Selenium exists in various forms of chemical species. The activity and bioavailability is strongly dependent on its chemical form and concentration. Consequently the information on each selenium species and its concentration must be exactly determined for the food we take in. In this study, selenium species in seafood were separated and quantified by RP (reversed phase) HPLC (high performance liquid chromatography) coupled with ICP-MS (inductively coupled plasma mass spectrometry) using post-column isotope dilution. $^{79}Br$, which interferes on $^{80}Se$, has mostly been removed by solid phase extraction and then mathematical correction has been applied for the more accurate correction. The experimental result for CRM (certified reference material) DOLT-4 agreed well with the certified value but each selenium species could not be compared. SeCys (selenocysteine) and SeMet (selenomethionine) were the major species detected in seafood such as belt fish, spanish mackerel, and squid that have been serving as Korean diet. The concentrations found in Korean sea food for SeCys and SeMet were in the range of 0-661.6 mg/kg and 137.3-462.7 mg/kg, respectively.

A short reaction mechanism for premixed $CH_4$-air flames at high pressure was developed using a reduction method based on the combined application of the simulation error minimization connectivity method and the iterative species-removal sensitivity method. It consisted of 43 species and 554 elementary reactions under the condition that it produces less than 5% of the maximum error. The flame structures obtained using a detailed reaction mechanism and the short reaction mechanism were compared for $CH_4$-air flames with various initial temperatures and equivalence ratios at high pressure, and the results were in good agreement. Therefore, the short reaction mechanism developed could reproduce the flame speeds, temperatures, and concentrations of major and minor species at high pressure.
The chemical species formed by uranium and vanadium and their equilibria have been investigated in the various concentrations of oxalic and acetic acids by the ion exchange chromatography and UV-Vis spectrophotometry. Uranyl and vanadyl ions seem to be form the complex as $UO_2(C_2O_4)_2=$, $UO_2(C_2O_4)_3^{4-}$ and $VO_2(C_2O_4)-2^{3-}$ respectively in the concentration range of 0.005∼0.05M oxalic acid concentration. In the case of acetic acid the equilibria of $UO_2^{2+}+3Ac^-=UO_2(Ac)_3^-$ and $VO_2^++2Ac^-=VO_2(Ac)_2^-$ were existed individually according to the increase of acetic acid concentration.
To predict speciation of copper and cadmium in natural waters, the stability constant of complexes formed between copper or cadmium and natural organic ligands have been determined by the ion selective electrodes at pH 6. The stability constants for copper and cadmium, log $K'_{CuL} = 5.80\;and\;log K'_{CdL}=3.82$, were incorporated inot MINEQL computer program and prediction of chemical species of copper and cadmium in a model fresh water system was made by using this computer program. The natural organic ligands form complex with cupric ions at the concentration of $10^{-6}$ moles/l and with cadmium ions at the concentration of $10^{-5}$ moles/l. This result showed that prediction of chemical species of heavy metals in natural waters was not possible without taking into account the presence of the natural organic ligands.

