  • In this paper, a novel algorithm is proposed to reduce the blocking artifacts of block-based coded images by using block classification and MLP. In the proposed algorithm, we classify the block into four classes based on a characteristic of DCT coefficients. And then, according to the class information of neighborhood block, adaptive neural network filter is performed in horizontal and vertical block boundary. That is, for smooth region, horizontal edge region, vertical edge region, and complex region, we use a different two-layer neural network filter to remove blocking artifacts. Experimental results show that the proposed algorithm gives better results than the conventional algorithms both subjectively and objectively.

  • This paper presents a new edge-protection algorithm and its very large scale integration (VLSI) architecture for block artifact reduction. Unlike previous approaches using block classification, our algorithm utilizes pixel classification to categorize each pixel into one of two classes, namely smooth region and edge region, which are described by the edge-protection maps. Based on these maps, a two-step adaptive filter which includes offset filtering and edge-preserving filtering is used to remove block artifacts. A pipelined VLSI architecture of the proposed deblocking algorithm for HD video processing is also presented in this paper. A memory-reduced architecture for a block buffer is used to optimize memory usage. The architecture of the proposed deblocking filter is verified on FPGA Cyclone II and implemented using the ANAM 0.25 ${\mu}m$ CMOS cell library. Our experimental results show that our proposed algorithm effectively reduces block artifacts while preserving the details. The PSNR performance of our algorithm using pixel classification is better than that of previous algorithms using block classification.

  • In this paper, we present a comparative performance analysis of several blocking artifact reduction algorithms. For the performance analysis, we propose a block boundary region classification algorithm which classifies each horizontal and vertical block boundary into four regions using brightness change near the block boundary. The PSNR performance of each algorithm is compared. The MSE according to each block boundary region is also compared. Experimental results show that the wavelet transform based blocking artifact reduction algorithms have better performance over the other methods.

  • A novel adaptive error concealment technique is proposed using a variable operating region algorithm based on MPEG-4 coding. In the algorithm, a missing block is classified as flat or edge block based on local information from the surrounding blocks extracted using a Sobel operation in a variable operating region (VOR). In this case, the VOR is determined adaptively according to the number of edge directions in the missing block. 1;sing the classification, the flat blocks are then concealed by the Proposed mean based weighted bilinear interpolation (MWBLI) method, and the edge blocks by the boundary directional interpolation (BDI) method. Consequently, the use of the Proposed VOR improves the subjective performance in a curved edge region, while the adaptive processing based on block classification improves the objective performance. Experimental results confirmed that the proposed algorithm produced better results than conventional algorithms, both subjectively and objectively.

  • Recently, Classification of characters in a 3D FPS game has emerged as a very significant issue. In this study, We propose the game character Classification method using Image Region Segmentation of the extracting meaningful object in a simple operation. In this method, first used a non-linear RGB color model and octree color quantization scheme. The input image represented a less than 20 quantized color and uses a small number of meaningful color histogram. And then, the image divided into small blocks, calculate the degree of similarity between the color histogram intersection and adjacent block in block units. Because, except for the block boundary according to the texture and to extract only the boundaries of the object block. Set a region by these boundary blocks as a game object and can be used for FPS game play. Through experiment, we obtain accuracy of more than 80% for Classification method using each feature. Thus, using this property, characters could be classified effectively and it draws the game more speed and strategic actions as a result.

  • In this paper, we proposed a lwo bit rate subband coding with adaptive vector quantization using the correlation between motion vector and block energy in subband. In this method, the difference between the input signal and the motion compensated interframe prediction signal is decomposed into several narrow bands using quadrature mirror filter (QMF) structure. The subband signals are then quantized by adaptive vector quantizers. In the codebook generating process, each classified region closer to the block value in the same region after the classification of region by the magnitude of motion vector and the variance values of subband block. Because codebook is genrated considering energy distribution of each region classified by motion vector and variance of subband block, this technique gives a very good visual quality at low bit rate coding.

  • In this paper, it is presented the efficient system for data recognition using the proposed binary code images. The proposed algorithm finds the position of binary image. Through the process of the block region classification, it is classified each block with the edge region using the value of gray level only. Each block region is divided horizontal and vertical edge region. If horizontal edge region blocks are classified over six blocks in any region, the proposed algorithm should search the vertical edge region in the start point of the horizontal edge region. If vertical edge region blocks were found over ten blocks in vertical region, the code image would found. Practical code region is acquired from the rate of the total edge region that is computed from the binary image that is processed with the average value. In case of the wrong rate, it is restarted the code search in the point after start point and the total process is followed. It has a short time than the before process time because it had classified block information. The block processing is faster thant the total process. The proposed system acquires the image from the digital camera and makes binary image from the acquired image. Finally, the proposed system extracts various characters from the binary image.

  • In this paper, the ciassification of Korean character type using multi neural network and fuzzy inference based on block partition is studied. For the effective classification of a consonant and a vowel, block partition method which devide the region of a consonant and a vowel for each type in the character is proposed. And the partitioned block can be changed according to the each type adaptively. For the improvement of classification rate, the multi neural network with a whole and a part neural network is consisted, and the character type by using fuzzy inference is decided. To verify the validity of the proposed method, computer simulation is accomplished, and from the classification rate $92.6\%$, the effectivity of the method is confirmed.

  • In this paper, we analyze the blocking artifact in block transform-coded images and propose a classification algorithm which classifies each horizontal and vertical block boundary into four regions of EQ, BA, EE, and AE according to the characteristics of the blocking artifact. We also compare the performance of several blocking artifact reduction methods which can reduce blocking artifact in block transform-coded images well. As the blocking artifact reduction methods, the LOT, Kim's wavelet transform-based method, Yang's POCS, Paek's POCS, and Jang's CM have been selected. Experimental results show that each horizontal and vertical block boundary classified by using the proposed classification algorithm yields different characteristics of discontinuities due to the blocking artifact according to the classified region. It is also shown that the blocking artifact reduction methods using wavelet transform yield better performance over the other methods.

  • In this paper we propose a new deinterlacing method with block classification and motion vector smoothing. The proposed method classifies a block, then depending on the region it belongs to, the motion estimation or line averaging is applied. To classify a block its variance is calculated. Then, for those blocks that belong to simple non-texture region the line averaging is done while motion estimation is applied to complex region. The motion vector field is smoothed using median filter what yields more accurate interpolation. In the experiments for the subjective evaluation, the proposed method bas shown satisfying results in terms of computation time consumption and peak signal-to-noise ratio. Due to the simplicity of the algorithm computation time was drastically decreased.
