The weathering properties and provenance of loess-paleosol sequence deposited on gravel layer of river terrace in Bongdong-eup, Wangju-gun, Jeonbuk Province are examined using soil analysis, magnetic susceptibility measurement, grain size and element analysis. The Bongdong section consists of, from top to bottom, Layer 1(paleosol), Layer 2(loess), Layer 3(paleosol) and the gravel layer of river terrace. The magnetic susceptibility values show the systematic variations in the sequence and the results of grain size analysis reveal that the sequence was deposited by not fluvial or slope process, but eolian process, and that contains finer materials than the Daecheon loess and Chinese Loess Plateau. Among the results of soil analysis, organic contents indicate systematic variations similar to the magnetic susceptibility. The wet soil colors further reflect the characteristics of the sequence rather than the dry soil colors. Based on the analytical results of major and rare earth elements, the eolian materials contained in the sequence were deposited by the materials originated from the areas where the Chinese Loess Plateau has been originated or the reworked materials from the Chinese Loess Plateau, and after the depositions, the materials experienced the intensive chemical weathering under the humid-warm climatic conditions in the Korean Peninsula.
The granitoids in the Mt. Geumjeong, Busan can be divided into granodiorite, hornblende granite, adamellite, tonalite, biotite granite and micrographic granite. The geochemical characteristics of the Mt. Geumjeong granites indicate that they were crystallized from a calc-alkaline series and that they belong to Ⅰ-type granitic rocks which evolved from granodioritic magma into hornblende granite, adamellite, biotitie granite, and finally micrographic granite through fractional crystallization of plagioclase. The crystallization pressures and temperatures of the minimum melt compositions of the granitic rocks were estimated to about 1∼5 kbar and 720∼700℃. The trace element composition and REE patterns, characterized by a high LILE/HFSE ratio and enrichments in LREE, indicate typical continental margin arc calc-alkaline rocks produced in the subduction environment. The Rb-Sr isotopic data for the Mt. Geumjeong granites define a well-defined isochron yielding as age of 69.6±1.9 Ma with an initial Sr isotopic ratio of 0.70503.
The patternless potteries excavated from the Baekseokdong Gojaemigol site in Cheonan, was subdivided into talc and non-talc (including amphibole) type pottery. The potteries showed black, reddish brown and yellowish brown colors, but represent to difference with occurrences and internal texture of raw materials and temper minerals. The all potteries and paleosoils are commonly high content of temper minerals with poorly sorting and roundness of particles, and the paleosoils composed mainly of quartz, plagioclase, mica, chlorite and kaolinite. Between the talc and non-talc type potteries are very similar with magnetic susceptibility, absorption ratio and specific gravity. Geochemical behaviors of major, minor, compatible and incompatible elements in talc pottery are very similar with amphibole, non-talc pottery and paleosoils, and well correspondence with enrichment and deficiency patterns of each element, and the talc and amphibole potteries are highly enriched patterns of MgO concentration. In paleosoils of Gojaemigol site, talc and amphibole are not detected, therefore, making the pottery of the site estimate the possible to artificial additions of the temper minerals of talc and amphibole used interbedded talc layer within gneiss complex near the Baekseokdong area. Based on the phase relations, differential thermal and thermal gravimetric analyses, the potteries could be classified into two groups by firing temperature. The one group of talc temper pottery fired from 800 to $870^{\circ}C$ and the other group of amphibole and non-talc temper pottery revealed of 900 to $950^{\circ}C$.
Andesitic pyroclastics and lava flows are deposited as a part of composite volcanoes by Cretaceous volcanic activity in Geojae Island, off the coast of Korea. The andesitic pyroclastics are composed of tuff breccia and lapilli tuff minor intercalated tuff. Lava flows are divided into dense and porphyritic andesite containing phenocrysts of plagioclase, pyroxene, and/or hornblende. The andesitic rocks represent charactersitcs of carc-alkaline BAR association with basalt, basaltic andesite, andesite, and dacite to rhyolite. Major element variations of the volcanic rocks show that $Al_2O_3$, total FeO, CaO, MgO and $TiO_2$ decrease with increasing $SiO_2$ but $K_2O$ and total alkalis increase, and represent differntiation trend of calc-alkaline rock series. In spider diagram, contents of Sr, K, Rb, Ba, and Th are relatively high, but contents of Nb, P, Ti and Cr are low. These petrochemcial characteristics are similar to those of rocks from island arc or continental margein related to plate subduction. Chondrite-normalized REE patterns of volcanic rocks are paralle to subparallel, with LREE enriched than HREE, and show gradual increase of negative Eu anomaly from basalt to dacite and rhyolite, suggesting comagmatic fractional crystallization with minor effects of assimilation and magma mixing. Andesitic rocks are assumed medium-K orogenic andesites that formed in the tectomagmatic environment of subduction zone under normal continental margin arc.

