  • The aim of this study was to investigate badminton smash and drop motion depends on player's level. To perform this study, ten male badminton players were participated: five skilled players (SG, age: $21.6{\pm}1.1$ yrs, height: $181.4{\pm}6.8$ cm, body mass: $72.4{\pm}5.7$ kg, career: $11.2{\pm}1.1$ yrs) and five less-skilled players (LSG, age: $21.2{\pm}1.1$ yrs, height: $180.2{\pm}5.6$ cm, body mass: $73.6{\pm}6.7$ kg, career: $10.6{\pm}0.9$ yrs). Three-dimensional motion analysis with 7 infrared cameras was performed with a sampling frequency as 200 Hz. Player's swing motion was divided into four events: starting motion (E1), backswing (E2), impact (E3), following (E4). For all upper joints, LSG showed greater angle differences between drop and smash motions than that of SG at E3 (p<.05). For all upper joints, greater angular velocities were found in SG than that of LSG. For both groups, significantly smaller angular velocities were found in drop motion than that of smash motion (p<.05). The greater sequential angular velocities (proximal to distal) were found in SG than LSG during smash motion. Based on our findings, performing the same motion between drop and smash would be related to enhance performance at badminton competition. It is expected that these results will be useful in developing a training program for enhancing performance of badminton athletes.

  • Hydrodynamic performance of a movable submerged breakwater was analyzed using energy dissipation model. Based on two-dimensional boundary element method the equation of motion including a viscous dissipation term proportional to velocity squared was solved by Newton-Raphson method. Energy dissipation coefficients as well as reflection and transmission coefficients of a submerged flat plate were calculated with various plate lengths and thickness. Both real and imaginary components of body displacement and forces were used to solve the motion of breakwater accurately. The effect of the magnitude of dissipation coefficient on the body displacement was evaluated. The results from the potential theory with no dissipation term were found to be an overestimate in resonance frequency.

  • In seismic prone areas it is possible to meet very different objects (equipment components, on shelf artefacts, simple architectural elements) that can be modelled as a rigid body rocking on a rigid foundation. The interest in their behaviour can have different reasons: seismological, in order to estimate the ground motion intensity, or more strictly mechanical, in order to limit the response severity and to avoid overturning. The behaviour of many rigid bodies subjected to twenty wide ranging acceleration recordings is studied here. The response of the blocks is described using kinematic and energy parameters. A condition under which a so called scale effect is tangible is highlighted. The capacity of the signals to produce overturning is compared to different ground motion parameters, and a good correlation with the Peak Ground Velocity is unveiled.

  • In this paper, the vortex-induced vibration of circular cylinders is studied using the immersed boundary method on the Cartesian mesh. The Reynolds numbers considered is from 100 to 200. Using the configuration of tendemly arranged multiple circular cylinders, the vortex shedding behind of the cylinders and their flow-induced motion are investigated. The staggered MAC grid arrangement, which is the typical grid system for the incompressible flow on the Cartesian meshes, is utilized. Pressure correction method is applied for solving the divergence-free incompressible velocity field. The body motion is described by immersed boundary technique that has advantages for moving object on the fixed computational domain. It is also discussed for the computational noise in hydrodynamic forces when body motion is represented by the immersed boundary method. The Predictor/Corrector method is used for simulating the nonlinear response of the elastically mounted cylinder excited by vortex-shedding.

  • Human muscle skeletal model was developed for biomechanical study. The human model was consists with 19 bone-skeleton and 122 muscles. Muscle number of upper limb, trunk and lower limb part are 28, 60, 34 respectively. Bone was modeled with 3D beam element and muscle was modeled with spar element. For upper limb muscle modelling, rectus abdominis, trapezius, deltoideus, biceps brachii, triceps brachii muscle and other main muscles were considered. Lower limb muscle was modeled with gastrocenemius, gluteus maximus, gluteus medius and related muscles. The biomechanical stress and strain analysis of human was conducted by proposed finite element analysis model under Kumdo head hitting motion. In this study structural analysis has been performed in order to investigate the human body impact by Kumdo head hitting motion. As the results, the analytical displacement, stress and strain of human body are presented.

  • This paper presents a motion capture based rehabilitation training system for a lower-limb paretic patient. The system evaluates the rehabilitation status of the patient by using the bend posture of the knees and the weight balance of the body. The posture of both legs is captured with a single camera using the planar mirror. The weight distribution is obtained by the Wii Balance Board. Self-occlusion problem in the tracking of the legs is resolved by using k-nearest neighbor based clustering with body symmetry and local-linearity of the posture data. To do this, we present data normalization and its symmetric property in the normalized vector space.

  • Biped locomotion is a popular research area in robotics due to the high adaptability of a walking robot in an unstructured environment. When attempting to automate the motion planning process for a biped walking robot, one of the main issues is assurance of dynamic stability of motion. This can be categorized into three general groups: body stability, body path stability, and gait stability. A zero moment point (ZMP), a point where the total forces and moments acting on the robot are zero, is usually employed as a basic component for dynamically stable motion. In this rarer, learning based neuro-fuzzy systems have been developed and applied to model ZMP trajectory of a biped walking robot. As a result, we can provide more improved insight into physical walking mechanisms.

  • This study investigated the feasibility of gait recognition using points on the body in three-dimensional (3D) space based on comparisons of four different feature vectors. To obtain the point trajectories on the body in 3D, gait motion data were captured from 10 participants using a 3D motion capture system, and four shoes with different heel heights were used to study the effects of heel height on gait recognition. Finally, the recognition rates were compared using four methods and different heel heights.

  • We present a method for tracking and interaction based on hybrid sensing for virtual environments. The proposed method is applied to motion tracking of whole areas, including the user's occlusion space, for a high-precision interaction. For real-time motion tracking surrounding a user, we estimate each joint position in the human body using a combination of a depth sensor and a wand-type physical user interface, which is necessary to convert gyroscope and acceleration values into positional data. Additionally, we construct virtual contents and evaluate the validity of results related to hybrid sensing-based whole-body tracking of human motion methods used to compensate for the occluded areas.

  • Many literatures, so far, have concentrated on approaches employing dependent coordinates set resulting in computational burden of constraint forces, which is needless in many cases. Some researchers developed methods to remove or calculate it efficiently. But systematic generation of the motion equation using independent coordinates set by Kane's equation is possible for any closed loop system. Independent velocity transformation method builds the smallest size of motion equation, but needs practically more complicated code implementation. In this study, dependent velocity matrix is systematically transformed into independent one using dependent-independent transformation matrix of each body group, and then motion equation free of constraint force is constructed. This method is compared with the other approach by counting the number of multiplications for car model with 15 d.o.f..
