  • Recently, in our society, the use of smartphones has been widespread and changed our lives positively; however, the excessive use of smartphones has also produced many side effects. In particular, we can see that the reckless use of smartphones has constantly increased smartphone addiction propensities. University students, too, show smartphone addiction propensities more and more gradually; therefore this study intends to perform research related with smartphone addiction propensities with university students as the subjects. Since it is more and more important to perform leisure activities to prevent smartphone addiction and reduce addiction propensities, it can be said that the research on the correlation between leisure activities and smartphone addiction propensities is significant. The major findings of the research are as follows: First, among the smartphone addiction propensities, their tolerance and disturbance of adaptive function were relatively higher than other factors. Second, overall smartphone addiction affects the variables of gender (male), school year (freshmen), economic leisure constraints, time leisure constraints, and the adequacy of travel behavior, sports behavior, media use behavior, reading behavior, volunteer work and religious behavior. The adequacy of the media use behavior variables showed the greatest impact.

  • This study analyzed 817 articles published in Korean professional journals over the past three years, from 2020 to 2022, using text mining techniques to identify trends in addiction research in Korea and explore development directions. The analysis results are as follows. First, as a result of the analysis of the top keywords, online addiction studies such as smartphones, games, Internet, gambling, and relationship addiction were prominent as the top keywords. Second, as a result of TF-IDF analysis, many addiction studies related to behavioral addiction such as smartphones, games, the Internet, and work addiction have been conducted over the past three years, and in particular, there are many studies on addiction problems such as smartphones, games, and the Internet that have not yet been clinically diagnosed as addiction problems. This is the same as the result of word frequency analysis, and it can be interpreted that recent studies have been remarkably conducted on more diverse addiction problems. Third, the 2-gram analysis shows that words that mainly correspond to behavioral addiction, such as smartphones, games, and the Internet, appear side by side with the keyword addiction, and among them, words paired with smartphones are mentioned a lot in research papers and are being studied. Fourth, as a result of the CONCOR analysis, there were five clusters: a study on universal addiction issues such as alcohol use disorders and the Internet, a study of recovery on drug and gambling addiction, a study on mobile devices and media addiction, a study on the latest trends related to behavioral addiction, and other addiction issues. Finally, based on the results of this study, a direction for future addiction-related research was suggested.

  • This research was convergence study conducted to understand the effect that parent-son/daughter communications have on the addiction to smartphones, with stress level, self-control, and self-efficacy as the mediator. The subjects were college students located in J province and K province, and 232 questionnaires were used as the data for analysis. As a result, addiction to smartphones had negative correlations with parent-son/daughter communication, self-control, and self-efficacy and had positive correlations with stress level. In addition, parent-son/daughter communication influenced the degree of addiction to smartphones, with stress level, self-control, and self-efficacy as the mediator. Therefore, in order to reduce college students' addiction to smartphones, programs should be developed specifically and systematically to increase their communication with their parents, and it is necessary to draw up measures to reduce students' stress levels and increase their self-control and self-efficacy levels.

Methods: Data were collected using a questionnaire to measure perceived smartphone addiction and physical and mental health of 314 female students attending a college located in D city from April 9 to May, 31, 2019. The collected data were analyzed using descriptive statistics, 𝑥2 test, t-test and stepwise multiple regression with SPSS 18. Results: The respondents were classified into two groups, the perceived smartphone addiction group (29.3%) and the perceived smartphone non-addiction group (70.7%). Perceived smartphone addiction was significantly different according to daily smartphone usage time (p<.001), smartphone usage fee (p=.005), most satisfying thing about using smartphones (p=.006) and importance of smartphones in daily life (p<.001). The perceived smartphone addiction group had more physical health problems (p=.001) and more mental health problems (p<.001). The factors affecting physical health were perceived smartphone addiction and importance of smartphones in daily life, with 62% of explanatory power (F=10.15, p<.001). As for mental health, the affecting factors were also perceived smartphone addiction and importance of smartphones in daily life, with 87% of explanatory power (F=14.52, p<.001). • Purpose: The purpose of this study was to explore the relationships among preschoolers' smartphone addiction tendency, problem behaviors, and parenting efficacy of the mothers of these children. Methods: A cross-sectional, descriptive study design was used with self-administered questionnaires. A total of 83 mothers of preschoolers aged 4-6 years and their preschool teachers from a kindergarten participated in the study. Results: Mean daily time spent by the preschoolers on smartphones was about 45 minutes/day. About 40% spent more than 60 minutes/day on smartphones. The majority (69.8%) used smartphones without adult supervision. The level of smartphone addiction tendency among the preschoolers was $1.52{\pm}0.45$ on a 4-point scale. Preschoolers whose mothers use smartphones for more than 60 minutes/day showed a higher level of smartphone addiction tendency than preschoolers whose mothers use smartphones for less than 60 minutes/day. Also smartphone addiction tendency among preschoolers had a positive correlation with hyperactive-distractible behavior (r=.228, p=.038) and a negative correlation with parenting efficacy of their mothers (r=-.299, p=.006). Conclusion: Our findings demonstrated that preschooler's smartphone addiction tendency is significantly associated with hyperactive-distractible behaviors of the children and low parenting efficacy among their mothers. Therefore well-designed care plans for these populations should be provided to decrease smartphone addiction tendency.

  • Objective: The purpose of this study was to examine the mediating effects of smartphone addiction tendency on the relationship between depression of mothers with 3 to 5 year-old children and rejecting-neglecting parenting style. Methods: Three hundred and twenty-eight mothers answered questionnaires on three research variables. To analyze the data, Pearson correlation analyses and regression analyses were conducted. Results: First, mothers' depression, smartphone addiction tendency and rejecting-neglecting parenting style showed positive correlations, respectively. Specifically, mothers with a high level of depression were more addicted to smartphones and exhibited more rejecting-neglecting style of parenting. Also, mothers who were more obsessed with smartphones showed more rejecting-neglecting parenting style. Second, this study found partial mediating effects of smartphone addiction tendency on the relationship between depression and rejecting-neglecting parenting style. Conclusion/Implications: This study confirmed that mothers' depression and smartphone overuse had an influence on their negative parenting behaviors. The results of this study address the need of various interventions for mothers to decrease their depression and smartphone overuse.
