  • Microwave diagnostics have been widely utilized to measure the important parameters of high temperature and high density plasmas. Reflectometry is known as a promising microwave diagnostic which has a number of merits to measure electron density profiles. In the KSTAR device, X-mode FM reflectometry is planned to measure the plasma density profiles. FM reflectometry is required to extract phase information on raw mixer IF signals, thereby obtaining time-of-flight of reflectometry signals. It is known that the data analysis method is crucial to determine the performance of FM reflectometry In fact, there are several analysis programs which have been utilized in various FM systems. Since each program was developed for a specific device, however, it is difficult to directly apply it to a different reactor like the KSTAR device. It is necessary, therefore, to develop a data analysis program for the KSTAR FM reflectometry. In this paper, complex digital demodulation (CDM) and wavelet transformation are examined in terms of the performance of density profile reconstruction. For the comparison of both methods, FM reflectometry signals are generated on the basis of assumed profiles and the interaction of the X-mode wave and the plasma. In order to see how well both methods work under various conditions, three types of profiles are assumed and noise effects are included. As a result, both methods work well under the condition of gentle density gradient and small noise level. As density gradient becomes steeper and noise level gets higher. the reconstruction performance of wavelet is better than that of CDM.

  • This paper reports the first known free vibration data for thin rectangular plates with V-notches. The classical Ritz method is employed with two sets of admissible functions assumed for the transverse vibratory displacements. These sets include (1) mathematically complete algebraic-trigonometric polynomials which guarantee convergence to exact frequencies as sufficient terms are retained, and (2) corner functions which account for the bending moment singularities at the sharp reentrant corner of the Y-notch. Extensive convergence studies summarized herein confirm that the corner functions substantially enhance the convergence and accuracy of nondirectional frequencies for rectangular plates having the V-notch. In this paper, accurate frequencies and normalized contours of vibratory transverse displacement are presented for various notched plates, so that the effect of corner stress singularities may be understood.

  • Dynamic stability of an axially accelerating beam stucture is investigated in this paper. The equations of motion of a fixed-free beam are derived using the hybrid deformation variable method and the assumed mode method. Unstable regions due to periodical acceleration are obtained by using the Floquet's theory. Stability diagrams are presented to illustrate the influence of the dimensionless acceleration, amplitude, and frequency. Also, buckling occurs when the acceleration exceeds a certain value. It is found that relatively targe unstable regions exist around the first bending natural frequency, twice the first bending natural frequency, and twice the second bending natural frequency. The validity of the stability diagram is confirmed by direct numerical integration of the equations of motion.

  • This paper presents the dynamic analysis of a cantilever beam undertaking impulsive force that undergoes rigid body motion. The transient response of the beam induced by the impulsive force and the rigid body motion is calculated based on hybrid deformation variable modeling method by applying the Rayleigh-Ritz assumed mode method. The stiffness variation effect caused by the rigid body motion is considered in this modeling. The effects of the impulsive force position and the angular velocity on the transient responses of the beam are investigated through numerical studies.

  • This paper reports the first-of-its-kind free vibration solutions for sectorial plates having re-entrant corners causing stress singularities when the circular edge is either clamped or simply supported. The Ritz method is employed with two sets of admissible functions assumed for the transverse vibratory displacements. Accurate frequencies and normalized contours of the transverse vibratory displacement are presented for the spectra of sector angles.

  • In this research, we investigated the burnup characteristics and the conversion of fertile $^{232}Th$ into fissile $^{233}U$ in the core of a Sodium-Cooled Fast Reactor (SFR). The SFR fuel assemblies were designed for burning $^{232}Th$ fuel (fuel pin 1) and $^{233}U$ fuel (fuel pin 2) and include mixed minor actinide compositions. Monte Carlo simulations were performed using Serpent Code1.1.19 to compare with CRAM (Chebyshev Rational Approximation Method) and TTA (Transmutation Trajectory Analysis) method in the burnup calculation mode. The total heating power generated in the system was assumed to be 2000 MWth. During the reactor operation period of 600 days, the effective multiplication factor (keff) was between 0.964 and 0.954 and peaking factor is 1.88867.

  • A modeling method for the modal analysis of a rotating cross-ply composite beam based on Timoshenko beam theory is presented. To analyze the composite beam exactly, the effects of shear deformation and rotary inertia are included. Linear differential equations of motion are derived using the assumed mode method. For the modeling, hybrid deformation variables are employed and approximated to derive the equations of motion. The effects of the dimensionless angular velocity and the slenderness ratio parameter on the variations of modal characteristics are investigated

  • Dynamic stability of a flying structure undertaking constnat and pulsating thrust force is investigated in this paper. The equations of motion of the structure, which is idealized as a free-free beam, are derived by using the hybrid variable method and the assumed mode method. The structural system includes a directional control unit to obtain the directional stability. Unstable regions due to periodically pulsating thrust forces are obtained by using the Floquet's theory. Stability diagrams are presented to illustrate the influence of the constant force, the location of gimbal, and the frequency of pulsating force. The validity of the diagrams are confirmed by direct numerical simulations of the dynamic system.

  • The paper investigates the influence of lateral restraint on the buckling behaviour of plate under non-uniform compression. The unloaded edges are assumed to be partially restrained against translation in the plane of the plate and the distributions of the resulting forces acting on the plate are shown. The stability analysis is done numerically using the Galerkin method and various strategies the economize the numerical implementation are presented. Results are obtained showing the variation of the buckling load, from free edge translation to fully restrained, with unloaded edges simply supported, clamped and partially restrained against rotation for various plate aspect ratios and stress gradient coefficients. An apparent decrease in the buckling load is observed due to these destabilizing forces acting in the plate and changes in the buckling modes are observed by increasing the intensity of the lateral restraint. A comparison is made between the budding loads predicted from various formulas in stability standards based on free edge translation and the values derived from the present investigation. A difference of about 34% in the predicted buckling load and different buckling mode were found.
