  • In a ubiquitous computing environment, people more and more become to use multiple displays. When using such ubiquitous displays, it is needed for users to seamlessly interact with the displays for a certain content. In this paper, we propose a seamless interface that allows users to see photos across multiple displays. Many photos can be displayed on a screen at the same time because they are shown in 3D space. And a group of photos is represented using a cube metaphor. A user can manipulate photos directly using a touch screen and also see the photos continuously using PDAs when the user moves to other places. In addition, the user can interact with the photos seamlessly using another display. The developed system was designed to interact according to user's movements and not to draw user's attention too much as a kind of ambient display. Using RFID and ultrasonic sensors it recognizes a user and the user's proximity to the display, and then automatically determines the screen image and the user interface accordingly.

  • In order to render global illumination realistically, we need to accurately compute the direct and indirect illumination that represents the light information incoming through complex light paths. In this process, the indirect illumination at given point is greatly affected by surrounding geometries. Harmonic mean distance is a mathematical tool which is often used as a metric indicating the distance from a surface point to its visible objects in 3D space, and plays a key role in such advanced global illumination algorithms as irradiance/radiance caching and ambient occlusion. In this paper, we analyze the accuracy of harmonic mean distance estimated against various environments in the final gathering and photon mapping methods. Based on the experimental results, we discuss our experiences and future directions that may help develop an effective harmonic mean distance computation method in the future.

  • This paper presents a composite control strategy for the active suppression of vibration due to the unknown disturbances, such as external excitation, harmonic effects and control spillover, as well as high-frequency accelerometer measurement noise in the all-clamped stiffened plate. The proposed composite control action based on the modal approach, consists of two contributions including feedback part and feedforward part. The feedback part is the well-known PID controller, which is widely used to increase the structure damping and improve its dynamic performance close to the resonance frequencies. In order to get better performance for vibration suppression, the weight matrixes is optimized by chaos sequence. Then an improved disturbance observer (IDOB) as the feedforward compensation part is developed to enhance the vibration suppression performance of PID under various disturbances and uncertainties. The proposed IDOB can simultaneously estimate the various disturbances dynamically as well as measurement noise acting on the system and suppress them by feedforward compensation design. A rigorous analysis is also given to show why the IDOB can effectively suppress the unknown disturbances and measurement noise. In order to verify the proposed composite control algorithm (IDOB-PID), the dSPACE real-time simulation platform is used and an experimental platform for the all-clamped stiffened plate active vibration control system is set up. The experimental results demonstrate the effectiveness, practicality and strong anti-disturbances ability of the proposed control strategy.

  • PURPOSE. To compare the fracture resistance and the mode of failure of endodontically treated teeth restored with different post-core systems. MATERIALS AND METHODS. Root canal treatment was performed on 40 maxillary incisors and the samples were divided into four groups of 10 each. For three experimental groups post space preparation was done and teeth were restored with cast post-core (Group B), stainless steel post with composite core (Group C) and glass fiber post with composite core using adhesive resin cement (Group D). Control group (A) samples were selected with intact coronal structure. All the samples were prepared for ideal abutment preparation. All the samples were subjected to a load of 0.5 mm/min at $130^{circ}$.until fracture occurred using the universal testing machine. The fracture resistance was measured and the data were analyzed statistically. The fracture above the embedded resin was considered to be favorable and the fracture below the level was considered as unfavorable. The statistical analysis of fracture resistance between different groups was carried out with t-test. For the mode of failure the statistical analysis was carried out by Kruskal-Wallis test and Chi-Square test. RESULTS. For experimental group Vs control group the fracture resistance values showed significant differences (P<.05). For the mode of failure the chi-square value is 16.1610, which means highly significant (P=.0009) statistically. CONCLUSION. Endodontically treated teeth without post core system showed the least fracture resistance demonstrating the need to reinforce the tooth. Stainless steel post with composite core showed the highest fracture resistance among all the experimental groups. Teeth restored with the Glass fiber post showed the most favorable fractures making them more amenable to the re-treatment.

  • In this paper, we describe a robot endeffector recognition system based on a Modular Neural Networks (MNN). The proposed recognition system can be used for vision system which track a given object using a sequence of images from a camera unit. The main objective to achieve with the designed MNN is to precisely recognize the given robot endeffector and to minimize the processing time. Since the robot endeffector can be viewed in many different shapes in 3- D space, a MNN structure, which contains a set of feedforwared neural networks, can be more attractive in recognizing the given object. Each single neural network learns the endeffector with a cluster of training patterns. The training MNN patterns for a neural network share the similar characteristics so that they can be easily trained. The trained UM is les s sensitive to noise and it shows the better performance in recognizing the endeffector. The recognition rate of MNN is enhanced by 14% over the single neural network. A vision system with the MNN can precisely recognize the endeffector and place it at the center of a display for a remote operator.