Pung-nap mudcastle has brought wide attention to archaeologists since scientific studies were carried out on the various types of building sites and excavated potteries related to A period of Baekje Kindom when it sat Hansung as the capital. It is identified that clay from Ra-No.19 site of Pung-Nap mudcastle has different from compositions that of residential soil. From archaeological point of view, it is believed that the the soil was a source material for potteries due to the appropriate viscosity and inclusions. Mineralogical and geochemical studies show that the compositions between the source material and randomly chosen two potteries from the same site are similar. Behavior pattern classification of major, trace and rare elements provides also very similar result. Artificial specimen has been made at different temperature in order to estimate firing temperature of the potteries by means of various kinds of instrumental application. As a result of the study, it is believed that the firing temperature of the red and brown pottery was $550{\sim}600^{\circ}C$ and $900{\sim}1,000^{\circ}C$ respectively.

Major and trace elements, and Sr, Nd, isotopic composition analysis have been carried out on the Miocene basalt (Huangsongpu basalt, 20 Ma) 25 km to northeast from the Mt. Baekdu. The basalt has Na2O+K2O=3.5~4.7 wt.%, and MgO=9.9~11.1 wt.%, containing Mg-rich olivine (Mg#=75~86), clinopyroxene (Mg#=72~85) and Ca-rich plagioclase micro-phenocrysts. These data suggest that the basalt belongs to the alkaline magma series with a primitive nature, crystallized at a near-liquidus. The basalt is also characterized by high Cr (394~479 ppm) and Ni (389~519 ppm) contents, Nb-Ta enrichment anomalies and OIB-like trace elements patterns, displaying identical signatures to those of typical intraplate magmas. The rare earth element (REE) patterns of the basalt and high (Gd/Yb)sample/(Gd/Yb)PM ratio (=2.8~3.5) suggest the parental magma was derived from relatively low-degree (3~5%) partial melting of garnet peridotite. The 143Nd/144Nd and 87Sr/86Sr composition of the basalt are higher than those of BSE. The high 87Sr/86Sr (= ~0.7058) ratio of the basalt indicates a contribution of recycled ancient oceanic crust or continental crust on the Pacific slab suggesting that the Huangsongpu basalt was generated from metasomatized mantle.
The Paleogene dikes intruding into the late Cretaceous granodiorite are pervasively observed in the Irun-myeon, eastern Geoje Island. They are classified into three groups: NW-trending acidic dike swarm and WNW- (A-Group) and $NS{\sim}NNE-trending$ (B-Group) basic dike swarms. Based on their cross-cutting relationships, the earliest is the acidic dike group and fellowed by A- and B-Groups in succession. The acidic dikes seem to have intruded into tension gashes induced by the sinistral strike-slip faulting of the Yangsan fault system during the late $Cretaceous{\sim}early$ Paleogene. In terms of rock-type, orientation, age, and geochemistry, A-Group and B-Group are intimately correlated with the intermediate and basic dike swarms in the Gyeongju-Gampo area, respectively. These results significantly suggest that the corresponding dike swarms are genetically related. Based on the K-Ar and Ar-Ar age data, A- and B- Groups were intruded during $64{\sim}52\;Ma$ and $51{\sim}44\;Ma$, respectively. The result means that the direction of tensional stress in and around the SE Korean peninsula was changed abruptly from NNE-SSW to $EW{\sim}WNW-ESE$ at about 51 Ma. Considering the tectonic environments during the Paleogene, it is interpreted that A-Group was injected along the WNW-trending tensional fractures developed under an regional sinistral simple shear regime which was caused by the north-northwestward oblique subduction of the Pacific plate beneath the Eurasian plate. Meanwhile, the regional stress caused by the collision of India and Eurasia continents at about 55 Ma was likely propagated to the East Asia at about 51 Ma, and then the East Asia including the Korean peninsula was extruded eastwards as a trench-rollback and the dip of downgoing slab of the Pacific plate was abruptly steepened. As a result, the strong suction-force along the plate boundary produced a tensional stress field trending EW or WNW-ESE in and around the Korean peninsula, which resultantly induced B-Group to intrude passively into the study area.

