  • As patient satisfaction is a crucial component of improved health care outcomes, there is a need to evaluate the relationship between physicians' attitude and patients' satisfaction. The objective of this study is to examine the relationship between patients' satisfaction and physicians' friendly and caring attitudes by using recent physician ratings by patients. Data from a cross-sectional survey using a convenience sampling was utilized to examine the relationship between physicians' attitudes and patients' satisfaction. The independent variable was the physician's attitude, and the dependent variables were patients' satisfaction with the physician and the office setting. A total of 273,994 patients it the US were included. The patients' average (standard deviation, SD) satisfaction with the physician was 78.08 (0.14), and the average (SD) satisfaction with the office setting was 78.62 (0.12) out of 100. Physicians' attitude was a significant predicting factor impacting the patients' satisfaction with the physician and the office setting (p < 0.001). To facilitate patients' satisfaction with healthcare, a continuous effort to develop physicians' ability to communicate in an empathetic manner should be undertaken so that patients perceive their physicians as empathetic.

  • Soils suppressive and conducive to ginseng root rot were studied by examining the mycelial growth of Fusarium solani, Phytophthora cactorum, and Sclerotinia sp. on extracts of each type soil. Rhizosphere environments of the two soils were also compared. Mycelial growth of all root rot fungi used was more severely restrained on the suppressive soil extract agar than that of conducive one. However, when heated at 100C for 30 minutes, mycelial growth of F. solani and Sclerotinia sp. was not affected, regardless of type soil used, whereas R. solani and P. cactorum grew better on conducive soil extract. Mycelial growth of all fungi used was stimulated as the treated temperature became higher. No significant differences between the two types of the soil were found in propagules of F. solani. The numbers of total fungi and total bacteria and the ratioes of total fungi to Fusarium and total bacteria to Fusarium were higher in the suppressive soils than in the conducive ones. Higher amount of clay existed in the suppressive soils, Mg and Na contents were lower in those soils than the conducive ones.

  • Hairless mice (Skh:HR-1) exposed to single doses (0.5, 1.0 and 3. OMED) of UV-B radiation were displayed remarkable changes of barrier function and surface morphology. Trans- epidermal water loss (TEWL) as an index of barrier function was measured by evaporimeter, and wrinkle density (WD) as an index of morphological alteration was measured by image analyzer. Significant changes of TEWL were not observed in the control and 0. SMED group, but 1.OMED and 3. OMED groups noted significant difference. TEWL of 3. OMED group was rapidly increased to the 3rd day and decreased until the 14th day when it reached nearly to normal level, Time-courses of TBWL for 1. OMEB and 3. OMED groups displayed similar pattern, but different only in the magnitude. WD were significantly decreased during the 3rd-5th day in all of the irradiated groups and then increased during the last period to the 14th day, but did not recover the normal level at the 14th day. Time-courses of WD for all groups exhibited similarity, and were entirely dependent on the exposed doses. We also observed histological changes which included hyperplasia, sunburn cell (SBC) formation, accumulation of polymorphonuclear leukocyte (PMNs), and loss of collagen of UVB- exposed hairless mouse skin. Changes of TEWL and WD are helpful in understanding of epidermal and dermal damages by single exposure of UVB.

  • This study was conducted to investigate the antioxidant and antimicrobial activities of the hot-water and methanol extracts of raw and black Doraji to increase its utilization. In order to prepare the black Doraji, it was steamed for 15 days at a temperature of $60^{\circ}C$ and then it was dried at a temperature of $30^{\circ}C$ for 3 hr. The methanol extract from the black Doraji (BM) contained the highest levels of total polyphenols among the extracts, and the total polyphenol content of the extract from a black Doraji was higher than that of the extract from a raw Doraji. The total flavonoid contents of the hot-water extract from a black Doraji (BW) was the highest (7.94 mgQE/g) among the samples. The DPPH and ABTS radical scavenging activities increased according to the increase in the concentrations of the Doraji extracts. The BM has the highest radical scavenging activity among the extracts. Each extract showed a slight difference in the antibacterial activity according to the tested strains. The Black Doraji showed a higher antimicrobial activity compared to the raw Doraji. The hot-water extracts demonstrated higher activities than the methanol extracts, and the BW revealed the strongest activity. In this study, the black Doraji showed more effect of the antioxidant and anti-microbial activities than the raw Doraji. These results will provide fundamental data for improving the sitological value and the black Doraji can be used as a valuable resource for the development of nutraceutical foods.

