A Study on the Management Improvement of an Academic Library Using Customer Relationship Management (CRM 기법을 이용한 대학도서관 경영개선에 관한 연구)

  • The user satisfaction and needs of an academic library were caught through a questionnaire survey in this study. The aim of this study is to draw up the CRM based plan for meeting user needs on the study. The users' demographic information, library resources & their use, homepage, services, and facilities/environment of the library were categorized in the questionnaire and analyzed for this study. The major conclusions of this study are: (1) The library resources use was the highest, and its facilities/environment was the lowest in the user satisfaction study. It also revealed that there are much necessities for the quick acquisition and dissemination of the requested material to the library users, and for the inter-library loan (ILL) services among campuses for the subscription books in the library resources use study, too; (2) There are a lot of necessities for the improvement of OPAC retrieval and the subscription books system, and menu rearrangement in the library homepage; (3) There are a lot of necessities for the plans of more frequent library event, more detailed event guidance, and more reinforcement of public relations such as SMS, push services of SDI etc. in the library user services; and (4) There are a lot of necessities for the improved policies to the complaints of library users such as the lack of common study place and lockers, air conditioning and heating problem, complaints about facilities management of restroom (lack of toilet paper), library accessibility on campus, unauthorized user management etc. in the facilities/environment of the library.

  • This study aims to perform an evaluation of the book services and academic information services provided by the major search portals of Korea and the United States. This study also investigates the relationships between search portals and academic libraries. The results of this study can be implemented for the development and improvement of the portals' book and academic information services. Users can refer to the results of this study in choosing services from search portals. The results of this study can also provide implications for the differentiation of academic library services.

  • The purpose of this study is to analyze information needs and information usage of academic information users. This study aims to identify more specific information needs through an analysis of the gap between undergraduate and graduate users. Interviews with 20 users of K and S University were conducted for this study. As the result of this study, we found that the information needs from undergraduate and graduate users are different. The undergraduate users were less satisfied (30%) with information results than the graduate (90%) users and types of their needed information were more diversified. Additionally, the study suggests that information services for undergraduate users should be developed more seriously because their information satisfaction was considerably lower even though they actively utilize information.

  • The books and circulation-related data in the Library Automation System(LAS) of C-academic library were collected and analyzed, and also the method which may be applied to the Customer Relationship Management (CRM) based on the results was suggested in this paper. Collected data were 269,387 bibliographic data of books, 12,281 patron data, and 39,269 circulation records. User identity, circulation frequencies, total number of circulated books, and publication year as relation factor from the analyzed data of circulation records were extracted. They were also analyzed, and verified by correlation coefficient.

  • Marketing techniques developed for private organizations are being widely used in libraries. The primary focus in marketing has shifted to maximizing user perceived value from the perspective of library users. This paper examines library as an industry as a way to establish the basis for library's overall value, applies the R-I-R model and its taxonomy of value in using library and information services, and proposes market orientation approach to systematically plan and coordinate academic library marketing activities.

The User Satisfaction Analyses for the Multimedia Room of Academic Libraries in the Northeast Seoul (대학도서관 멀티미디어실에 대한 이용자 만족도 분석 - 서울동북부사립대학교도서관을 중심으로 -)

  • While a number of studies have been conducted on the multimedia rooms in academic libraries, they have limitations both in the research scope and in the data analysis methods. The principal limitations are: (1) Lack of investigation on the variation in user satisfaction by users' major areas and utilization behaviors; (2) Insufficiency of examining the variation in user satisfaction with diverse library areas; (3) Lack of consideration of service providers' opinions. Accordingly, this study aimed to examine the follows: (1) investigating how users' major fields and utilization behaviors affect user satisfaction; (2) determining the relationships between the area satisfaction factors and satisfaction in general; and (3) discovering what to improve, as indicated by users and service providers. On the basis of the results, the suggestions relate to the improvements of the followings: (1) the existing system; (2) equipments and facilities; (3) resources; (4) user education; and (5) administrative and legal support.

Current Status and Future Perspectives of Academic Library Online Services in the Pandemic Era (팬데믹 시대 대학도서관 온라인 정보서비스의 현황과 과제)

  • After the pandemic, universities are shifting to distance learning, and the information use environment of libraries is rapidly changing. Therefore, there is a need for academic libraries to provide learning and research support services to users in response to these changes. This study analyzed the following contents, focusing on the contents of online services of academic libraries in order to understand the services provided by academic libraries after the pandemic, 1) the current status of online information services provided by 60 academic libraries at domestic and foreign and 2) the experience and requirements for using the online information services of academic library were investigated. As a result of the study, academic libraries at domestic and foreign responded to the untact environment by providing various online information services and users showed high experience and requirements for the electronic resource service and online user education service of academic libraries after the outbreak of the pandemic. Based on the analysis of the current status of online information services provided by domestic and foreign academic libraries after the outbreak of the pandemic, as well as the experiences and requirements of university students, several strategies were proposed to improve the quality of university education and library online information services and to plan services that respond to user needs.

  • 본 연구에서는 인터넷을 활용하여 도서관의 이용자가 편리한 웹 환경에서 스스로 이용자교육을 실행할 수 있는 개별학습 시스템을 개발한 후, 이용자 만족도 조사를 통하여 그 효율성을 평가하였다. 이 시스템은 도서관 자료검색시스템의 이용절차 뿐 아니라 정보검색이나 자료조직에 대해 이용자가 더욱 폭 넓게 이해할 수 있도록 구성하였다.

A Study on the Distance University Library Service Quality Factors and User Perception (원격대학 도서관 서비스품질 요인 및 이용자 인식 연구)

  • This study aims to grasp what factors affect users' recognition level and expectation level for library service, being offered at the library of Korea National Open University. Also, this study seeks to conduct a survey and analyze whether users' recognition level by library service dimensions has actually influenced the intention and the satisfaction with using the library. For this, it carried out the theoretical approach, which considers domestic and foreign documents on evaluation of quality of library service, and the empirical approach of questionnaire research and analysis. A research model was designed on the basis of LibQUAL+model to achieve the objective of this research. And the group-based difference was confirmed by carrying out verification on research hypothesis. As a result of analysis, the users' current recognition level by library service dimensions of Korea National Open University was indicated to have influence on the whole satisfaction with library and the continuous use intention. The whole satisfaction was indicated to have an effect on continuous use intention. Also, to enhance users' satisfaction level according to the behavioral characteristics of using library, the core elements for improving the library service of Korea National Open University were cited and these include improving the facility of library, implementing smart digital library system for offering remotely academic information, and securing diversity and currency of academic information sources such as printing materials and electronic materials.

  • Emerging ubiquitous computing and mobile communication urges changes in academic libraries' information services. This study is to explore the future scholarly information services in academic libraries, by adopting a future research method, scenarios. It identifies the key forces in the scholarly information flows, scans the range of alternatives, and describe the possible behaviors of the three groups of main actors: publishers, academic libraries, and users.
