Removal of Chlorinated Organic Compounds in Flue Gas by Activated Carbon Injection in a Semi-Drying Reactor (반건식 반응기에서의 활성탄 혼합주입에 의한 소각로 배가스중의 유기 염소계 화합물의 제거 공정 연구)

  • There are several kinds of hazardous materials in incinerator flue gas, such as particulate matter, acid gas, heavy metal, dioxin, etc. The activated carbon adsorption is considered as one of the methods removing dioxin from flue gas. Without any additional equipment and facilities, the activated carbon was mixed with lime and sprayed in the semi-drying reactor of an incinerator and filtered in the bag filter, and its efficiency of removing hazardous organic material was investigated. 1,2-dichlorobenzene (o-DCB) was used as a precursor material of dioxin and the effects of the activated carbon amount, the operating temperature of the reactor, and the atomizer r.p.m were measured and analyzed. Experimental results showed that the optimum outlet temperature of the reactor was $145^{\circ}C$ considering the performance of the bag filter, and the adsorption performance improved with the increase of the atomizer r.p.m. Also the performance of removing o-DCB in the bag filter is higher than of the semi-drying reactor.

  • Due to the toxicity of dioxin in the incinerator flue gas, it becomes a severe social problem. Activated carbon adsorption process is one of the methods for removing dioxin in the flue gas and was investigated its performance for removing hazardous organic compounds. Since dioxin is very hazardous material, 1,2-dichlorobenzene(o-DCB), one of the precursor material of dioxin, was used as adsorbate. The effects of air flow rate, pressure drop in the bag filter, operation temperature of bag filter, and kinds of adsorbents on the removal of o-DCB were measured and analysed. Experimental results showed that the operating temperature was recommended within the range of $140{\sim}170^{\circ}C$ considering the operating condition of incinerator. Also it was necessary to maintain the pressure drop of bag filter $120mmH_2O$ for enhancing the adsorption at the surface layer of activated carbon formed on the bag filter. The use of mixture of same amount of activated carbon and diatomite showed more than 90% removal of o-DCB and also reduced the consumption of activated carbon.

  • $Li_4Sn_xTi_{5-x}O_{12}$ was manufactured by high energy ball milling (HEBM) and used as an anode material for lithium ion battery. Various amount of $SnO_2$was added to $Li_4Ti_5O_{12}$ and heated at different temperatures. The purpose of this research was to see the effect of $SnO_2$ addition into $Li_4Ti_5O_{12}$. Manufactured samples were analyzed by TGA, XRD, SEM, PSA. Battery cycler was used to test the charge/discharge properties of active materials. Heat treatment temperature of $800^{\circ}C$ was needed to make a stable structure of $Li_4Sn_xTi_{5-x}O_{12}$ and the particle size distribution was $0.2{\sim}0.6\;{\mu}m$. Charge/discharge process was repeated for 50 cycles at room temperature. The initial capacity was 168mAh/g and the voltage plateau was observed at 1.55V(Li/$Li^+$).

Analysis of Enantiomeric Composition of Chiral Flavor Components from Dried Ginger (Zingiber afficinale Roscoe) (건생강에 함유된 키랄성 향기성분의 이성질체 조성 분석)

  • The volatile compounds of Zingiber officinale Roscoe were extracted by simultaneous steam distillation and extraction (SDE) method and identified with gas chromatigraphy/mass spectrometer (GC/MS) analysis. Enantiomeric compositions of chiral compounds were determined by multidimensional gas chromatography/mass spectrometer (MDGC/MS). A total of 57 compounds were indentified and quantified, including zingiberene, ${\beta}-sesquiphellandrene$, ${\beta}-bisabolene$, $(E,E)-{\alpha}-farnesene$ and ${\alpha}-curcumene$. Among them, zingiberene (38.41%) was founds as the predominantly abundant component. ${\alpha}-Pinene$ and nerolidol in dried ginger were detected by high enantiomeric purity (>96%) for (S)-form, and ${\beta}-pinene$ was detected only (R)-form. The enantiomeric composition of ${\alpha}-terpineol$ revealed 72.0% for (R)-form, and linalool and 4-terpineol showed mixtures of both enantiomers. (S)-Enantiomer was the major enantiomer of limonene having enatiomeric excess of 17.2%. Hence the enantiomeric composition of these compounds can be used as parameter for authenticty control of Zingiber officinale.