  • The accuracy of rainfall data for a hydrological modeling study is important. NEXRAD (Next Generation Radar) rainfall data estimated by WRS-88D (Weather Surveillance Radar - 1988 Doppler) radar system has advantages of its finer spatial and temporal resolution. In this study, NEXRAD rainfall data was tested and compared with conventional weather station data using the previously calibrated SWAT (Soil and Water Assessment Tool) model to identify local storms and to analyze the impacts on hydrology. The previous study used NEXRAD data from the year of 2000 and the NEXRAD data was substituted with weather station data in the model simulation in this study. In a selected watershed and a selected year (2006), rainfall data between two datasets showed discrepancies mainly due to the distance between weather station and study area. The largest difference between two datasets was 94.5 mm (NEXRAD was larger) and 71.6 mm (weather station was larger) respectively. The differences indicate that either recorded rainfalls were occurred mostly out of the study area or local storms only in the study area. The flow output from the study area was also compared with observed data, and modeled flow agreed much better when the simulation used NEXRAD data.

  • Gel-type fermented milk was prepared from milk or mixture of milk and apple juice/grape juice. Acid production (pH change) and growth of Lactobacillus acidophilus (KCTC 2182) were studied. The effects of juice addition on sensory property of fermented milk were also studied. The pH value of samples containing mixture of milk and apple juice/grape juice (25 mL : 25 mL to 5 mL : 45 mL) was lower than that of milk sample. However, number of viable cells of L. acidophilus at 21 hr in milk and samples containing juices was similar. During lactic fermentation for 24 hr, pH of all samples dropped significantly between 6 hr and 21 hr. pH values of mixture of milk and juices were lower than that of milk sample. Growth curve showed that lag phase continued to approximately 3 hr and log phase continued to approximately 15 hr in all samples. Number of viable cells in all samples was similar Sensory evaluation showed that overall acceptability of fermented milk prepared from apple juice/grape juice and milk (15 mL : 35 mL or 5 mL : 45 mL) was better than that of reference sample. The optimum ratio of mixture of juice and milk was 15 mL : 35 mL. The score values of sensory test of fermented milk prepared from mixture of grape juice and milk were slightly higher than those of mixture of apple juice and milk.

  • The results of analyzing the hydrographic observations in the southwestern sea of Jeju Island in the last 10 days of August 1999 to investigate the characteristics of oceanic front area appeared in the East China Sea in August from is summarized as follows: In Line A, a front appears at Station A5 of 124°E and 31°30'N, showing relatively uniform density of 21.4 to 22.1 in the surface layer of 50m depth, which is distinguished from 22.0 shown in the sides of China and open ocean. In Line B, a front also appears at Station B6 of 124°E and 33°N, of which density is distinguished from 20.0 shown in the sides of China and open ocean as In Line A. As a result, the front area caused by fresh water runoffs from the Yangtze River in the East China Sea is formed at 124°E and 124°30'in the direction of east and northeast from Yangtze River, respectively. Nutrient concentrations in the study area are characterized by higher density in the side of China and by clear density difference between the upper and the lower layers in the side of open ocean, while by uniformly lower density concentration between the upper and the lower layers in the front area. Chlorophyll-α concentrations is high in the sides of China and open ocean, while low in the front area. Judging from the above results, the productivity in the front area is lower according to the inactivity of phytoplankton due to increased flow from vertical mixing between the upper layer and the lower layer. Also, the front area in the East China Sea in summer may be moved towards the adjacent sea of Jeju Island by increasing fresh water runoffs from the Yangtze River in summer.

  • This study investigated the design of a snap fit, which is widely used for fastening plastic parts. We analyzed the assembly mechanism of a lock snapfit, measured the assembly force and separation force based on the design of experiments, and derived a regression equation through an analysis of variance. The response surface methodology was also used. Polybutylene terephthalate was used to fabricate specimens, and the assembly force and separation force were measured using a micro-tensile tester. The length, width, thickness, and interference were considered as factors. A second-order regression model was used to derive the regression equation. The assembly force decreased with increasing length and width, but it increased with increasing thickness and interference. The finite element method was used to analyze the assembly mechanics. The width decreased the assembly force by increasing the ductility. The influences of the factors for low assembly force and high release force were shown to be opposite to each other. It was necessary to design a structure that minimized the assembly force while maintaining an appropriate level of separation force.

  • The present study describes the preliminary evaluation of the cytotoxicity from Gleditsiae Semen extracts. G. Semen was extracted with methanol, ethanol, and acetone, and then cytotoxic effect of these extracts was measured by the MTT reduction assay and phase-contrast microscopy on the HT-29 human colon carcinoma cells. Among these extracts, methanol extract showed the highest cytotoxic activity on the HT-29 cells. The methanol extract was further fractionated with n-hexane, diethyl ether, ethyl acetate, and water layer according to the degree of polarity. The water layer showed the highest inhibitory activity on the growth of HT-29 cells, but the other fractions indicated the low cytotoxic activity. In addition, water layer also showed the cytotoxic activity against SW620 human colon carcinoma cells. Based on these results, we suggest that extracts of G. Semen may contain bioactive materials and are potential candidates as chemotherapeutic agents against human colon carcinoma cells.
