  • In this paper, a 3-D computer-aided die design process was developed for automobile rear frame with drawing, trimming, flanging, cam-piercing and piercing for tool design. The tool design has been done using Pro/Engineer on a personal computer. It is composed of four stations. The goal of this research is to apply each of stations for the standard tool specification to each station.

  • In this paper presented the net forging technology of planetary gear after much experiment and analysis, technology of two forging processes after billet being one -time heated, and cold net forging was adopted to ensure the gear forming quality. In the process of die producing, electrical rod NC cutting technology was used .the test and application has proved the net forging gear has reached higher quality and met the requirement of design. The net forging gear technology had been put into production.

  • As automobile drivers' desires become ever diversified with the spreading phenomenon of 'characteristic automobile decorations', it is feared that the design quality may be deteriorated, while the safety be retarded in terms of performance and function. In Korea, the 'Dress-up tuning' becomes the source of the social criticism because of lack of relevant codes and professional tuning services, while automobile drivers are excessively having their automobiles overdressed ignoring the overall aesthetic aspect and functions. Under such a circumstance, this study was aimed at reviewing the practices and dress-up accessories by each automobile part of those foreign automobile makers and professional tuners who have introduced the concept of 'customizing' and developed dress-up accessories and various tuning parts only to satisfy their customers' tuning needs. It is anticipated that automobile styling would tend more to pursue a 'coordination' featuring ordinary consumers' individualistic senses, while customers' needs reflecting their life styles be more refined. Meanwhile, Korean automobile consumers have accommodated the product designs : presented within the producers' frameworks, but they are expected to pursue the design values varying according to changing structures of production, society and industry as well as the resultant design activities. In all, makers and designers are requested to be aware of such changing environment structures and thereby, explore other alternatives, or reflect seriously on the socio-cultural implications inherent in the products, namely on the production and consumption of people's favorites.

  • Although the numbers of pedestrian fatalities and injuries are steadily declining worldwide, pedestrian protection is still an important issue. Extensive researches have been carried out in the field of pedestrian protection in order to establish pedestrian safety regulations. The automobile hoods and bumpers, which pedestrians frequently run into during accidents, should be safely designed for pedestrians. Two analysis methods are utilized to design safe structures of the hood and the bumper. They are real experiment and computer simulation. In this research, a method is developed to simultaneously utilize the results from the experiment and the simulation. For design, orthogonal arrays are employed to combine the two methods. Based on this method, a hood and a bumper are designed to protect pedestrians.

  • As the demands for lightweight construction and precision grow, there is an increasing interest on hydroforming technology. This paper deals with designing automobile subframe for applying welded blanks hydroforming. In applying welded blanks hydroforming to automobile subframe, it is a serious problem that blanks wrinkle in deformed shape. To suppress wrinklings in blanks, the sections of the die where blanks wrinkled is modified. In addition to this, it is intended that the sum of thickness variation about wrinkling regions be minimized. For this purpose, parameters for influencing formability are selected and evaluated using orthogonal array. Among these parameters, parameters having a major effect on formability are selected again. Using CCD(central composite design) with the selected parameters, response surface is build up and optimal design is performed.

  • This paper suggests a design for an embedded system to control automobiles using mobile phones and applies the design on Arduino automobile models. Simulation of accidents that can happen in real life were conducted using Arduino automobile with attached sensors. The design includes algorithms for an automatic control that responds to events by detecting potential obstacles that maybe appear in the vehicle's surrounding and by measuring the distances between the obstacle and the vehicle. The feasibility of the suggested system is also reviewed.

Improving In-Vehicle Display and Control Design for Older Drivers

  • Recommendations for older driver-friendly automobile interior design have been determined by taking into account older people's physical and cognitive characteristics. Twenty three older people (aged from 54 to 78) and five younger people (from 20 to 29) performed several tasks in actual driving conditions, in which their reaction times and performance errors were recorded. Some design factors were found to be related to older drivers' visibility and controllability. Several design recommendations were proposed in terms of cluster color and font, display location, and HVAC control type. Proposed recommendations are expected to satisfy a wider range of older drivers as these will facilitate automobile interior designs which are fitter to older drivers' visual, cognitive, and manual capabilities.

  • Since Chrysler Motor Co. had experienced the digital development system in the beginning of 1990's, most of leading automobile companies are trying to apply a digital information system for their own business process reengineering based upon concurrent engineering system from product planning phase. This is called as virtual DMU(Digital Mock-Up) system instead of the traditional PMU(Physical Mock-Up) system. By using the virtual prototype, all of the design requirements and system specifications can be checked, changed and optimized more quickly and more efficiently. This paper consists of five chapters for the DMU information system. In the 1$^{st}$ chapter, the principle of digital design system is suggested by using four basic modules such as product design module, process design module, manufacturing system design module and central control module. The basic scheme of DMU is introduced with the benefits of application in the chapter 2. In the chapter 3, a digital design process of new car development is explained with the detailed DMU design and design review processes. In the chapter 4, the practical DMU manufacturing techniques and applications are introduced as CAD/CAM analyses, DPA(Digital Pre-Assembly)reviews for development, production, operation and maintenance phases, digital tolerance analyses and digital factory analyses for assembling line simulation, automated robot welding processes, production jig & fixtures and painting process simulation. Finally, the activities of digital design support; CAS-styling, CAE-engineering and CAT-testing are summarized for design optimization in the chapter 5. As today's automobile manufactures and related business organizations are struggling to compete in the global marketplace, they are concentrating on efficient use of DMU information system to reduce the new car development cost, to have shorten the delivery schedule and to improve product design quality. To meet the demand of those automobile industries on digital information systems, the CALS(Computer aided Acquisition and Logistics Support) and EC(Electronic Commerce)initiative has been focused as a dominant philosophy in defense & commercial industries, specially automobile industries.s.
