  • The purpose of this study is to analyze the differences between the cognitive load of mathematics textbooks based on storytelling and traditional mathematics textbooks that are presented to students. In order to verify this, we have selected two 4th grade classes in elementary school that were identified as a homogeneous group through prior testing, and thus were separated into experimental group and comparative group. Then, without the teacher's lessons, the experimental group learned from mathematics textbooks based on storytelling and the comparative group learned from traditional mathematics textbooks. Afterwards, the two groups' cognitive load was measured through a questionnaire, and the following results were obtained: In the 'mental effort' and 'self evaluation' categories, the students that learned from the mathematics textbook based on storytelling showed higher scores than the students that learned from the traditional mathematics textbook. also there was statistically significant difference in some items. However, no statistically significant difference was found in the remaining categories 'task difficulty', 'self evaluation', and 'material design'.

  • The purpose of this study was to analysis how the elements of character are reflected in the 3rd and 4th grade elementary mathematics textbooks based on the 2009 revised curriculum. This study focused on the elements of character in the 3rd and 4th grade mathematics textbooks. The researchers analyzed the elements of character in the students' mathematics textbooks and teacher's guide books. In particular, they analyzed how those elements of character are reflected in those books. Findings of this study are as follows. First of all, the elements of character were founded in the most of units on the 3rd and 4th grade mathematics textbooks, but they were biased to the specific elements of character. Second, the resources using related with character vary in the textbooks. As methods of character education, connections of elements of character with mathematical concepts, broader view of the world, or problem solving are appeared. From the results of the research, we suggest the followings. We need to set the teacher's roles in character education. Mathematics textbooks should include various elements of character for effective character education. In addition to development of quality materials for character education in mathematics education, teacher education programs should include character education in mathematics education.

  • The addition and subtraction relationship and the multiplication and division relationship are explicitly dealt with in second and third grade mathematics textbooks. However, these relationships are not discussed anymore in the problem situations and activities in the 4th, 5th, and 6th grade mathematics textbooks. In this study, we investigate the calculation principles of subtraction and division in the elementary school mathematics textbooks. Based on our investigation, we justify the addition and subtraction relationship and the multiplication and division relationship at the level of children's understanding so that we discuss some problem situations and activities where the relationships can be applied to subtraction and division. In addition, we suggest educational implications that can be obtained from children's applying the relationships and the properties of equations to subtraction and division.

  • The purpose of this study was to analyze the sentences related with mathematical modeling in the third and fourth grade mathematics textbooks in accordance with changing of Korean mathematics curricula. In the preliminary analysis, the researchers used the criteria that Kim(2010) had analyzed Mathematics in Context[MiC], and analyzed South Korean textbooks from the perspective of mathematical modeling. The researchers revised them for the analysis criteria among South Korean elementary mathematics textbooks and employed them as the analysis framework of the present study. From the mathematical modeling perspective, the study reached the following conclusions in accordance with the change of textbooks from the 7th curriculum to the 2009 revised curriculum. The contexts of real-world situations presented in the textbooks are increased in all areas except Probability and Statistics areas, the methods of expression of mathematical model are diversified in all areas except Patterns area, and the communication types are also diversified and frequencies increased in all areas except Patterns area. Based on this research, several suggestions were made for the development of future textbooks.

  • Mathematics textbooks are substitutive showing real characters of didactic transposition in pseudo-contextualization and pseudo-personalization. This study analyzed statistical graphs in elementary school mathematics textbooks according to the first to the 7th curriculum in Korea. It focused on the didactic principles used in those methods through those view of Didactic Transposition Theory. The features of the elementary school mathematics textbooks in Korea are investigated and described ethnomethodologically according to each curriculum periods in dividing bar graph, line graph, pictograph, graph of ratio, histogram. The teaching sequences and methods of the statistical graphs, order and methods of sub-learning activities, teaming data, matter of the learning activity indicator were summarized. Usually, the teaching sequences, excepting the graphs of ratio, statistical graphs are introduced in the second semester of each grade. The graph of ratio is introduced in the first semester of 6th grade. As a result of analysing sub-Loaming activities, using them increased from the first to the 7th curriculum and its form was fixed constructive and stable at the 4th curriculum textbooks. As a result of analysing the teaming data, the data of the social aspects are used more frequently and the data of the individual preferences trended more gradually. As a result of analysing the matter of the teaming activity indicators, concept-explanation question style were used more frequently. Statement-practice style and consideration style trended gradually. Concluding remarks are: First, the didactic transposition of the elementary school mathematics textbooks developed systematically according to the first to the 7th curriculum; Second, mathematics textbooks gradually introduced the positive learning style of activity and the learners' spontaneousness; Third, more concrete practice activities and reflective activities were variously introduced considering the level and interest of each elementary student.

  • The purpose of this study is to analyze multiplication facts(1st and 0th multiplication) in elementary mathematics. In the 2015 revised curriculum, students learn multiplication and multiplication facts in the 2nd grade. Many teachers experience difficulties in organizing the multiplication problem situation in multiplication facts(1st and 0th multiplication). This study aims to consider the causes of these difficulties and devise teaching methods. The method of this study is a comparative and analytic method. In order to compare textbooks, we select the Korean elementary mathematics textbooks(1st curriculum~2015 revised curriculum) and the six foreign elementary mathematics textbooks(Taiwan, Japan, Finland, Unites States, Hongkong, Singapore). As a result, the multiplication problem situation and the multiplication model assume the same bundle and bundle model. Also, we must consider the teaching timing of multiplication facts(1st and 0th multiplication) and the use of commutative law. In this study, we proposed a multiplication teaching scheme in consideration of the multiplication problem situation and teaching model, teaching period and commutative law etc.. to teach multiplication facts(1st and 0th multiplication) in elementary mathematics.

  • The mathematical processes are strongly emphasized in 2009 revised national curriculum for mathematics and are expected to be complemented and extended in 2015 revised one. This study aims to investigate how much the processes are being implemented in mathematics classroom and select some elements which need complementation. To do this, we selected the mathematical practices of CCSSM as a reference, because it plays the corresponding role in the United States to the mathematical processes in Korea. We recognized common elements and different elements between the two and analyzed. Considering those, we searched the possibility of newer mathematical process and analyzed the 4th grade mathematics textbooks in relation to questions for mathematical practices. We provided the results of analyses and several suggestions for revising mathematics curriculum and textbooks.

  • This study compared and analyzed the van Hiele levels of geometry contents in middle school mathematics textbooks and those of students' thinking. As the mathematics curriculum was revised recently, the amount of contents in the geometry area were reduced, but the van Hiele level did not change much, and the gap between the van Hiele level of geometric contents presented in the textbooks and the level of students' geometric thinking still remained unchaged. The van Hiele levels of the geometric contents in the textbooks were distributed in the levels of 1, 2, 3 in the first grade, and 2, 3, 4 in the second and third grade. In the case of the first grade, 69% of the students were less than or equal to level 2, and 73.7% and 47.6% of the students in the second and third grades were less than or equal to level 3, respectively. Especially, in the case of the second and third grade, the ratio of the 4th level of the contents presented in the textbook is higher than the problem, which can cause difficulties for the students.