The risk of climate change has been long acknowledged, and ongoing efforts to overcome this issue, within the shipping sector, with the international maritime organization playing a central role. Conducting research on characteristics of soot formation is crucial to control its occurrence within the combustion process. In this study, the laser extinction method and chemical reaction numerical analysis were employed to examine the alterations in the state of chemical species associated with flame temperature, flame visual, and soot formation by mixing nitrogen, an inert gas, in the counterflow diffusion flame based on ethylene gas. The findings of the study suggest that as the mixing ratio of nitrogen increased, both the flame temperature and soot volume fraction decreased. Additionally, the area in which soot particles were distributed also decreased, and the volume fraction decrease rate declined when the mixing ratio increased by more than 30%. The mole fraction of the chemical species involved in soot growth also decreased. the chemical species associated with the HACA reaction were affected by variations in the hydrocarbon fuel ratio, and the chemical species related to the odd carbon path were confirmed to be affected by the flame temperature as well as the hydrocarbon fuel ratio.
The purpose of this study was to analyze chemistry textbooks and teachers' guidebooks from the perspective of 'Ignorance', one of the important features of model. This is because the emphasis is on developing modeling capabilities for students in the 2015 Revised Curriculum. For this, Arrhenius model and Brønsted-Lowry model were selected as acid and base models in neutralization reaction which are important contents in chemistry curriculum. The analysis criteria of this study were extracted by analyzing previous studies and four general chemistry textbooks dealing with 'Ignorance' related to acid and base neutralization reaction. Based on the analysis criteria, we analyzed nine chemistry I textbooks and teacher's guides and six chemistry II textbooks and teacher's guides of the 2015 revised curriculum. In addition, we analyzed contents of four chemistry I textbooks and teacher's guides and three chemistry II textbooks and teacher's guides in the 2009 revised curriculum for comparison according to revised curriculums. We analyzed the contents related to the concept of 'neutralization reaction', 'neutrality', 'quantitative relation of neutralization reaction', 'degree of ionization', and 'ionization constant'. Based on the results of this study, we proposed a way to present 'Ignorance' of the models in teachers' guidebooks that chemistry teachers can understand 'Ignorance' of model and teach modeling capabilities for students.

BACKGROUND: Miscellaneous cereal have been largely consumed in Korea as due to their physiological functions beneficial to human health. The cereals are currently a social concern because they have been found to contain heavy metals. Thus, monitoring heavy metals in the cereals is an important requirement for food safety analysis. In this study, we determined arsenic concentration in the cereals randomly harvested from different markets. METHODS AND RESULTS: Inorganic arsenic was determined by ICP-MS coupled with HPLC system. The HPLC-ICP-MS analysis was optimized based on the limit of detection and recover test to reach $0.13-1.24{\mu}g/kg$ and 94.3-102.1%, respectively. The concentrations of inorganic arsenic equivalent to daily exposure were levels of $19.91{\mu}g/day$ in mixed grain, $1.07{\mu}g/day$ in glutinous rice, $0.77{\mu}g/day$ in black brown rice, $0.13{\mu}g/day$ in barley and $0.11{\mu}g/day$ in soybeans. CONCLUSION: The levels of arsenic in miscellaneous cereals were found lower than the recommended The Joint FAO/WHO Expert Committee on Food Additives (JECFA) levels, suggesting that the cereals marketed in Korea are not potential concern in risk assessment.
Magnesium (Mg) present in carbonate minerals as impurities has been used as a geochemical proxy to infer the environmental conditions where the minerals precipitated. The reliability of Mg geochemical proxies requires fundamental understanding of Mg incorporation into minerals based on accurate speciation of Mg 2+ in the crystal structure, which is determined mainly by application of X-ray absorption spectroscopy (XAS). However, high uncertainties are involved in interpreting the XAS spectra of minerals containing trace amount of Mg 2+. Because density function theory (DFT) can predict an XAS spectrum for a crystal structure, DFT calculations can reduce the uncertainties in the interpretation of the XAS spectrum. In this study, we calculated ab initio Mg K-edge absorption spectra of Mg silicates and (hydr)oxides based on DFT and analyzed the correlation between the calculated spectra and Mg structural parameters. Our ab initio Mg K-edge absorption spectra well reproduced the key features of the experimental spectra. The absorption-edge positions of the calculated spectra showed the weak positive correlation with the average Mg-O bond distance or Mg effective coordination number. The current study shows that DFT-based core-level spectroscopy method is a powerful tool in providing standard Mg K-edge spectra of diverse Mg minerals and determining the Mg chemical species within carbonate minerals.
In this research, the textbook contents related to the ionization degree of strong acid in water were analyzed from 1945 year syllabus to chemistry II textbook in 2009 revised curriculum. Fifty chemistry teachers' cognition related to the species of strong acid in water, and the relationship between the degree of ionization was surveyed by a questionnaire and interviews. As results, most of the teachers thought the species of strong acid in water based on the degree of ionization represented on the chemistry II textbooks. They didn't recognize the conflict of the degree of ionization and definition of strong acid on the textbooks, and then they awakened the conflict, they could not solve the problem.
