  • Fer the purpose of improving ductility of $Al_3$Ti intermetallic compound has potential to industrial application, we investigated formation behavior of cubic Ll$_2$ structure and effect of Mn addition. Nanocrystalline cubic Ll$_2$Al$_3$Ti intermetallic compound, has 10nm size of grain, was fabricated by mechanical alloying for 20hr at the composition of Al-8Mn-25Ti. Ternary cubic Ll$_2$Al$_3$Ti, added Mn, did not showed phase transformation from Ll$_2$ to D0$_{23}$ or D0$_{22}$ unlike binary cubic Ll$_2$Al$_3$Ti and maintained Ll$_2$ structure.

  • Alumina hydrates were prepared by the neutralization of AlCl3.6H2O solution with NH3 gas diluted with N2 gas. The values of pH in reaction solution influenced the formation of alumina hydrates minerals. Amorphous alumina hydrates, for example, were formed at ${\gamma}$-Al2O3longrightarrow$\delta$-Al2O3longrightarrow$\theta$-Al2O3longrightarrow$\alpha$-Al2O3. (2) Bayeritelongrightarrowamorphouslongrightarrow${\gamma}$-Al2O3longrightarrow$\delta$-Al2O3longrightarrowη-Al2O3longrightarrow$\theta$-Al2O3longrightarrow$\alpha$-Al2O3. On the other hand, the shape of alumina hydrates whichw ere prepared by the reacton of Al2(SO4)3.16H2O solution and NH3 gas was spherical, the progress of its phase transformation with increasing temperature was amorphouslongrightarrow${\gamma}$-Al2O3longrightarrow$\alpha$Al2O3 in sequence.

  • Boehmite (AlOOH) powder was synthesized using waste aluminium etching solution. In waste solution, precipitated phase was gibbsite ($Al(OH)_3$), and boehmite (AlOOH) phase was obtained at pH of 7 and 8 controlled by addition of acid. Boehmite powder was obtained by washing process to remove the Na ion in precipitated solution. Mean particle size of obtained powder was 40 nm. Boehmite phase transformed to ${\alpha}-Al_2O_3$ phase via ${\gamma}-Al_2O_3$, ${\delta}-Al_2O_3$, and ${\Theta}-Al_2O_3$.

High-Temperature Oxidation Behavior of Fe-22%Cr-5.8%Al Alloy (Fe-22%Cr-5.8%Al 합금의 고온 산화 거동)

  • This study investigated the high temperature oxidation behavior of Fe-22%Cr-5.8%Al alloy and the oxidation kinetics of the alloy were discussed. Bulk samples were prepared by VAM (vacuum arc melting) and hot forging. High temperature oxidation testes were isothermally conducted up to 100 hours in 79%$N_2$+21%$O_2$ environment at three different temperatures ($900^{\circ}C$, $1000^{\circ}C$, $1100^{\circ}C$). The weight gain was measured after oxidation according to oxidation time (2, 4, 6, 8, 10, 15, 20, 25, 30, 60, 80, 100 hours). The weight gain significantly increased with increasing oxidation temperature. As the temperature increased, the oxidized samples showed sequential formation of $Al_2O_3$, Cr-rich oxide, Fe-rich oxide. The activation energy of high temperature oxidation was obtained as 306.63 KJ/mol. $Al_2O_3$ were developed on the surface in the early stage of oxidation, representing protective role of oxidation. However, Fe-based and Cr-based oxides leaded to breakaway of oxide layer, thus resulted in the significant increase of additional oxidation.

Extraction of Material Parameters and Design of Schottky Diode UV Detectors Using a Transfer Matrix Method (전달 행렬 방법을 이용한 Schottky 다이오드 자외선 광검출기의 물질특성 추출과 설계)

  • We have extracted the material parameters such as absorption coefficients of GaN, $Al_{0.2}Ga_{0.8}N$, and Schottky contact metal Ni of Schottky Diode UV-A and B detectors using a transfer matrix method (TMM). The ratios of the absorbed light to the total incident amount at the depletion regions of GaN and $Al_{0.2}Ga_{0.8}N$ have been calculated in order to obtain the spectral responsivity. Absorption coefficients of the materials have been obtained by fitting the simulated data with measured data. The depletion layer thickness has been obtanied by capacitance-voltage measurement. The results pave the way for the optimum design of UV Schottky detectors. Since the absorption coefficient of the Ni electrode is very high, its thickness is a major factor that determines the responsivity. It is possible to attain improved UV detectors using thinnest possible Ni electrodes and wide depletion regions of GaN and $Al_{0.2}Ga_{0.8}N$.

