하게 한다. 또한 출력측의 전압 리플차를 이용하기 때문의 기존의 1차측 부스트 캐패시터를 이용하는 컨버터에 비해 턴비를 이용하여 보다 빠른 전류 전환을 수행할 수 있는 장점을 가진다. 따라서 별도의 추가적인 소자없이 모든 스위치의 소프트스위칭이 가능하도록 하고, 지상 레그의 영전류 스위칭을 통해서 환류구간의 순환전류도 없애줌으로써 높은 효율을 얻을 수 있다. 모드 해석과 실험을 통하여 제안 컨버터의 성능을 검증한다.

두 개의 변압기를 이용한 전류불균형 개선 하프브리지 LLC 공진형 컨버터 (Current Unbalance Improved Half-bridge LLC Resonant Converter using the Two Transformers)

  • 본 논문은 상이한 누설인덕턴스를 가진 두 개의 변압기를 이용하여 전류불균형을 개선한 하프브리지 LLC 공진형 컨버터를 제안한다. 제안된 컨버터는 변압기의 누설인덕턴스와 자화인덕턴스 및 공진커패시턴스를 이용하여 공진하고, 넓은 부하영역을 가지며, 경부하에서도 영전압스위칭 조건을 만족한다. 직/병렬로 연결된 두 개의 변압기는 동작모드에 따라 변압기 또는 공진인덕턴스로써 교대로 동작하고, 변압기 2차측에는 누설인덕턴스를 이용하므로 별도의 출력 필터인덕턴스가 필요하지 않다. 또한 제안된 컨버터는 두 변압기의 상이한 누설인덕턴스와 하프브리지 스위치의 비대칭 펄스폭변조를 이용하여 2차측 정류다이오드의 전류불균형 문제를 개선한다. 본 논문에서는 제안된 컨버터의 동작원리를 모드별로 설명하고 프로토타입 컨버터의 설계 예를 제시한다. 제안된 컨버터의 우수한 성능을 입증하기 위하여 설계된 프로토타입의 회로파라미터로써 프로토타입 컨버터를 제작하고 실험하였다. 제안된 컨버터의 우수한 성능을 실험결과를 통하여 보인다.

고주파 공진현상을 이용한 CW CO2 레이저의 출력리플 최소화 (Minimization of a CW CO2 Laser Output Ripple by using High Frequency Resonance Phenomena)

  • In a conventional DC power supply used for CO2 laser, the circuit elements such as a rectifier bridge, a current-limiting resistor, a high voltage switch, energy storage capacitors ans a high-voltage isolation transformer using high turn ratio are necessary. Consequently, those supplies are expensive and require a large space. Thus, laser resonator and power supply should be optimally designed. In this paper, we propose a new power supply using high frequency resonance phenomena for CW(Continuous wave) CO2 laser (maximum output of 23W with discharge length of 450mm). It consists of a transformer including leakage inductance, magnetizing inductance and half-bridge converter, a three-stage Cockcroft-Walton and PFC(Power factor correction) circuit. The output ripple voltage can be controlled the minimum of 0.24% under the high frequency switching of 231kHz. Furthermore, the output efficiency was improved to 16.4% and the laser output stability of about 5.6% was obtained in this laser system.

A Novel Hybrid Converter with Wide Range of Soft-Switching and No Circulating Current for On-Board Chargers of Electric Vehicles

  • In this paper, a novel hybrid configuration combining a phase-shift full-bridge (PSFB) and a half-bridge resonant LLC converter is proposed for the On-Board Charger of Electric Vehicles (EVs). In the proposed converter, the PSFB converter shares the lagging-leg switches with half-bridge resonant converter to achieve the wide ZVS range for the switches and to improve the efficiency. The output voltage is modulated by the effective-duty-cycle of the PSFB converter. The proposed converter employs an active reset circuit composed of an active switch and a diode for the transformer which makes it possible to achieve zero circulating current and the soft switching characteristic of the primary switches and rectifier diodes regardless of the load, thereby making the converter highly efficient and eliminating the reverse recovery problem of the diodes. In addition an optimal power sharing strategy is proposed to meet the specification of the charger and to optimize the efficiency of the converter. The operation principle the proposed converter and design considerations for high efficiency are presented. A 6.6 kW prototype converter is fabricated and tested to evaluate its performance at different conditions. The peak efficiency achieved with the proposed converter is 97.7%.

Simple LED driver with Constant Current Control

  • In this paper, simple LED driver is proposed. The proposed driver has simple construction having series capacitor, bridge rectifier, and adjustable regulator IC. Constant current control is possible with the use of TL431Z. The proposed in this paper, current is greater than the rating of the load, the current controller device measures the increased current in the circuit, and turned-on so that the current will be shared. Thus current control device makes the circuit more reliable, longevity as well as increase the luminous efficacy of the LED light. The simulation and experimental results are presented to show the validity of the proposed circuits.
