In this study, we investigate the effect of the diffusion barrier and substrate temperature on the length of carbon nanotubes. For synthesizing vertically aligned carbon nanotubes, thermal chemical vapor deposition is used and a substrate with a catalytic layer and a buffer layer is prepared using an e-beam evaporator. The length of the carbon nanotubes synthesized on the catalytic layer/diffusion barrier on the silicon substrate is longer than that without a diffusion barrier because the diffusion barrier prevents generation of silicon carbide from the diffusion of carbon atoms into the silicon substrate. The deposition temperature of the catalyst and alumina are varied from room temperature to $150^{\circ}C$, $200^{\circ}C$, and $250^{\circ}C$. On increasing the substrate temperature on depositing the buffer layer on the silicon substrate, shorter carbon nanotubes are obtained owing to the increased bonding force between the buffer layer and silicon substrate. The reason why different lengths of carbon nanotubes are obtained is that the higher bonding force between the buffer layer and the substrate layer prevents uniformity of catalytic islands for synthesizing carbon nanotubes.

Bonding strength of reinforcing material has been recognized to be the most important factor which determines the strengthening effect and the durability of repair work. The properties of bonding layers affects the stress distribution at the end of the plate, therefore the behavior of bonding layer has to be investigated. In this study, the stress distribution at the end of the bonded plate has been tested and compared with Roberts' analysis. Shear stress and vertical normal stress at the end of strengtening plate are analysized and the effedts of bonding layer thickness, plate thickness and plate length on the bonding behavior are tested. The test results showed that thickness is one of the most important factor, which is the thinner the thickness, the smaller the maximum stress.

Fiber Bragg grating(FBG) sensor arrays can be used to monitor the mechanical behavior of the large composite structures such as wind turbine rotor blades and aircrafts. However, brittle FBG sensors, especially multiplexed FBG sensors are easily damaged when they are installed in the flexible structures. As a protection of brittle FBG sensors, epoxy packaged FBG sensors have been presented in this paper. Finite element analysis and experiments were performed to evaluate the effects of adhesives, packaging materials and the bonding layer thickness on the strain transmission. Two types of epoxy were used for packaging FBG sensors and the sensor probes were attached with various bonding layer thickness. It was observed that thin bonding layer with high elastic modulus ratio of the adhesive to packaging provided good strain transmission. However, the strain transmission was significantly decreased when elastic modulus of the adhesive was much lower than the packaged FBG sensor probe's one.

The feasibility of an efficient process proposed for Cu-Cu flip-chip bonding was evaluated by forming a porous Cu layer on Cu pillar and conducting thermo-compression sinter-bonding after the infiltration of a reducing agent. The porous Cu layers on Cu pillars were manufactured through a three-step process of Zn plating-heat treatment-Zn selective etching. The average thickness of the formed porous Cu layer was approximately 2.3 ㎛. The flip-chip bonding was accomplished after infiltrating reducing solvent into porous Cu layer and pre-heating, and the layers were finally conducted into sintered joints through thermo-compression. With reduction behavior of Cu oxides and suppression of additional oxidation by the solvent, the porous Cu layer densified to thickness of approximately 1.1 ㎛ during the thermo-compression, and the Cu-Cu flip-chip bonding was eventually completed. As a result, a shear strength of approximately 11.2 MPa could be achieved after the bonding for 5 min under a pressure of 10 MPa at 300 ℃ in air. Because that was a result of partial bonding by only about 50% of the pillars, it was anticipated that a shear strength of 20 MPa or more could easily be obtained if all the pillars were induced to bond through process optimization.
The purposed of this study was to investigate the effect of Gold bonding agent as intermediate layer between metal substrate and ceramic coating. Gold bonding agent used to seal off any surface porosity, to mask the greyish color of the metal, and to provide an underlying bright golden hue to the ceramic coverage. The adhesion between metal substrate and ceramic is related to diffusion of oxygen during ceramic firing. The oxide layer produced on non-precious alloy anti titanium was considered to have a potentially adverse effect on metal-ceramic bonding. The oxidation characteristics of titanium and non-precious alloys are the main problem. Every group were divided into test and control groups. Control groups are carried out process of degassing for product oxide layer. Au coating was applied on each Ni-Cr, Co-Cr alloys and cp-Ti specimens with difference surface condition or degassing. Specimens surfaces and cutting plane was characterized by SEM/EDS. Results suggested that Au coating is effective barriers to protect metal oxidation during ceramic firing.
In an evacuated tube solar collector, the stable sealing of the heat pipe to the glass tube is important for the collector to use for a long period of time. The sealing of copper tube to the glass is quite difficult because of the large differences in the physical and chemical properties of the two materials. In this study, therefore, a proper copper oxide layer was induced to improve the chemical bonding of the two materials, and the oxidation state of copper and the interface between copper and glass were examined by XRD, SEM and EDS. Its bonding strength was also measured. Cu$_2$O was formed when the bare copper was heat-treated under 600$^{\circ}C$, while CuO oxide layer was formed above that temperature. The bonding state of CuO to the copper was very poor. The borate treatment of the copper, however, extend the stable forming of Cu$_2$O layer to 800$^{\circ}C$. Borosilicate glass tube was sealed to a copper tube by Housekeeper method only when the sealing part was covered with Cu$_2$O layer. The bonding strength at the interface was measured 354.4N, its thermal shock resistance was acceptable.