Oxidation Behavior of Al-25Ti-8Mn Intermetallic Compound Fabricated by Mechanical Alloying and Spark Plasma Sintering (기계적 합금화법과 방전 플라즈마 소결법으로 제조된 Al-25Ti-8Mn 금속간 화합물의 산화 거동)

  • The oxidation behavior and the thermal stability of nanocrystalline Al-25Ti-8Mn intermetallic compound were investigated. $Al_3Ti$ intermetallic compound, which has a potential for high temperature structural material, was fabricated by mechanical alloying(MA) with $8at.\%$ Mn to enhance the thermal stability and ductility. And Al-25Ti-8Mn intermetallic compound was sintered by spark plasma sintering(SPS) at $700^{\circ}C$. After sintering process, cubic $Ll_2$ structure was maintained without phase transformation and the grain size was about 50nm. To investigate the oxidation behavior of the specimens, thermal gravimetric analysis(TGA) was performed at 700, 800, 900, and $1000^{\circ}C$ for 24 h in $O_2$. As the temperature increased from $700^{\circ}C\;to\;900^{\circ}C$ the weight gain of specimens increased. However at $1000^{\circ}C$, unlike the oxidation behavior of $700^{\circ}C\;to\;900^{\circ}C$, the weight gain of specimen decreased drastically and the transition from linear rate region to parabolic rate region occurred rapidly due to the dense $\alpha-Al_2O_3$.

T-P Removal Efficiency According to Coagulant Dosage and Operating Cost Analysis (응집제 투입에 따른 인 제거 효율 및 운영비용 분석)

  • T-P removal efficiency was analyzed according to the metal to initial T-P ratio (mole basis) with respect to the samples from different WWTPs having various initial T-P and SS conditions. Also, operating costs were calculated based on the injected coagulant amount and the amount of sludge production. Most experiments were conducted by the standard jar-test protocol. Molar ratio of coagulant dose was varied considerably according to the initial SS concentration range in secondary clarifier effluent samples which had above 0.5 mg/L of initial T-P. Based on 90% T-P removal efficiency, results were: At the initial SS range of below 10 mg/L, Alum (8%) = 11 mol Al/mol P needed and PAC (17%) = 9.6 mol Al/mol P needed; At the initial SS range of above 10 mg/L, Alum (8%) = 3.9 mol Al/mol P needed and PAC (17%) = 3.2 mol Al/mol P needed.

Surface Modification of a Li[Ni0.8Co0.15Al0.05]O2 Cathode using Li2SiO3 Solid Electrolyte

  • $Li_2SiO_3$ was used as a coating material to improve the electrochemical performance of $Li[Ni_{0.8}Co_{0.15}Al_{0.05}]O_2$. $Li_2SiO_3$ is not only a stable oxide but also an ionic conductor and can, therefore, facilitate the movement of lithium ions at the cathode/electrolyte interface. The surface of the $Li_2SiO_3$-coated $Li[Ni_{0.8}Co_{0.15}Al_{0.05}]O_2$ was covered with island-type $Li_2SiO_3$ particles, and the coating process did not affect the structural integrity of the $Li[Ni_{0.8}Co_{0.15}Al_{0.05}]O_2$ powder. The $Li_2SiO_3$ coating improved the discharge capacity and rate capability; moreover, the $Li_2SiO_3$-coated electrodes showed reduced impedance values. The surface of the lithium-ion battery cathode is typically attacked by the HF-containing electrolyte, which forms an undesired surface layer that hinders the movement of lithium ions and electrons. However, the $Li_2SiO_3$ coating layer can prevent the undesired side reactions between the cathode surface and the electrolyte, thus enhancing the rate capability and discharge capacity. The thermal stability of $Li[Ni_{0.8}Co_{0.15}Al_{0.05}]O_2$ was also improved by the $Li_2SiO_3$ coating.

  • The microstructural evolution and crystalline phases of this infiltration of Ti+Al liquids in TiC, SiC, TiC+C, and SiC+C preforms have been investigated. As the Ti and Al mixing ratio in Ti+Al infiltrated liquid changes, the newly formed reaction products, which were reacted from the Ti+Al liquid with preforms, consisted of three major phases as Ti3AlC, Al2Ti4C2 or Al4C3. The TiC grain shape was changed to spheroid, when Ti3AlC was formed. In case of Al2Ti4C2 formation, the platelet grain was formed from the original TiC grain. When Al4C3 was formed, nodular or intergranular fine-grained Al4C3 was formed around the TiC grain, while the original TiC grain shape was not changed.

  • The aluminum nitride was synthesized by the self-propagating high-temperature synthesis(SHS). The synthe-sis was used aluminum powder mixed with AlN powder as reactant and the control factors affected to synthesis were considered compact density pressure of reaction gas AlN diluent content and aluminum powder size. The SHS reaction conducted with a reactant containing 50% AlN diluent under 0.8MPa nitrogen gas pressure yielded a complete conversion of aluminum powder to AlN powders. The size and purity of AlN produced were found to be comparable with that of AlN produced by the carbothermal nitrogen method.