The synergistic solvent extraction of rare earth elements such as europium and yttrium has been investigated by the extractant with crown ether as an additive. Macrocyclic ligand as host-guest compounds form more stable complexes with metal ions which have the similar size of the cavity of crown ether. In our previous study[14] founded that the extraction used fatty acid of the various alkyl chain length. Based on the results of the previous experiment, the synergistic separation effect of two metals investigated that the hexanoic acid had was the worst extraction effect which added a crown ether such as 18-crown-6 ether, 15-crown-5 ether, and 12-crown-4 ether. In this study, the concentrations of hexanoic acid have showed the separation effect, and then the concentrations and kind of crown ether are performed for synergistic extraction at the hexanoic acid concentration of the highest separation effect. As a results, the separation rate is the highest value of 1.72 at 0.05 M hexanoic acid, and 0.002M 15-crown-5 ether is the best value in other concentrations and kind of crown ether, it is about twice of using only hexanoic acid. Moreover, the extraction species of two metals has been founded $MLR_3{\cdot}3RH$ form when added the crown ether.
Rare earth based calcium aluminate phosphor ($CaAl_2O_4:Eu^{2+}$, $Nd^{3+}$) supported $TiO_2$ nanoparticles are synthesized by using sol-gel method, which are further characterized using powder X-ray diffraction (XRD), fourier transform infrared (FT-IR), diffuse reflectance UV-Visible spectroscopy (DRS UV-Vis) and transmission electron microscopy (TEM). The XRD pattern of as-prepared and sintered phosphor supported $TiO_2$ does not show the tendency to change the crystal structure from anatase to rutile phase up to $600^{\circ}C$. This indicates that the phosphor support might inhibit the densification and crystallite growth by providing dissimilar boundaries. The diffuse reflectance spectral (DRS) measurements showed shift towards longer wavelength indicating reduction in the band-gap energy as compared to free $TiO_2$. The FT-IR spectra of phosphor supported $TiO_2$ nanoparticles show shift in the peak positions to lower wavelengths. This indicates that the $TiO_2$ nanoparticles are not free, but covalently bonded to the phosphor support. TEM micrographs show presence of crystalline and spherical $TiO_2$ nanoparticles (8 - 15 nm diameter) dispersed uniformly on the surface of phosphor.
Geochemical study was performed on black slates and interbedded U-bearing coaly slates in Deokpyeongri area, the representative uranium mineralized district of the Ogcheon Metamorphic Belt, to discuss the genetic environments of the uranium deposit. REE concentration (254 ppm) of the black slates is higher than that (169 ppm) of the coaly slates and NASC-normalized REE patterns of the coaly slates show remarkable positive Eu anomaly. l11e redox-sensitive trace elements such as V, Cr, Co, Ni, Mo and U in the coaly slates are highly enriched compared to the black slates, especially for V of 24 times, Mo of 62 times, and U of 60 times. In additions, Pd and Pt are also enriched in the coaly slates. Positive Eu anomaly and the noticeable enrichment of the elements listed above compared to those of NASC indicate that those elements were not derived from common seawater but deposited under high temperature and reducing environment of submarine hydrothermal activities. Wide compositional ranges of major elements ($SiO_2/Al_2O_3$: 3.98~11.88, $Al_2O_3/Na_2O$: 25.6~139.06, $K_2O/Na_2O$: 6.80~46.85) also suggest that the source rocks of the sediments are mixtures of sedimentary rocks and igneous rocks. Higher sulfur contents in the coaly slates, 2.6 wt.%, than those in the black slates, 0.6 wt.% also indicates that the former was influenced by hydrothermal activities containing much sulfur. These geochemical characteristics are similar to the genetic environments of South China type PGE deposits (Mo-Ni-Zn-PGE) which is geotectonically correlated with the Ogcheon Metamorphic Belt and is known as sedimentary-exhalative deposits. In conclusions, the uranium and other metallic elements mineralization seems to have occurred in the sedimentary basin that was affected by submarine hydrothermal activities and rich in organic materials under oxygen-poor environments as well.
