Au@ZnO core-shell nanoparticles (NPs) were prepared by a simple method followed by heat-treatment for gas sensor applications. The advantage of the core-shell morphology was investigated by comparing the gas sensing performances of Au@ZnO core-shell NPs with pure ZnO NPs and different wt% of Au-loaded ZnO NPs. The crystal structures, shapes, sizes, and morphologies of all sensing materials were characterized by XRD, TEM, and HAADF-STEM. Au@ZnO core-shell NPs were nearly spherical in shape and Au NPs were encapsulated in the center with a 40-45 nm ZnO shell outside. The gas sensing operating temperature for Au@ZnO core-shell NPs was $300^{\circ}C$, whereas it was $350^{\circ}C$ for pure ZnO NPs and Au-loaded ZnO NPs. The maximum response of Au@ZnO core-shell NPs to 1000 ppm CO at $300^{\circ}C$ was 77.3, which was three-fold higher than that of 2 wt% Au-loaded ZnO NPs. Electronic and chemical effects were the primary reasons for the improved sensitivity of Au@ZnO core-shell NPs. It was confirmed that Au@ZnO core-shell NPs had better sensitivity and stability than Au-loaded ZnO NPs.
We investigated the carbon monoxide (CO) gas-sensing properties of nanostructured Al-doped zinc oxide thin films deposited on self-assembled Au nanodots (ZnO/Au thin films). The Al-doped ZnO thin film was deposited onto the structure by rf sputtering, resulting in a gas-sensing element comprising a ZnO-based active layer with an embedded Pt/Ti electrode covered by the self-assembled Au nanodots. Prior to the growth of the active ZnO layer, the Au nanodots were formed via annealing a thin Au layer with a thickness of 2 nm at a moderate temperature of $500^{\circ}C$. It was found that the ZnO/Au nanostructured thin film gas sensors showed a high maximum sensitivity to CO gas at $250^{\circ}C$ and a low CO detection limit of 5 ppm in dry air. Furthermore, the ZnO/Au thin film CO gas sensors exhibited fast response and recovery behaviors. The observed excellent CO gas-sensing properties of the nanostructured ZnO/Au thin films can be ascribed to the Au nanodots, acting as both a nucleation layer for the formation of the ZnO nanostructure and a catalyst in the CO surface reaction. These results suggest that the ZnO thin films deposited on self-assembled Au nanodots are promising for practical high-performance CO gas sensors.
This paper reports the synthesis and characterization of ZnO:Ga nano-structures deposited on Au/SiNx/Si(001) by radio-frequency sputtering. The effect of the temperature on the microstructure of the as-grown ZnO:Ga thin films was examined. The growth mode of ZnO:Ga nano-structures can be explained by the profile coating, i.e. the ZnO nano-structures were formed with a morphological replica of Au seeds. Initially, the ZnO:Ga nano-structures were overgrown on top of Au nano-crystals. Small ZnO:Ga nano-dots were then nucleated on hexagonal ZnO:Ga discs.
ZnO nanorods were grown by hydrothermal method. Two kinds of seed layers, Au film and island seed layers were prepared to investigate the effect of seed layer on ZnO nanorods. The ZnO nanorod on Au island seed layer has more unifom diameter and higher density compared to that of ZnO nanorod on Au film seed layer. The ZnO nanorods on Au island seed layer were annealed at various temperatures ranging from 300 to $850^{\circ}C$. The pinholes at the surface of the ZnO nanorods is formed as the annealing temperature is increased. It is noted that the pyramid structure on the surface of ZnO nanorod is observed at $850^{\circ}C$. The intensity of ZnO (002) diffraction peak in X-ray diffraction pattern and intensity of near band edge emission (NBE) peak in photoluminescence (PL) are increased as the ZnO nanorods were annealed at the temperature of $300^{\circ}C$.
The surfaces of $TiO_2$ and ZnO nanoparticles have been modified by gold (Au) nanoparticles by a reduction method in solution. Their interfacial electronic structures and optical absorptions have been studied by depth-profiling X-ray photoelectron spectroscopy (XPS) and UV-vis absorption spectroscopy, respectively. Upon Au-modification, UV-vis absorption spectra reveal a broad surface plasmon peak at around 500 nm. For the as-prepared Au-modified $TiO_2$ and ZnO, the Au $4f_{7/2}$ XPS peaks exhibit at 83.7 and 83.9 eV, respectively. These are due to a charge transfer effect from the metal oxide support to the Au. For $TiO_2$, the larger binding energy shift from that (84.0 eV) of bulk Au could indicate that Au-modification site of $TiO_2$ is different from that of ZnO. On the basis of the XPS data with sputtering depth, we conclude that cationic (1+ and 3+) Au species, plausibly $Au(OH)_x$ (x = 1-3), commonly form mainly at the Au-$TiO_2$ and Au-ZnO interfaces. With $Ar^+$ ion sputtering, the oxidation state of Ti dramatically changes from 4+ to 3+ and 2+ while that (2+) of Zn shows no discernible change based on the binding energy position and the full-width at half maximum (FWHM).
${\gamma}$-ray radiolysis was used to functionalize networked ZnO nanowires with Au nanoparticles. The networked ZnO nanowires were prepared through a vapor phase selective growth method. The sensing performances of the Au-functionalized ZnO nanowires were investigated in terms of $NO_2$, CO and benzene gases. The Au-funtionalized ZnO nanowire sensors showed an applicable, reliable capability to detect the gases, indicating their potential in chemical gas sensors.
ZnO single layer films (100 nm thick) and Au intermediated ZnO films (ZnO/Au/ZnO; ZAZ) were deposited on the glass substrate by RF and DC magnetron sputtering at room temperature and then the influence of the Au interlayer on the electrical and optical properties of the films were investigated. ZnO thin films show the visible transmittance of 90.3 % and sheet resistance of 63.2×108 Ω/□. In ZAZ films, as Au interlayer thickness increased from 6 to 10 nm, the sheet resistance decreased from 58.3×108 to 48.6 Ω/□, and the visible transmittance decreased from 84.2 to 73.9 %. From the observed results, it can be concluded that the intermediate Au thin film enhances the opto-electrical performance of ZnO films without intentional substrate heating.
ZnO nanowlres (NWs) were fabricated using Au as catalyst for a method combining laser ablation cluster formation and vapor-liquid-solid (VLS) growth. The target used in synthesis was pure ZnO ceramics. Two different substrates were used; (0001)-oriented sapphires and Au-coated sapphires. The Au thin film was deposited by thermal evaporation and the thickness was about 50 ${\AA}$. ZnO NWs were only formed in case of that used catalyst metal. Field effect scanning electron microscopic (FESEM) investigation showed that the average diameter of ZnO NWs was about 70 nm and the typical lengths varied from $3{\sim}4{\mu}m$.