A Scientific Analysis of Gold Threads Used in Donggungbi-Wonsam(Ceremonial Robe Worn by a Crown Princess, National Folklore Cultural Heritage No.48) (동궁비 원삼에 사용된 금사의 과학적 분석)

  • This study identified material properties through scientific analysis on Jikgeumdan(satin with gold threads) from Donggungbi-Wonsam and the gold threads used in the embroidery. The Donggungbi-Wonsam's base of gold threads were estimated to have used mulberry fiber's Korean paper(Hanji) because non-wood-based fibers were observed. The X-ray spectrometer showed that the Tongsuseulan of Donggungbi-Wonsam was a flat gold thread of pure gold and Jikgeumdan of flat silver thread of its Saekdong and Hansam. High sulfur levels were detected in the flat silver thread, which appeared to have formed silver sulfide by either manufacturing process using sulfur or conservation environment. he dragon insignia's embroidery is also described as two types twisted gold threads; pure gold and alloying-gold and silver. while dragon insignia's border line is decorated with a twisted gold thread of pure gold. In particular, it was investigated that adhesives such as an animal glue, a protein-based compound by gas chromatography mass spectrometry. Additionally, XRF and Raman spectroscopy analysis on the mixture substances between the metal surface and the base paper of gold threads identified talc and quartz in the gold threads and Seokganju(hematite) in the flat silver threads.

Analysis of Chemical Constituents of Agastachis Herba and in silico Investigation on Antidiabetic Target Proteins of its Major Compounds (곽향의 성분 분석 및 주요 성분들의 in silico 항당뇨 타겟 단백질 탐색)

  • Agastachis Herba (AH) to treat anorexia and nausea and its antidiabetic efficacy was recently reported. This study examined the antioxidant activities and chemical constituents of AH and predicted the target proteins of each compound using in silico approaches. The results showed that EC50 values of AH methanol extract for DPPH and ABTS radical scavenging were 78.6 ㎍/mL and 31.0 ㎍/mL, respectively. Compared to the EC50 values of ascorbic acid (9.9 ㎍/mL, 5.2 ㎍/mL), the AH methanol extract possessed excellent antioxidant activities. Rosmarinic acid, tilianin, agastachoside, and acetin were confirmed as the major compounds of extracts by qualitative analysis performed with HPLC-PDA-MS/MS. The antidiabetic target proteins of these compounds were predicted by applying a structural similarity and inverse docking methodology using a DIA-DB server. The resulting target proteins were PPAR-γ, DPP IV, glucokinase, α-glucosidase, SGLT2, aldose reductase, and corticosteroid 11-beta-dehydrogenase, some of which have already been proven experimentally as target proteins. Therefore, the in silico methods can be considered valid. Finally, AH were extracted with various solvents to determine the optimal conditions for the extraction of active components. Methanol among organic solvents and 80% ethanol in ethanol-water mixtures were identified as the most effective solvent for the extraction.

Combustion Characteristics of Bio Emulsion Fuel (바이오에멀젼 연료의 연소 특성)

  • Water soluble oil was obtained from the pyrolysis of coconut waste as a biomass at $600^{\circ}C$. It was studied that the combustion characteristics of bio-emulsion fuel by mixing and emulsifying 15~20% of water soluble oil which obtained from pyrolysis of coconut waste as a biomass and MDO(marine diesel oil) as a marine fuel. Engine dynamometer was used for detecting emissions, temperature, and power. The temperature of combustion chamber was decreased because the moisture in bio-emulsion fuel deprived of heat of evaporation in combustion chamber. While combustion, micro-explosion took place in the combustion chamber by water in the bio-emulsion fuel, MDO fuel scattered to micro particles and it caused to smoke reduction. The temperature reduction of combustion chamber by using bio-emulsion fuel reduced the NOx emission. The increasing of bio-oil content caused increasing water content in bio-emulsion fuel so total calorific value was reduced. So the characteristics of power was decreased in proportion to using the increasing amount of bio-emulsion fuel. Heavy oil as a marine fuel exhausts a lot of smoke and NOx. We expect that we can reduce the exhaust gas of marine engine such as smoke and NOx by using of bio-emulsion fuel as a marine fuel.

