  • Based on the string, Euler beam, and Timoshenko beam theories, the transfer functions of axially translating web system to predict the lateral tracking are introduced in this paper. In addition, total transfer function of a multi-span web handling system is developed by the combination of the transfer functions of each single span. Experiments and computations are carried out and the results obtained for the Timoshenko beam model are compared with those of other models. The comparison indicates that the predictions from the Timoshenko and Euler beam models are quite different from that of the classical string model in both the gain and phase response. The results are expected to help in the development of high fidelity models of web tracking systems within a general computational framework.

  • To analyze the bending collapse behavior of an aluminum square tube beam under a bending load, a finite element simulation for the four-point bending test has been performed. Using an aluminum tube beam specimen partly inserted with two steel bars, the local buckling deformation near the center of the tube beam was induced. The maximum bending load and the bending collapse behavior obtained from the numerical simulation were in good agreement with experimental results. Using a combination of the four-point bending test and its finite element simulation, analysis of the local buckling and the accompanied bending collapse behavior of aluminum tube beam could be quantitative accomplished.

  • Recently, owing to the development of active array antenna techniques, various sector beams can be applied to the LTE systems with vertical sectorization. In this paper, we evaluate the system performance and suggest an optimum beam combination and parameters by using a system level simulator

  • Most of SEM is double condenser lens system. Two condenser lenses are required to provide the high demagnification ratios necessary for forming nanometer probes. The thin lens concept provides a highly useful basis for preliminary calculations in a broad range of situations. It is an easy way to understand the electron beam paths in column. Demagnification is easily calculated by this method. In this paper, we present design processes for condenser lens's demagnification by using thin lens combination model. Also, we verify the reliability of our design processes by comparing the modeled demagnification with these of corrected condenser lens.

  • To prepare the eco-friendly fire retardant wood, Japanese red pine (Pinus densiflora), Hemlock (Tsuga heterophylla), and Radiata pine (Pinus radiata) were treated with inorganic chemicals, such as sodium silicate, boric acid, ammonium phosphate, and ammonium borate. Different combination and concentration of those chemicals were impregnated by vacuum/pressure treatment methods. The electron-beam treatment was used to increase the chemical penetration into the wood. The fire performance of the fire retardant treated wood was investigated. The penetration of chemicals into the wood was enhanced after electron beam treatment. Ignition time of the treated wood was the most effectively retarded by sodium silicate, ammonium phosphate, and ammonium borate. The most effective chemical combination was found at 50% sodium silicate and 3% ammonium borate, which satisfied flammability criteria for a fire retardant material in the KS F ISO 5660-1 standards.

  • The lightweight superstructure is beneficial for bridges in remote areas and emergency erection. In such weight-sensitive applications, the combination of fiber-reinforced polymer (FRP) as a material and box-beams as a structural system have enormous scope. This combination offers various advantages, but as a thin-walled structure, their designs are often governed by buckling criteria. FRP box-beams lose their stability either by flange or web buckling mode. In this paper, the web buckling behavior of simply supported FRP box-beam subjected to transverse load has been studied by modeling full box-beam to consider the effect of real state of stress (stress variation in length direction) and boundary conditions (rotational restraint at web-flange junction). A parametric study by varying the sectional geometry and fiber orientation is carried out by using ANSYS software. The accuracy of the FE models was ensured by verifying them against the available results provided in the literature. With the help of developed database the influential parameters (i.e., αs, βw, δw and γ) affecting the web bucklings are identified. Design trends have been developed which will be helpful to the designers in the preliminary stage. Finally, the importance of governing parameters and design trends are demonstrated through pedestrian bridge design.

  • A damage detection algorithm based on neuro fuzzy hybrid system is presented in this study for location and severity predictions of cracks in beam-like structures. A combination of eigenfrequencies and rotation deviation curves are utilized as input to the soft computing technique. Both single and multiple damage cases are considered. Theoretical expressions leading to modal properties of damaged beam elements are provided. The beam formulation is based on Euler-Bernoulli theory. The cracked section of beam is simulated employing discrete spring model whose compliance is computed from stress intensity factors of fracture mechanics. A hybrid neuro fuzzy technique is utilized to solve the inverse problem of crack identification. Two different neuro fuzzy systems including grid partitioning (GP) and subtractive clustering (SC) are investigated for the highlighted problem. Several error metrics are utilized for evaluating the accuracy of the hybrid algorithms. The study is the first in terms of 1) using the two models of neuro fuzzy systems in crack detection and 2) considering multiple damages in beam elements employing the fused neuro fuzzy procedures. At the end of the study, the developed hybrid models are tested by utilizing the noise-contaminated data. Considering the robustness of the models, they can be employed as damage identification algorithms in health monitoring of beam-like structures.

  • The radiosurgery treatment is one time, non surgical approach to the treatment of patients with intracranial disorders whose conditions would be difficult or dangerous to treat with conventional sugical procedures. The LINAC based radiosurgery is based on the combination of multiple isocentric arc irradiation with small fields centered in the stereotactic target. The absorption of the beam in a tissue equivalent medium, such as water, as well as the uniformity, or profile, of the beam must be precisely documented. The beam characteristics and dosimetric measurememts of the 6MV X-ray beam from a ML-6M linear accelerator are examined. The percent depth dose (PDD) and beam profile (including flatness, symmetry and penumbra) is calibrated with the radiosurgery cone in water phantom. The cone is made of lead which size is from $10{\times}10mm{\phi}$ to $30{\times}30mm{\phi}$ All of these dosimetric measurements sufficiently characterized the beam to permit safe clinical use.
