Studies of the Definition and Explanation of Entropy in the GeneralChemistry Textbook (일반화학 교재에 나타난 엔트로피 정의와 설명의 고찰)

  • In this study, entropy definition and explanation in twelve general chemistry textbooks published in USA including what Korean universities select are analyzed. Analysis consists of two parts. One is diachronic analysis which focuses on the change between editions of same authors and the other is contents analysis composed of three sections‐ disorder in entropy definition and explanation, microstates number in entropy definition and explanation, possibility of alternative conception in learning statistical entropy and thermal entropy. As a result, the definition that entropy is the measure of disorder is denied and explanation using microstates number is introduced. Also, caution for the possibility of alternative conception that there are two different entropies is found. Reflecting the change in entropy explanation on new chemistry curriculum and reeducating teachers are meaningful on improvement of Korean chemistry education.

  • 최근에 pH 감지막의 감지감도특성을 평가하기 위해 electrolyte insulator semiconductor (EIS) 구조가 유용하게 이용되고 있다. EIS는 간단한 구조와 pH 용액에 빠른 응답속도, 낮은 단가 및 집적이 용이하다는 장점이 있다. EIS 구조에서 화학적 용액에 대한 감지감도 평가 중 가장 중요하게 작용하는 부분이 감지막이다. 이 감지막은 감지 대상 물질과 물리적으로 직접 접촉되는 부분으로서 일반적으로 기계적/화학적 강도가 우수한 실리콘 산화막($SiO_2$)이 많이 사용되어져 왔다. 최근에는 기존의 $SiO_2$ 보다 성능이 향상된 감지막을 개발하기 위하여 $Al_2O_3$, $HfO_2$, $ZrO_2$, 그리고 $Ta_2O_5$와 같은 고유전 상수(high-k)를 가지는 물질들을 EIS 센서의 감지막으로 이용하는 연구가 활발하게 진행되고 있다. High-k 물질 중 $Al_2O_3$는 산성에서 알칼리성 영역까지의 넓은 화학안정성을 가지며 화학용액에 대해 내구성이 우수한 특성을 가진다. $HfO_2$은 내식성이 뛰어나며 출력특성이 높은 장점을 가진 물질이다. 본 실험에서는 특성이 다른 두 물질을 EIS의 감지막으로 각각 사용하여 두께에 따른 의존성을 평가하였다. 제작한 EIS 구조의 pH 센서를 바이오 센서에 적용하였을 때 신호대 잡음비(SNR: signal to noise)가 여전히 취약하다는 문제점이 있었다. 이런 문제점을 보완하기 위하여 감지막의 물리적 두께는 점점 얇아지게 되었고 그 결과 높은 출력 특성을 얻게 되었지만, 감지막이 얇아짐에 따라서 화학 용액 중의 이온 침투로 인한 감지막 자체의 손상 또한 심각한 문제로 대두되었다. 이로 인해 최적화 된 감지막의 두께를 얻을 필요가 있다. 결론적으로 $Al_2O_3$, $HfO_2$ 두 감지막 모두 두께가 23 nm일 때 가장 우수한 특성을 보였으며, $Al_2O_3$를 감지막으로 사용하였을 경우 화학적 용액에 대해 내구성이 뛰어났고, $HfO_2$을 사용하였을 때에는 화학적 용액에 대한 안정성 보다는 pH 용액변화에 따른 향상된 감지감도특성을 보였다.

The Analysis of the Korean Middle School Students' Responses to Chemistry Problems Under the 6th National Curriculum in the Third International Mathematics and Science Study-Repeat (TIMSS-R) (제3차 수학 · 과학 성취도 국제 비교 반복 연구(TIMSS-R) 중 제6차 교육과정상의 화학 문항에 대한 우리 나라 중학생의 응답 분석)

  • In this study, the chemistry achievement of the Korean 8th grade students in the Third Inter-national Mathematics and Science Study-Repeat(TIMSS-R), which was administered internationally in 1999,was analyzed. By the 6th national curriculum, 31 chemistry problems were selected from the categories of 'classification of matter', 'structure of matter', 'chemical reactivity and transformations', 'physical properties and physical changes of matter', 'heat and temperature', 'subatomic particles', 'pollution', 'scientific method',and 'scientific measurements' among the total 143 problems. Based on the analysis of the percentage of cor-rectness on each problem, the weak and strong points of the 6th curriculum were discussed. The implications for the development of national curriculum and textbook are suggested.

