This study presents a method for level ice-structure interaction analysis to estimate the fatigue damage of arctic structures by applying plate theory to the behavior of level ice. The boundary element method (BEM), which incurs a lower computational cost than the finite element method (FEM), was introduced to solve the plate bending problem. The BEM formulation was performed by applying the BEM to plate theory. Finally, to check the validity of the proposed method, the BEM results and FEM results obtained using the ABAQUS commercial software were compared. The response results of the BEM analysis agreed well with those of the FEM analysis. Based on the results of the analysis, the BEM approach is considered to be very powerful in level ice-structure interaction analysis for estimating level ice-induced fatigue damage. Further work is being conducted to perform level ice fracture analysis based on the stress field calculated using the boundary element method.

A directly coupled Boundary Element and Finite Element Model was applied to the dynamic analysis of a coupled acoustic silencer with vibratory wall. In this cupled BEM-FEM muffler model, the BEM model was used to discretize the acoustic cavity and the FEM model was used to discretize the vibratory wall structure. Then the BEM model was coupled with the FEM model. The results of the coupled BEM-FEM model for the dynamic analysis of the simple expansion type reactive muffler configurations with flexible walls were verified by comparing the predicted results to analytical solutions. In order to investigate the effects of the muffler's structural flexibility on its transmission loss(TL) characteristics, the results of the coupled BEM-FEM model in conjunction with the four-pole parameter theory were utilized. The muffler's TL characteristics using the BEM-FEM coupled model with flexible walls as compared to other muffler configurations was studied. Finally the muffler's TL values with respect to different wall's thickness are predicted and compared.

In this study, a module is developed for modeling and analyzing dynamic behavior of a wind turbine using RecurDyn, which is a commercial multi-body dynamics software developed by FunctionBay, Inc. The wind turbine consists of tower, nacelle, hub and blades. Tower and blades are regarded as flexible bodies for considering elastic effect using beam theory and spring force. In this paper, a constant speed wind was assumed and aerodynamic force is modeled using BEM theory. Dynamic analysis applying this aerodynamic force is carried out. To verify the validity of analysis results, these results are compared to those of GH-Bladed which is a commercial software for analyzing wind turbine system distributed by Garrad Hassan.

This paper presents the fast multipole boundary element method (FM-BEM) as a new BEM solution methodology that overcomes many disadvantages of conventional BEM. In conventional BEM, large-scale problems cannot be treated easily because the computation time increases rapidly with an increase in the number of boundary elements owing to the dense coefficient matrix. Analysis results are obtained to compare FM-BEM with conventional BEM in terms of computation time and accuracy for a simple two-dimensional steady-state heat conduction problem. It is confirmed that the FM-BEM solution methodology greatly enhances the computation speed while maintaining solution accuracy similar to that of conventional BEM. As a result, the theory and implementation algorithm of FM-BEM are discussed in this study.

A new coupling method of Element-Free Galerkin Method(EFGM) and Boundary Element Method(BEM) using the domain decomposition method is presented in this paper. This proposed methodology is that the problem domain is decomposed into sub-domains being modeled by the EFGM and BEM respectively and the respective EFGM and BEM domains share a partially overlapped region over an entire domain. Then, the each sub-domain is separately computed and the variables on common region are iteratively updated until converging. It is an important note that in the developed coupling method, there is no need to combine the coefficient matrices of EFGM and BEM sub-domains, in contrast with the other conventional coupling methods. In the first part of this paper, a theory of EFGM and BEM is summarized, and then a brief introduction of domain decomposition method is described. Then, a new coupling method is presented. Also, patch test and Some numerical examples are studied to verify stability, accuracy and efficiency of the proposed method, in which numerical performance of the method is compared with that of conventional method such as EFGM-BEM variational coupling method, EFGM and BEM.

The application of the 4-pole parameter method with 1 - D theory is acceptable for intake system analysis. However, the limitaion appears during the analysis of complicated intake system since this method is developed based on the plane wave thoery. For the intake system analysis, the usage of BEM(Boundary Element Method) is introduced describing its disadvantage. To combine benefits of both method. a hybrid method is introduced. This hybrid method consists of the 4-pole parameter with I-D theory and BEM. The developed method is applied to an automobile intake system analysis to obtain the transmission loss.
In this study, the effects of shear flows around a 2-dimensional airfoil, S809 on its aerodynamic characteristics were analyzed by CFD simulations. Various parameters including reference inflow velocity, shear rate, angle of attack, and cord length of the airfoil were examined. From the simulation results, several important characteristics were found. Shear rate in a flow makes some changes in the lift coefficient depending on its sign and magnitude but angle of attack does not have a distinguishable influence. Cord length and reference inflow also cause proportional and inversely proportional changes in lift coefficient, respectively. We adopted an analytic expression for the lift coefficient from the thin airfoil theory and proposed a modified form applicable to the traditional load analysis procedure based on the blade element momentum theory. Some preliminary results applied to an well known load simulation software, FAST, are presented.
The theory and numerical technique using boundary elements method (BEM) are given to solve 2-dimensional resistivity problems. Potential distributions from homogeneous resistivity model and layered model are calculated by using BEM for a point source of current injection. The potential distributions of BEM are compared with those of finite difference method (FDM) and finite elements method (FEM). Among the three numerical methods to solve 2-dimensional resistivity problem, it is proved that BEM is more efficient tool than FDM and FEM in consideration of computing storage and time as weU as the accuracy of solutions.

A coupled finite element method (FEM)-boundary element method (BEM) for analyzing the hydroelastic response of functionally graded carbon nanotube-reinforced composite (FG-CNTRC) floating plates under moving loads is firstly introduced in this article. For that aim, the plate displacement field is described utilizing a generalized shear deformation theory (GSDT)-based FEM, meanwhile the linear water-wave theory (LWWT)-relied BEM is employed for the fluid hydrodynamic modeling. Both computational domains of the plate and fluid are coincidentally discretized into 4-node Hermite elements. Accordingly, the C1-continuous plate element model can be simply captured owing to the inherent feature of third-order Hermite polynomials. In addition, this model is also completely free from shear correction factors, although the shear deformation effects are still taken into account. While the fluid BEM can easily handle the free surface with a lower computational effort due to its boundary integral performance. Material properties through the plate thickness follow four specific CNT distributions. Outcomes gained by the present FEM-BEM are compared with those of previously released papers including analytical solutions and experimental data to validate its reliability. In addition, the influences of CNT volume fraction, different CNT configurations, water depth, and load speed on the hydroelastic behavior of FG-CNTRC plates are also examined.

The hybrid numerical model is developed by combining BEM that can calculate the wave motion rapidly under the potential theory and CADMAS-SURF that solves Navier-Stokes equations for the free surface variation near the structure, In the hybrid model the calculation of wave motion in a wide field of wave reflection for deep water area is conducted by BEM but for shallow water area by CADMAS-SURF. Especially the hybrid model can calculate random wave motions for long term period more rapidly with almost similar accuracy than the calculation of wave motion which was carried out by CADMAS-SURF only. In this study the coupling model was applied to the calculation of the strong nonlinear wave motion such as wave runup and overtopping at the coastal structure on the mild-slope bottom and the results of numerical model were compared with the Toyosima's experiments of regular wave runup and Goda's design diagram of ramdom wave overtopping, respectively.
