  • The Weibull variate is commonly used as a lifetime distribution in reliability applications. Estimation of parameters is revisited in the two-parameter Weibull distribution. The method of product spacings, the method of quantile estimates and the method of least squares are applied to this distribution. A comparative study between a simple minded estimate, the maximum likelihood estimate, the product spacings estimate, the quantile estimate, the least squares estimate, and the adjusted least squares estimate is presented.

  • A numerical study on the use of the momentum interpolation method for flows with a large body force is presented. The inherent problems of the momentum interpolation method are discussed first. The origins of problems of the momentum interpolation methods are the validity of linear assumptions employed for the evaluation of the cell-face velocities, the enforcement of mass conservation for the cell-centered velocities and the specification of pressure and pressure correction at the boundary. Numerical experiments are performed for a typical flow involving a large body force. The numerical results are compared with those by the staggered grid method. The fact that the momentum interpolation method may result in physically unrealistic solutions is demonstrated. Numerical experiments changing the numerical grid have shown that a simple way of removing the physically unrealistic solution is a proper grid refinement where there is a large pressure gradient. An effective way of specifying the pressure and pressure correction at the boundary by a local mass conservation near the boundary is proposed, and it is shown that this method can effectively remove the inherent problem of the specification of pressure and pressure correction at the boundary when one uses the momentum interpolation method.

  • Immersed boundary method(IBM) is a numerical scheme proposed to simulate flow field around complex objectives using simple Cartesian grid system. In the previous studies, the IBM has mostly been implemented to fractional step method based Navier-Stokes solvers. In this study, we implement the IBM to an incompressible Navier-Stokes solver which uses SIMPLE algorithm. The weight coefficients of the bi-linear and quadratic interpolation equations were formulated by using only geometric information of boundary to reconstruct velocities near IB. Flow around 2D circular cylinder at Re=40 and 100 was solved by using these formulations. It was found that the pressure buildup was not observed even when the bi-linear interpolation was adopted. The use of quadratic interpolation made the predicted aerodynamic forces in good agreement with those of previous studies. For an analysis of moving boundary, we smulated an oscillating circular cylinder with Re=100 and KC(Keulegan-Carpenter) number of 5. The predicted flow fields were compared with experimental data and they also showed good agreements.

  • This paper proposes a new method for delay time calculation in RLC interconnects. This method is simple, but precise. The proposed method can calculate delay time of RLC interconnects by simple numerical formula calculation without complex moment calculation using reduced model in RLC interconnects. The results using the proposed method for RLC circuits show that average relative error is within $10\%$ in comparison with HSPICE simulation results.

  • The objective of this study was to conduct a radiation shielding analysis for the facility equipped with radiation generator. The analysis was carried out in two aspects. First, from the aspect of the effect caused by primary and leakage radiation. Second, effect of scattered radiation was evaluated by applying a simple calculation method based on a scattering rate concept since effect of scattered radiation is significantly important at maze entrance of the radiation facility. The calculated results obtained using the simple method were compared to the results calculated using Geant4 code and the measured values. The results calculated by the suggested method indicate that slight error exists in a radiation shielding analysis done at the maze entrance comparing to other two results, while the results evaluated at the outside of the maze entrance door are relatively consistent with other values.

  • On the dynamic behavior of a simple beam the influences of the velocities and distance of two moving masses have been studied by numerical method. The instant amplitude of a simple beam is calculated and analyzed for each position of the moving masses represented by the time functions. As increasing the velocties of two moving masses on the simple beam, the amplitude of the transverse vibration of the simple beam is decreased and the frequency of the transverse vibration of the simple beam is increased. As the distance between two moving masses increase, the transverse displacement of the simple beam is decrease. The simple beam is very stable in second mode at $\bar{a}=0.5$ and in third mode at $\bar{a}=0.3$.

  • Efficient memory management is one of the most crucial requirement of lava virtual machine. In Java, memory is allocated everytime when a new instance of class is created or when a method is called. The allocated memory is freed when the instance is no longer used, or when the called method is returned. In this paper we have examined the memory management scheme applied to the simpleRTJ lava virtual machine. The simpleRTJ has such a distinguished characteristic in its memory management scheme that the size of all instances are forced to be the same and the size of stack frames of all methods be the same, respectively. We present in this paper the scheme thoroughly and analyze its anticipated performance qualitatively.

  • This paper proposes a simple numerical method to simulate ductile failure behaviors. The method is based on finite element analysis with a simple damage theory. To validate the proposed method, simulated results are compared with experimental data. Despite its simplicity, the proposed method well predicts experimental results systematic analyses are also performed to investigate the effect of the element size.

  • Balanced half sample method is a simple variance estimation method for complex sampling designs. Since it is simple and flexible, it has been widely used in large scale sample surveys. However, the usual BHS method overestimate the true variance in without replacement sampling and two-stage cluster sampling. Focusing on this point , we proposed an unbiased BHS variance estimator in a stratified two-stage cluster sampling and then described an implementation method of the proposed estimator. Finally, partially BHS design is explained as a tool of reducing the number of replications of the proposed estimator.