Measurement of flash point for binary mixtures of Ethanol, 1-propanol, 2-propanol and 2,2,4-trimethylpentane (Ethanol, 1-propanol, 2-propanol 그리고 2,2,4-trimethylpentane 이성분 혼합계에 대한 인화점 측정)

  • Flammable substances, such as organic solvents, are commonly used in laboratories and industrial processes. The flash point of flammable liquid mixtures is a very important parameter for characterizing the ignition and explosion hazards, and the flash points of mixtures of $C_2{\sim}C_3$ alcohols and 2,2,4-trimethylpentane were measured in the present study. The 2,2,4-trimethylpentane is an important component of gasoline and is frequently used in the petroleum industry as a solvent. Lower flash point data were measured for the binary systems {ethanol + 2,2,4-trimethylpentane}, {1-propanol + 2,2,4-trimethylpentane}, and {2-propanol + 2,2,4-trimethylpentane}. The flash point measurements were carried out according to the standard test method (ASTM D3278) using a Stanhope-Seta closed cup flash point tester. The measured flash points were compared with the predicted values calculated using Raoult's law and also following $G^E$ models: Wilson, Non-Random Two Liquid (NRTL) and UNIversal QUAsiChemical (UNIQUAC). These models were able to predict the experimental flash points for different compositions of {$C_2{\sim}C_3$ alcohols + 2,2,4-trimethylpentane} mixtures with minimal deviations. The average absolute deviation between the predicted and measured lower flash point was less than 1.28 K. A minimum flash point behaviour was observed in all of the systems as in the many observed cases for the hydrocarbon and alcohol mixtures.

Anti-inflammatory effects of ethyl acetate fraction of unripe astringent persimmon (Diospyros kaki Thunb. cv. Cheongdo-Bansi) on lipopolysaccharide-stimulated RAW 264.7 cells (지방질다당류로 자극한 RAW 264.7 세포에서 청도반시 땡감 에틸 아세테이트 분획물의 항염증 효과)

  • Unripe astringent persimmon (Diospyros kaki Thunb. cv. Cheongdo-Bansi) is a by-product produced when thinning out the superfluous fruit of persimmon. We investigated whether unripe astringent persimmon has antioxidative and anti-inflammatory effects. Unripe astringent persimmon extract was fractionated sequentially in n-hexane, chloroform, ethyl acetate, n-butanol, and water. The ethyl acetate fraction had the highest total phenolic content, total flavonoid content, and antioxidant capacity compared to those of the other fractions. Pretreatment of lipopolysaccharide-stimulated RAW 264.7 macrophages with the ethyl acetate fraction reduced nitric oxide, interleukin-6, and intracellular oxidative stress in a dose-dependent manner. Ultra-high-performance liquid chromatography-electrospray ionization-tandem mass spectrometry analysis revealed gallic acid, protocatechuic acid, 4-hydroxybenzoic acid, quercetin-3-O-glucoside, quercetin, and p-coumaric acid as the phenolic compounds of the ethyl acetate fraction. Collectively, these findings suggest that unripe astringent persimmon is a source of functional materials that can promote antioxidative and anti-inflammatory effects.

A Scientific Analysis of Pigments for A Scroll Painting in Daeungjeon Hall of Bulguk Temple (불국사 대웅전 석가모니후불탱화 안료의 과학적 분석)

  • Pigments used paintings, ornaments, weapons and various objects have been recognised as important elements to ascertain the history, manufacturing technique and cultural migration. Since the understanding of composition of pigments by analysis began in 1963, its technique and methodology has much advanced in recent years; recent study used the portable X-ray Fluorescence as non-destructive analysis has been practiced in particular. However the study on pigments necessitates overall and systematic research because it is difficult to understand periodical and regional use of pigments. by fractional studies. Therefore this research investigates the coloring materials and painting techniques of the scroll painting depicting preaching scene of Sakyamuni Buddha in Daeungjeon Hall, a main hall of Bulguk temple, through scientific analysis and comparison of various pigments which had been applied to the buddhist paintings of Joseon Dynasty. Consequently, it is confirmed that the scroll painting used pigments of white lead[$2PbCO_3{\cdot}Pb(OH)_2$] for ground layer and used mixture of different pigments such as cinnabar (HgS) minium($Pb_3O_4$) malachite($2CuO{\cdot}CO_2{\cdot}H_2O$) hematite($Fe_2O_3$) gold(Ag) for presenting various colors on the painting layer. It has been also believed that mineral pigments were applied to the scroll painting, yet it is difficult to confirm whether it is natural or synthetic pigments because the crystal structures of pigments were not analyzed. The results of this study, however, provide useful reference data for the understanding of the components of pigments and manufacturing techniques of buddhist scroll paintings, in particular, of Joseon Dynasty.