The Effects of Argumentation-based General Chemistry Laboratory on Preservice Science Teachers' Understanding of Chemistry Concepts and Writing (논의가 강조된 일반화학실험이 예비교사의 글쓰기 능력 및 화학개념 이해에 미치는 효과)

  • The purpose of this study was to examine the effects of argumentation-based general chemistry laboratory on preservice science teachers' chemistry concepts understanding and writing. Five topics about argumentation-based general chemistry laboratory activities were developed using Science Writing Heuristic (SWH) approach. Summary Writing Test, and Chemistry Concepts Test were developed as tools to examine the effects of this approach. Both Argumentation-based general chemistry laboratory activities and traditional general chemistry laboratory activities were implemented for the experimental group (23 students), and traditional general chemistry laboratory activities were implemented for the comparative group (16 students). Results of this study indicated that there were significant differences in both groups' chemistry concepts understanding and summary writing. The experimental group showed significantly higher mean score than comparative group in chemistry concepts understanding and summary writing. In the analysis of the sub-component of Summary Writing, there were no significant difference between both groups in 'Big Idea.' However, the experimental group gained significantly higher mean score in 'argumentation,' 'understanding of science concepts,' and 'rhetoric structure.' The results showed that argumentation-based general chemistry laboratory programs were effective in achieving chemistry concepts understanding and writing in general chemistry laboratory.

옥천변성대 북동부(충주-황강리 지역)내 앰피볼라이트의 암석 화학적 고찰

  • 옥천변성대의 충주-황강리 지역내 앰피볼라이트의 기원암은 염기성 화성암으로 쏠레이아이트 계열의 변이질암에 속한다. Fe $O^{*}$/MgO값의 변화에 대하여 분별작용에 의해 영향을 받는 주성분 원소와 미량원소들의 변화를 보게되면 Ti $O_2$, Fe $O^{*}$와 불호정성 원소(incompatible element)인 Zr, Nb, Hf, Ta, Th 등은 분별작용동안 증가하는 반면 호정성 원소(compatible element)인 MgO, $Al_2$ $O_3$, Ni, Cr 등은 감소하는 경향을 보여주고 있다. Fe $O^{*}$/MgO, Ti $O_2$ 그리고 Fe $O^{*}$는 심해성 쏠레이아이트 영역으로부터 분화된 경향을 나타내 주고 있다. Ni, Cr은 Fe $O^{*}$/MgO값의 증가에 따라 급속히 감소하며 안정한 대륙과 해저화산의 영역에 도시되고 있으며 칼크-알칼리(CA)와는 관계가 없고 쏠레이아이트의 영역에서 변화 패턴을 보여주어 앰피볼라이트가 활동적인 대륙연변부의 지구조 환경보다는 안정한 대륙이나 해저화산과 관계가 더 있음을 시사한다. 경휘토류 원소(LREE)는 중휘토류 원소(HREE)에 비해 더욱 부화된 특성을 띠고 원자번호가 증가하면서 표준화된 휘토류 원소패턴의 경사가 점차 감소하는 경향을 보여주고 있다. 대부분의 시료들은 큰 Eu이상치를 갖고 있지 않아 마그마 정출 과정동안 사장석의 분별작용이 거의 수반되지 않았음을 지시하고 전체적인 휘토류 원소의 패턴은 거의 평행하게 나타나므로 기원 마그마가 유사함을 의미하고 있다. 비유동성 원소를 이용한 여러 판별도표들을 통해서 본암은 대륙성 현무암질암으로서 판내부 환경에서 유래되었으며 대륙내부 열곡의 알칼리 현무암과 대륙성 현무암 영역에 속하는 것으로 보아서 대륙지각내 열곡작용과 같은 장력운동에 수반되어 생성된 것임을 시사해 주고 있다. 앰피볼라이트의 지각혼성화를 평가하기 위해 이에 필요한 몇 개의 지화학적 매개변수를 계산한 결과 La/Ta, La/Nb, Nb/Th들의 값이 오염 안된 마그마의 값을 지시해 주어 본암이 지각혼성화 작용을 받지 않은 것으로 나타났다. 대부분의 시료들은 P-타입 MORB의 영역에 속하며 소수의 시료가 T-타입 MORB의 영역에 도시되고 있어 본 앰피볼라이트의 생성에는 양적으로 다른 두 가지의 유사한 마그마가 수반된 것으로 추정된다. 것으로 추정된다.

