Icing is one of the most serious hazards for aircraft. The amount and rate of icing depend on a number of meteorogical and aerodynamic factors. Of primary importance are amount of liquid water content of droplets, their size, the temperature of aircraft surfaces, the collection efficiency, and the extent of supercooled droplets. In this study, in-flight icing analysis of low reynolds number high aspect ratio wing is carried out by using FENSAP-ICE. Each liquid water contents with altitude is obtained from FAR 25 Appendix-C. And the collectoin efficiency is calculated to check out the ice accretion position of wing with two angles of attack. The degradation of aerodynamic characteristics of aircraft are figured out by investigating the accretion of rime and glaze ice.
Ice accretion on the surface of aircraft in flight can adversely affect the safety of aircraft. In particular, it can cause degradation of critical aircraft performances such as maximum lift coefficient and total pressure recovery factor in engine air intake. In this study, computational prediction of ice accretion around a rotorcraft air intake is conducted in order to identify the impingement region with high droplet collection efficiency. Then the amount of ice accretion on the air intake, which is essential in determining the required power of ice protection system, is calculated. Finally, the effect of icing wind tunnel size is investigated in order to check the compatibility with the real in-flight test environment.
This study describes the Federal Aviation Administration(FAA) certification policy for approving the use of Type II, III, and IV deicing/anti-icing fluids on small category airplanes. These fluids can be characterized as non-Newtonian, pseudo-plastic fluids, also known as "thickened" fluids. Deicing fluids are used before takeoff to remove frost or ice contamination, while anti-icing fluids are used before takeoff to prevent frost or ice contamination from occurring for a period of time(referred to as "holdover time") after application. Thickened deicing/anti-icing fluids can affect airplane performance and handling characteristics and their residue may cause stiff or frozen flight controls. This study also describes an approval process that may be used by type certificate holders and applicants for a type certificate under parts 23 to support operational use of these fluids on their airplanes.
Atmospheric icing may have significant effects not only on safety of aircraft in air, but also on performance of wind turbine and power networks on ground. Thus, ice protection measure should be developed to protect these systems from icing hazards. A very efficient method is the electro-thermal de-icing based on a process by which ice accretion is melted and blown away through aerodynamic forces. In this computational study, a state-of-the-art icing code, FENSAP-ICE, was used for the analysis of electro thermal de-icing system. Computational results including detailed conjugate heat transfer analysis were then validated with experimental data. Further, the computational model was applied to the DU21 airfoil section of NREL 5MW wind turbine with calculated heater parameters.
The aerodynamic performance of aircraft in icing condition can deteriorate considerably by contamination of aerodynamic and propulsive systems due to icing accretions on aircraft surfaces. A computational analysis based on the Eulerian description was performed on an airfoil to investigate effects of ice accretions on airfoil aerodynamics. A water droplet with liquid water concentration ($0.00075kg/m^3$) and mean volume diameter ($20{\mu}m$) was considered and applied to various angles of attack to investigate the stall angle decrease and the drag increment.
