  • An 8192-point pipelined FFT/IFFT processor core is designed, which can be used in multi-carrier modulation systems such as DUf-based VDSL modem and OFDM-based DVB system. In order to improve the signal-to-quantization-noise ratio (SQNR) of FFT/IFFT results, two-step convergent block floating-point (TS_CBFP) scaling is employed. Since the proposed TS_CBFP scaling does not require additional buffer memory, it reduces memory as much as about 80% when compared with conventional CBFP methods, resulting in area-and power-efficient implementation. The SQNR of about 60-㏈ is achieved with 10-bit input, 14-bit internal data and twiddle factors, and 16-bit output. The core synthesized using 0.25-$\mu\textrm{m}$ CMOS library has about 76,300 gates, 390K bits RAM, and twiddle factor ROM of 39K bits. Simulation results show that it can safely operate up to 50-㎒ clock frequency at 2.5-V supply, resulting that a 8192-point FFT/IFFT can be computed every 164-${\mu}\textrm{s}$. It was verified by Xilinx FPGA implementation.

  • This paper presents an Implementation of Korean standard 128-bit block cipher SEED for the small (8 or 16-bits) embedded system using a low-cost FPGA(Field Programmable Gate Array) chip. Due to their limited computing and storage capacities most of the 8-bits/16-bits small embedded systems require a separate and dedicated cryptography processor for data encryption and decryption process which require relatively heavy computation job. So, in order to integrate the SEED with other logic circuit block in a single chip we need to invent a design which minimizes the area demand while maintaining the proper performance. But, the straight-forward mapping of the SEED specification into hardware design results in exceedingly large circuit area for a low-cost FPGA capacity. Therefore, in this paper we present a design which maximize the resource sharing and utilizing the modern FPGA features to reduce the area demand resulting in the successful implementation of the SEED plus interface logic with single low-cost FPGA. We achieved 66% area accupation by our SEED design for the XC2S100 (a Spartan-II series FPGA from Xilinx) and data throughput more than 66Mbps. This Performance is sufficient for the small scale embedded system while achieving tight area requirement.

  • A LEA (Lightweight Encryption Algorithm) crypto-processor was designed, which supports three master key lengths of 128/ 192/256-bit, ECB and CTR modes of operation. To achieve high throughput rate, the round transformation block was designed with 128 bits datapath and a pipelined structure of 16 stages. Encryption/decryption is carried out through 12/14/16 pipelined stages according to the master key length, and each pipelined stage performs round transformation twice. The key scheduler block was optimized to share hardware resources that are required for encryption, decryption, and three master key lengths. The round keys generated by key scheduler are stored in 32 round key registers, and are repeatedly used in round transformation until master key is updated. The pipelined LEA processor was verified by FPGA implementation, and the estimated performance is about 8.3 Gbps at the maximum clock frequency of 130 MHz.

  • Physical modeling has been widely used for sound synthesis since it synthesizes high quality sound which is similar to real-sound for musical instruments. However, physical modeling requires a lot of parameters to synthesize a large number of sounds simultaneously for the musical instrument, preventing its real-time processing. To solve this problem, this paper proposes a single instruction, multiple data (SIMD) based multi-core processor that supports real-time processing of sound synthesis of gayageum which is a representative Korean traditional musical instrument. The proposed SIMD-base multi-core processor consists of 12 processing elements (PE) to control 12 strings of gayageum in which each PE supports modeling of the corresponding string. The proposed SIMD-based multi-core processor can generate synthesized sounds of 12 strings simultaneously after receiving excitation signals and parameters of each string as an input. Experimental results using a sampling reate 44.1 kHz and 16 bits quantization show that synthesis sound using the proposed multi-core processor was very similar to the original sound. In addition, the proposed multi-core processor outperforms commercial processors(TI's TMS320C6416, ARM926EJ-S, ARM1020E) in terms of execution time ($5.6{\sim}11.4{\times}$ better) and energy efficiency (about $553{\sim}1,424{\times}$ better).

  • In this paper, the extension of the addressing mode in the 16-bit Thumb instruction set architecture is proposed to improve the performance of 16-bit Thumb code. The key idea of the proposed approach is the introduction of new addressing modes for more frequent instructions by using the saved bits from the reduction of the register fields in less frequently used instructions. The proposed approach adopts efficient addressing modes from the 32-bit ARM architecture, which is the superset of the 16-bit Thumb architecture. To speed up access to a data list, scaled register offset addressing mode and post-indexed addressing mode are introduced for load and store instructions. Experiments show that the proposed approach improves performance by an average of 8.5% when compared to the conventional approach.

  • A low-power/small-area 128-point FFT processor is designed, which is based on logarithmic number system (LNS) and some design techniques to minimize both hardware complexity and arithmetic error. The complex-number multiplications and additions/subtractions for FFT computation are implemented with LNS adders and look-up table (LUT) rather than using conventional two's complement multipliers and adders. Our design reduces the gate counts by 21% and the memory size by 16% when compared to the conventional two's complement implementation. Also, the estimated power consumption is reduced by about 18%. The LNS-based FFT processor synthesized with 0.35 ${\mu}m$ CMOS standard cell library has 39,910 gates and 2,880 bits memory. It can compute a 128-point FIT in 2.13 ${\mu}s$ with 60 MHz@2.5V, and has the average SQNR of 40.7 dB.

  • Physical modeling is a synthesis method of high quality sound which is similar to real sound for musical instruments. However, since physical modeling requires a lot of parameters to synthesize sound of a musical instrument, it prevents real-time processing for the musical instrument which supports a large number of sounds simultaneously. To solve this problem, this paper proposes a single instruction multiple data (SIMD) parallel processor that supports real-time processing of sound synthesis of guitar, a representative plucked string musical instrument. To control six strings of guitar, we used a SIMD parallel processor which consists of six processing elements (PEs). Each PE supports modeling of the corresponding string. The proposed SIMD processor can generate synthesized sounds of six strings simultaneously when a parallel synthesis algorithm receives excitation signals and parameters of each string as an input. Experimental results using a sampling rate 44.1 kHz and 16 bits quantization indicate that synthesis sounds using the proposed parallel processor were very similar to original sound. In addition, the proposed parallel processor outperforms commercial TI's TMS320C6416 in terms of execution time (8.9x better) and energy efficiency (39.8x better).

  • In this paper, the parallel branch instruction is proposed which executes a branch instruction and the frequently used instruction simultaneously to improve the performance of Thumb-2 instruction set architecture. In the proposed approach, new 32-bit parallel branch instructions are introduced which combine 16-bit branch instruction with each of the frequently used 16-bit LOAD, ADD, MOV, STORE, and SUB instructions, respectively. To provide the encoding space of the new instructions, the register field in less frequently executed instructions is reduced, and the new instructions are encoded by using the saved bits. Experiments show that the proposed approach improves performance by an average of 8.0% when compared to the conventional approach.