  • The continually growing demand for underground space in dense urban cities is also driving the demand for underground highways. Building the underground highway tunnel, however, can involve complex design and construction considerations, particularly when there exists divergence or convergence in the tunnel. In this study, interaction between two asymmetric noncircular tunnels-that is, a larger main tunnel and a smaller tunnel diverging from the main tunnel, was investigated by examining the distributions of the principal stresses and the strength/stress ratio for varying geometric conditions between the two tunnels depending on diverging conditions using both numerical analysis and scale model test. The results of numerical analysis indicated that for the $0^{\circ}$, $30^{\circ}$, $60^{\circ}$ diverging directions, the major principal stress showed an initial gradual decrease and then a little steeper increase with the increased distance from the left main tunnel, except for $90^{\circ}$ where a continuous drop occurred, whereas the minor principal stress exhibited an opposite trend with the major principal stresses. The strength/stress ratio showed generally a bell-shaped but little skewed to left distribution over the distance increased from the left larger tunnel, similarly to the variation of the minor principal stress. For the inter-tunnel distance less than 0.5D, the lowest strength/stress ratio values were shown to be below 1.0 for all diverging directions ($0^{\circ}$, $30^{\circ}$, $60^{\circ}$ and $90^{\circ}$). The failure patterns observed from the model test were found to be reasonably consistent with the results of numerical analysis.

  • In this paper, 6bit SAR ADC tolerant to ionizing radiation is presented. Radiation tolerance is achieved by using the Dummy Gate Assisted (DGA) MOSFET which was proposed to suppress the leakage current induced by ionizing radiation and its comparing sample is designed with the conventional MOSFET. The designed ADC consists of binary capacitor DAC, dynamic latch comparator, and digital logic and was fabricated using a standard 0.35um CMOS process. Irradiation was performed by Co-60 gamma ray. After the irradiation, ADC designed with the conventional MOSFET did not operate properly. On the contrary, ADC designed with the DGA MOSFET showed a little parametric degradation of which DNL was increased from 0.7LSB to 2.0LSB and INL was increased from 1.8LSB to 3.2LSB. In spite of its parametric degradation, analog to digital conversion in the ADC with DGA MOSFET was found to be possible.

  • Cable voltage was measured simultaneously at Hamada, Japan and Pusan, Korea, using an inservice telephone cable from March to December 1990. The spectral and harmonic analyses of these data sets show that tidal signals are dominant, and that tidal constituents $M_2$ and $O_1$, which are not affected by solar geomagnetic variations, have almost the same amplitude and are of opposite phase to each other. comparing the voltage difference in 1990 with that measured using the now abandoned cable in 1998, there are dominant tidal signals at the same periods in both data sets. They have approximately the same amplitude and phase for $M_2andO_1$. The relationship between the observed voltage and the volume transport through the Korea Strait can be considered robust and stable over time. The conversion factor from voltage to transport is estimated to be $11.9{\times}10^6m^3S^{-1}volt^{-1}$ by comparing the amplitude of model-derived $M_2$ tidal transport with that of the voltage difference in 1998. This value changes to $8.6{\times}10^6m^3S^{-1}volt^{-1}$ when taking into consideration the horizontal electric current effect. This effect depends on the downstream length scale of the flow. To obtain a more reliable and stable conversion factor from voltage to transport, the voltage should be compared with observed sub-tidal transports, which may have long downstream length scales.

  • There have been reported numberous cases of liver scanning in use of $^{198}Au$ colloid by many investigators, however, one in use of $^{113m}In$ colloid has not been reported as yet in this country. The dose of $^{113m}In$ for high diagnostic value in examination of each organ was determined and the dignostic interpretability of liver scanning with the use of $^{113m}In$ was carefully evaluated in comparison with the results of the liver scanning by the conventionally applied radioisotopes. The comparative study of both figures of liver scannings with the use of $^{113m}In$ colloid and $^{198}Au$ colloid delivered following results: 1. The liver uptake rate and clearance into peripheral blood were accentuated more in case of $^{113m}In$ colloid than in case of $^{198}Au$ colloid. 2. The interpretability of space occupying lesion in liver scanning with $^{113m}In$ was also superior to one with $^{198}Au$. 3. The figure of liver scanning with $^{113m}In$ colloid corresponds not always to the figure with $^{198}Au$. This difference can be explained by differences of phagocytic ability of reticuloendotherial system within liver. 4. In the liver scanning with $^{113m}In$ colloid, the spleen is also visualized even in normal examinee. 5. In the cases of disturbed liver function, uptake is more decreased in use of $^{113m}In$ colloid than in $^{198}Au$, in the spleen, however, the way is contrary. 6. With use of $^{113m}In$ colloid, the time required for scanning could be shortened in comparison with $^{198}Au$. 7. The filtration of $^{113m}In$ colloid for scanning prior to human administration gives an expectation for better scanning figure.
