  • Diglycidyl ether of bisphenol-A (DGEBA) was selected as a compatibilizer in Nylon 6 and bisphenol-A polycarbonate (PC) blends. SEM revealed a much finer morphology in the presence of DGEBA. The thermal properties, such as glass transition, melting point, crystallization temperature and rate, of the blends were examined using DSC. Overall, the introduction of DGEBA caused a strong dependence of these thermal properties on the composition due to compatibilization.

  • A subtracted cDNA library of a marine scuticociliate, Philasterides dicentrarchii, in response to 17β-estradiol exposure was constructed using suppression subtractive hybridization (SSH). As a result of SSH, 275 clones were isolated, and among them, only glutathione peroxidase (GPX) gene was isolated as an antioxidative enzyme responding to 17β-estradiol. The semi-quantitative reverse-transcriptase polymerase chain reaction (RT-PCR) analysis revealed that the transcription of GPX gene of P. dicentrarchii was clearly increased by exposure to 17β-estradiol. The GPX transcription was also clearly increased by exposure to xenoestrogens such as bisphenol A (BPA) and genistein.

  • The synthesis of bisphenol A-derived calixarenes has been studied by changing the protecting group of the phe-nol moiety and reaction conditions. Depending on the protecting groups, the corresponding calix[6,7,8]arenes are obtained in different rat ios. For example, whcn mono-p-tert-butyldimethylsilyl-protected bisphenol A is treated with paraformaldehyde and a catalytic amount ofaqueous KOH in refluxing p-xylene with a Dean-Stark water collector for 36 h, the corresponding calix[8]arene, calix[7]arene, and calix[6]arene are producedand separated in the ratio of about 3 : 2 : l and with overall 63% yield. The calixarenes are characterized by NMR spectroscopy and mass analysis. The X-raycrystal structure of the calix[8]arene shows a pleated loop confor-mation, stabilized by intramoIecular hydrogen bonding between the inner phenolic hydroxy groups.

  • Bisphenol A (BPA) is an endocrine-disrupting chemical that is capable of interfering with the normal function of the endocrine system in the body. Exposure to this chemical from BPA-containing materials and the environment is associated with deleterious health effects, including male reproductive abnormalities. A search of the literature demonstrated that BPA, as a toxicant, directly affects the cellular oxidative stress response machinery. Because of its hormone-like properties, it can also bind with specific receptors in target cells. Therefore, the tissue-specific effects of BPA mostly depend on its endocrine-disrupting capabilities and the expression of those particular receptors in target cells. Although studies have shown the possible mechanisms of BPA action in various cell types, a clear consensus has yet to be established. In this review, we summarize the mechanisms of BPA action in spermatozoa by compiling existing information in the literature.

  • In previous reports, bisphenol A (BPA) exposure affects reproductive function in Drosophila melanogaster females. To test the maternal effect of BPA exposure on fly reproductive function, F0 mothers were exposed to 0, 0.1, 1, and 10 mg/L of BPA and the fecundity in F1 and F2 generations were checked. In this experiment, 1 and 10 mg/L BPA significantly decreased the fecundity of F1 females. Moreover, 0.1 and 1 mg/L BPA substantially reduced egg production in the F2 generation. These results suggested that maternal exposure to BPA at enviromentally relavant concnetrations reduces reproductive function in Drosophila melanogaster females and that this effect is transgenerational.

  • Laccase catalyzes the oxidation and polymerization of aromatic compounds in the presence of molecular oxygen. Studies were conducted to characterize the use of polyethylene glycol (PEG) as an additive to keep up the enzymatic stability. The enzymatic activities highly remained and bisphenol A (BPA) was rapidly converted in the presence of 5 mg/l of PEC. These effects were accomplished with PEG of molecular weight 3,350. A linear relationship was found between the quantity of BPA to be converted $(10-120\;{\mu}M)$ and the optimum dose of PEC required for greater than $95\%$ conversion. This result suggests that it is the interaction between the PEG and the reaction products. In the optimum dose of PEG, the aeration of reaction mixture neither enhanced the conversion of BPA nor retarded the inactivation of the enzyme.

  • Bisphenol A (BPA) and 4-nonylphenol (4-NP) are a class of the broader group of compounds known as alkylphenol. These phenolic compounds are used in a number of commercial products and have been reported to be weakly estrogenic in previous studies. BPA, used as coating material for food cans and dental sealants, is relatively more estrogenic than other phenolic compounds.(omitted)

  • An analytical method for determining potential endocrine disruptors (bisphenol A, 2-chlorophenol, 2,4-dichlorophenol, 2,4,6-trichlorophenol, pentachlorophenol, p-t-butylphenol, p-pentylphenol, p-hexylphenol, p-t-octylphenol, p-heptylphenol, nonylphenol) by solid-phase extraction (SPE) and High Perfomance Liquid Chromatography(HPLC) equipped with fluorescence and variable wavelength detector has been developed. The SPE process for sample concentration was performed on a commercially available Oasis HLB cartridge packed with polymeric sorbents. The effect of elution solvent and elution volume on the recoveries of the analytes were investigated with HPLC. Average recovery of >85% was achieved with 60mg sorbents using 5mL of methanol as elution solvent. Phenolic compounds in canned drinks, beverages and water samples were surveyed by this proposed method.

  • Development of the fourth-instar larvae of Chironomus riparius has a sensitive to ecdysteroid hormones. The 2D/E gel analysis for polypeptide expression reflecting early-ecdysterone inducible gene has conducted the emerged female from larval phase exposure to bisphenol A (BPA). In the 2D/E gel 1108 protein spots were identified. The visualized protein spots allowed extraction of 17 protein spots differed more than 3 fold in BPA treated animals, which was approximately $1.6\%$ of the total protein spots. However, polypeptide expression reflecting early-ecdysterone inducible gene didn't change after treatments. In addition, detection for the damages or changes in mitogenome level was observed. The conserved cytochrome oxidase I in DNA level affected exposure to BPA $(1{\mu}gL^{-1})$ in this preliminary study.

  • The impact of dissolved wastewater constituents on the treatment of synthetic bisphenol A (BPA) solutions was investigated under a variety of reaction conditions. The laccase enzyme from Trametes vesicolor was used for the BPA treatment. The constituents studied included various inorganic salts, organic compounds and heavy metal ions. BPA degradation was inhibited by sulfate, thiosulfate, sulfide, nitrite, and cyanide ions at 25 mg/$\ell$, 100mg/$\ell$, 25 mg/$\ell$ 150 mg/$\ell$, and 2.5 mg/$\ell$, respectively. However, the inhibitive effects of sulfide and sulfite on BPA degradation were diminished by additional aeration to oxidize them. Formaldehyde significantly reduced the rate of BPA degradation at 1.0% among organic compounds studied. Among heavy metal ions tested, Fe(II) substantially suppressed BPA removal at 1 mM. MgCl$_2$ and CaCl$_2$ exhibited great inhibition of BPA degradation at 25mM.