The recent semiconductor packaging technology is evolving into a high-performance system-in-packaging (SIP) structure, and copper-to-copper bonding process becomes an important core technology to realize SIP. Copper-to-copper bonding process faces challenges such as copper oxidation and high temperature and high pressure process conditions. In this study, the bonding interface quality of low-temperature copper-to-copper bonding using a two-step plasma treatment was investigated through quantitative bonding strength measurements. Our two-step plasma treatment formed copper nitride layer on copper surface which enables low-temperature copper bonding. The bonding strength was evaluated by the four-point bending test method and the shear test method, and the average bonding shear strength was 30.40 MPa, showing that the copper-to-copper bonding process using a two-step plasma process had excellent bonding strength.

In this paper, the polymer adhesive bonding technology using wafer-level technology was investigated and warpage results were analyzed. Si and glass wafer was bonded after adhesive polymer layer and dam pattern for uniform state was patterned on glass wafer. In this study, warpage result decreased as the low of bonding temperature of Si wafer, bonding pressure and height of adhesive bonding layer. The availability of adhesive polymer bonding was confirmed by TC, HTC, Humidity soak test after dicing. The result is that defect has not found without reference to warpage.
In joining Alumina to copper plate by Mo-Mn metallizing process, the effects of the composition of metallizing paste on the bonding strength were investigated. The bonding strength increased with increasing Mn amount in the paste up to 20% but followed by the decrease with addition of Mn. The maximum bonding strength reached 50MPa at 20%Mn when heated to $1550^{\circ}C$ for 60minute. The addition of Si to the metallizing powder increased the bonding strength of the joint by enhancing the mechanical bonding between the Alumina and the metallizing layer due to the decrease of layer viscosity with the addition of $SiO_2$. It is thought that MnO reacted with $Al_2O_3$ to yield $MnAl_2O_4$ spinel, forming a joint.
The influence of post-roll bonding heat treatment conditions such as temperature and time on the variation in the diffusion layer, generated at the bonding interface and the subsequent mechanical properties of the roll-bonded Ti grade 1/Al1050/Ti grade 1 sheets, was systematically investigated. The intermetallic compound (IMC) phase generated by post heat treatment conditions adopted in this study was obviously indexed as monolithic TiAl3. Whereas the thickness of IMC layer generated by annealing at 500 ℃ was approximately 100 nm scale, it drastically increased above 1.5 ㎛ when annealed at 600 ℃. Uniaxial tensile and peel tests were then performed to compare mechanical properties. As a result, the bonding strength drastically increased above 7.9 N/mm by annealing at 600 ℃, which implies that proper annealing condition was a prerequisite, to improving interface bonding strength as well as global elongation properties for Ti/Al/Ti 3-ply sheet.