Three-dimensional Fluid Flow Analysis in Taylor Reactor Using Computational Fluid Dynamics (CFD를 이용한 테일러 반응기의 3차원 유동해석)

  • We conducted the three-dimensional fluid flow analysis in a Taylor reactor using computational fluid dynamics (CFD). The Taylor flow can be categorized into five regions according to Reynolds number, i.e., circular Couette flow (CCF), Taylor vortex flow (TVF), wavy vortex flow (WVF), modulated wavy vortex flow (MWVF), and turbulent Taylor vortex flow (TTVF), and we investigated the flow characteristics at each region. For each region, the shape, number and length of vortices were different and they influenced on the bypass flow. As a result, the Taylor vortex was found at TVF, WVF, MWVF and TTVF regions. The highest number of Taylor vortex was observed at TVF region, while the lowest at TTVF region. The numerical model was validated by comparing with the experimental data and the simulation results were in good agreement with the experimental data.

  • The objective of this research was to analyze curriculum of dental hygiene education program for B.S degree in US and compare with Korea and Japan. The curriculum was classified six domain based on job classification and National Board Examination in Korea. Oral biology content included oral anatomy,dental anatomy,oral histology,oral pathology. Oral physiology was excluded. Clinical dentistry content included only oral radiology, periodontics, dental material,pain control. Most program integrated clinical dental hygiene courses. Most program provided dental practice management content and dental hygiene research courses. Diverse program such as A.S degree,B.S degree,degree completion,distance education programs enabled students to develop their career effectively.

  • The purpose of the study was to investigate the professional level of the Korean non-physics major middle-school science teachers in 'force and motion' content knowledge. For the study, nine science teachers who majored in chemistry, biology, or earth science were sampled from middle-schools in a big city in Korea. The physics concept test-tool (subjective type), which the authors developed, were administered, and then followed by in-depth interviews. The research findings are as follows: Firstly, non-physics major science teachers' correct answer rate in physics knowledge test of secondary school level was not so high that they may have difficulty in teaching correct concepts in physics to middle-school students. Secondly, some teachers show that they can not apply some physics concepts from one to another situation. That means that they may have difficulty in teaching physics conceptual application in various situations to students.

The Effect of Writing a Weekly Report on the Self-directed Learning, Attitude toward science, and Academic achievement (주 단위 보고서 작성이 자기 주도적 학습 능력과 과학에 대한 태도 및 학업 성취도에 미치는 영향)

  • In this study, the effects of writing a weekly report on the students' self-directed learning, the attitudes toward science, and the academic achievements were examined. Two hundred and three students, second graders of a high school participated. Experimental group performed writing a weekly report, while the comparative group performed regular science lessons. The results of this study are as follows: First, MSLQ test showed that there was statistically significant difference in the self-directed learning skills(p<.05). For sub-factors of motivation region, such as internal goals, extrinsic goals, learning beliefs, task value, and self-efficacy and for sub-factors of learning strategy region, such as meta-cognition, peer learning, time management, critical thinking, and demonstrations showed statistically significant results. Second, TOSRA test showed that there was no statistically significant difference in the attitudes toward science (p>.05). However, for sub-factors, such as scientific inquiry and joy to science class showed statistically significant results. Third, there was no statistically significant difference in the academic achievement in Chemistry I class (p>.05). However, top and low achievement level showed statistically significant results.

Electrical Conductivity of $(ZrO_2)_x-(Tm_2O_3)_y$ System ($(ZrO_2)_x-(Tm_2O_3)_y$계의 전기전도도)

  • Electrical conductivities of $(ZrO_2)_x-(Tm_2O_3)_y$ systems containing 1, 3 and 5mol% of $ZrO_2$ have been measured as a function of temperature and of oxygen partial pressure at temperatures from 600 to 1,100$^{\circ}$C and oxygen partial pressures from $10^{-5}$ to $2{\times}10^{-1}atm$. Plots of log conductivity vs. 1/T are found to be linear and average activation energy is 1.51 eV. The electrical conductivity dependences on PO$_2$ are different at two temperature regions, indicating ${\sigma}{\alpha}PO_2^{1/5.3}$ and ${\sigma}{\alpha}PO_2^{1/10.7}$ at high-and low-temperature regions, respectively. The defect of $(ZrO_2)_x-(Tm_2O_3)_y$ system is $V_{Tm}^{'''}$ and an electron hole is suggested as a carrier at high temperature region. At low temperature region, a mixed ionic and hole conduction is reasonable.
