  • Korean maximum residue limits (MRLs) for pesticides have been established based on scientific data of good agricultural practice, acceptable daily intake (ADI), food intake, average body weight and others. MRLs for pesticides are generally set under the principle that theoretical maximum daily intake (TMDI) are always below ADI. As results, 104 MRLs are going to be newly established for 24 pesticides and 102 MRLs are going to be added for 63 pesticides that have regulation already, Among new pesticides, ethaboxam and flupyrazofos are effective components that are first developed in Korea. In case of dithiocarbamates, MRLs are classified by 3 groups such as dimethyldithiocarbamates, ethylenebis (dithiocarbamate)s and propineb.

  • Mean concentration of 2 artificial sweeteners, sodium saccharin and acesulfame K, in food samples and their daily intakes were estimated. Among 755 food samples, 57 contained these artificial sweeteners. Contribution rate to total estimated daily intake (%) of artificial sweeteners in food categories were high in danmooji for sodium saccharin and ice cream for acesulfame K. Total estimated daily intakes $({\Sigma}EDI)$ for different age groups were high in 30-49 year-old group for sodium saccharin and 13-19 year-old group for acesulfame K. Total estimated daily intakes $({\Sigma}EDI)$ of men and women were 5.91 and 4.89 mg/man/day, respectively. Total estimated daily intakes $({\Sigma}EDI)$ based on mean body weight of 55 kg were 4.13 and 1.25 mg/man/day for sodium saccharin and acesulfame K, respectively. These values ranged within 0.2-1.5% of acceptable daily intake (ADI) evaluated by FAO/WHO and 1.2-13.5% of theoretical maximum daily intake (TMDI), and, therefore, judged to be safe.

  • In this study, monitoring of food additives as an artificial sweeteners on favorite dairy products of children, which are deal at supermarket, was performed. We analyzed aspartame, acesulfame-K, sodium saccharin, and sucralose from total 206 dairy products which are fermented milk, ice-creams and others. Aspartame was detected from 3 cases of fermented milk. Sucralose was detected from 10 cases of processed milk and 2 cases of fermented milk. The detected concentration was followed [average (minimum~maximum)]: aspartame 34.6 mg/kg (2.9~97.9 mg/kg), sucralose 29.8 mg/kg (5.5~67.7 mg/kg). The level of intakes of detected sweeteners were evaluated by comparisons with the acceptable daily intake (ADI) data established by the joint FAO/WHO expert committee on food additives. The estimated daily intake (EDI) of aspartame and sucralose per day were 0.37 mg/day, 0.20~0.32 mg/day. The intake levels were 0.05~0.8%, which were all within safe levels.

  • This study has been carried out to estimate the amount of the daily intake on artificial sweetener(aspartame and sodium saccharin) and antioxidants(propyl gallate, BHA, BHT and TBHQ) in food consumed by Korean. The mean daily intake for each food item were obtained from the report of National Nutrition Survey carried by Ministry of Health and Welfare in 1997. The contents of artificial sweetener and antioxidants have been analyzed by HPLC. Aspartame was detected on 22 of 239 samples in the range of $33.4{\sim}3308.0\;mg/kg$, sodium saccharin was detected on 6 of 115 samples in the range of $8.3{\sim}41.8\;mg/kg$. BHA(204.9 mg/kg) was detected in Chewing gum only. Total estimated daily intake(EDI) of each additives per capita per day are as follows; 2.336 mg/person/day for aspartame, 0.259 mg/person/day for sodium saccharin and 0.002 mg/person/day for BHT. These values were less than 1% of FAO/WHO's acceptable daily intake(ADI).

  • According to a survey conducted recently, consumers are feeling the anxiety to food, it can be seen that the extent to which feels uneasy about pesticide residues among them in particular is high. Foods that are commercially available, is set (pesticide residue standards, acceptable daily intake daily (ADI), non-toxic amount) residual acceptable standards of pesticides so as not to give the damage to human health. However, in the case of consumers of general knowledge on Standards for pesticide residues is not sufficient, anxiety over food safety still exists. Therefore, in this study, as can be easily understood and accurate information to consumers a general basic knowledge on the safety of food is insufficient is related to food safety, was utilizing the graphic display of a one-dimensional you are trying to provide information providing method. As a result, in the display method is utilized to provide the information on food existing for, from the form of the information by utilizing the graphs and characters, using a graphical display showing the criteria for pesticide residues in one dimension it was found that the display shows how to readily appreciate the most accurate and safety standards regarding pesticide residues.

  • This study was conducted to monitor the residual pesticides on red pepper powder produced in five regions, which are the major producers of red pepper in Korea, such as Ham-pyeong, An-dong, Yeong-yang, Yeong-gwang, and Cheongyang from 2015 to 2016. Residual pesticides were detected on all samples. Among the 286 pesticides tested, 58 pesticides were detected, with the most frequently detected being chlorfenapyr (93.7%). Twelve types of pesticides (chlorfenapyr, cypermethrin, chlorpyrifos, pyraclostrobin, cyhalothrin, tebuconazole, bifenthrin, deltamethrin, fenvalerate, lufenuron, azoxystrobin, and indoxacarb) were detected in all regions, and 14 types of pesticides were used only in certain regions. An analysis of the residual pesticides showed that none of the pesticides detected exceeded the MRL (Maximum Residue Limits). The Positive List System (PLS) requirements were applied to eight pesticides that had no set MRLs. 0.01 mg/kg (PLS requirements) was exceeded in 12 cases. A comparison of the estimated daily intake (EDI) of pesticides with the acceptable daily intake (ADI) to access their risk revealed %ADI values of 0.001-0.756. Carbofuran showed the highest (0.756%), but most pesticides were below 1%. The results show that residual pesticides in red pepper powder are at safe levels.

  • Pyrimisulfan is a herbicide. In order to register this new pesticide, the series of toxicity data on animal testing were reviewed to evaluate its hazards to consumers and also to determine its acceptable daily intake. Pyrimisulfan was excreted mostly by feces. It has low acute oral toxicity while it has no dermal, ocular irritation and skin sensitization (As the result of subchronic and chronic toxicity and carcinogenicity showed changes of hematology and liver.). Two-generation reproduction toxicity, genotoxicity, carcinogenicity and prenatal development toxicity were not proven. Therefore, the ADI for Pyrimisulfan is 0.1 mg/kg/ bw/day, based on the NOAEL of 10 mg/kg/ bw/day of 90-days repeated dose oral toxicity study in dogs while applying an uncertainty factor of 100.
