Connectedness of the dry bulk carrier market before and after COVID-19 (COVID-19 전후의 건화물선 시장의 연계성)

  • This study analyzed the connectivity of the dry bulk carrier market before and after COVID-19 to examine the impact of COVID-19 on the global shipping market. Using the Quantile Time Frequency Connectedness methodology, we analyzed the dynamic connectedness of major dry bulk indices: the Capesize Index (BCI), Supramax Index (BSI), Panamax Index (BPI), and Handysize Index (BHSI). The results are as follows. First, the total spillover connectedness of the dry bulk carrier market increased during the entire period and in the short term after the outbreak of COVID-19, while it slightly decreased in the long term. Second, the roles among the indices changed according to market conditions, with COVID-19 causing the BPI to change from a net receiver to a net transmitter in the short term and the BSI in the long term, affecting net spillover connectedness. Third, it was observed that long-term connectivity tended to increase more than short-term connectedness under extreme conditions. Fourth, the phenomenon of strengthened connectedness under extreme market conditions was confirmed. These results provide important insights into understanding short-term market shocks and long-term stability trends, demonstrating that the connectedness among dry bulk carrier markets strengthens in global crisis situations such as COVID-19. This provides a basis for assessing the resilience and vulnerability of the shipping market and offers useful information for investors and policymakers in crisis management and investment strategy formulation.

Port's Successful Global Supply Chain Strategies - Focusing on the case of Dubai port - (항만의 성공적인 글로벌 공급사슬 전략 - 두바이항의 사례를 중심으로 -)

  • Today's individual firms no longer compete as solely autonomous entities, but rather as supply chain. As such the competitive position of a port is not only determined by its internal strengths but also it is also affected by its links in a global supply chin. In other words, port competitiveness is becoming increasingly dependent on external coordination and control of the whole supply chain. The main purpose of this paper is to examine how a port embeds itself into supply chain in order to strengthen its competitive position by focusing on Dubai port case. This paper found that Dubai port used three phases-insertion, integration and dominance-as a strategies for how it can embedded into global supply chain successfully. Dubai's global supply chain strategies give some implications for the further development of the Port of Gwangyang. First, the Port of Gwangyang should fully utilize symbiotic relationship with Gwangyang free Economic Zone. Second, the integration between Korea Container Terminal Authority and GYFEZ can be recommended for fast decision-making and providing a one-stop-service. Finally, Gwangyang should pursue an aggressive supply chain strategy, aims at dominance in the regional port network through port alliance with small and medium ports in neighboring area.

Strategies for Attracting Passengers to Daesan International Passenger Terminal (국제여객터미널의 집객전략: 서산 대산항을 중심으로)

  • With an increases in income levels and the establishment of a five-day workweek, the number of passengers using international passenger terminals around the world continues to grow every year. However, previous researches on port sector have focused on cargo, and neglected the study on the passenger attraction strategy of the international passenger terminal. Maximizing passenger attraction strategy of the international passenger terminal requires establishing and operating the port marketing strategy, which reflects port characteristics and the tourism marketing strategy, which reflects the hinterland characteristics in an integrated approach. Therefore, the study presents a marketing mix strategy for Daesan International Passenger Terminal based on existing literatures, and a tourism marketing strategy for Seosan city based on the "6A" factor. Recommendations for the Daesan Port include the grand image improvement strategy of Seosan city, utilization of marine tourism resources and development of various tourism products linked to the neighboring areas.

  • 세계 선진항만은 해운물류시장의 변화에 대응하고, 경쟁력 확보 방안으로 첨단 자동화 장비와 운영시스템 도입을 통한 자동화를 지향하고 있다. 국내 부산항 신항 또한 자동화 컨테이너터미널로 개발을 추진하고 있는 것으로 알려져 있다. 자동화 터미널은 각종 자동화 장비와 시스템이 유기적으로 구성되어 있으며, 이들의 효율적인 운영을 통해 생산성을 향상시킬 수 있다. 터미널의 안벽과 장치장 사이의 컨테이너 운송을 담당하는 이송장비는 컨테이너터미널의 핵심장비로 이의 효율적인 운영은 컨테이너터미널의 생산성과 직결되어 있다. 본 연구에서는 자동화 컨테이너터미널의 운영생산성 향상을 위한 하역장비와 이송장비의 운영방안에 대하여 연구한다. 특히 DHST(Dual Hoist Second Trolley)타입의 QC와 ASHC의 장비특성과 장비간의 연계작업을 고려하여, QC의 대기시간을 최소화하여 하역 생산성을 최대화할 수 있는 ASHC Dispatching Rule을 제시하고자 한다.

  • This study is to define the Automated Container Terminal(ACT) and container terminal system. Also, we analyze the present condition of the container terminal system in Pusan port and its automation level by systems approach. And this paper aims at evaluating on the priority of R&D investment until the beginning of the second stage of New Pusan Port Project(2006). In this process we have considered 8 factors (cost, labor, area, time volume, reliability, safety, convenience) to analyze 6 subsystems. The priority order of R&D until target year by sub-systems is as follow : Cargo Handling System〉Transfer System〉Port Entry System〉Storage System(Distribution&Manufacturing System included)〉Inland Transport System〉Port Information System.

  • 해상교통관제시스템의 발달로 과거에 비하여 해상교통의 안전과 항만의 효율성은 크게 향상되었다. 이러한 관제설비는 유기적으로 상호 연동 공유되어야 관제사에게 정보를 효과적으로 제공해 줄 수 있다. 관제장비의 증가는 여러 정보를 수집할 수 있다는 면에서는 긍정적이만 점차 다양해지는 장비로 관제사의 업무량도 증가하기 마련이다. 따라서 여러 관제장비를 상호 연동하고 통합하고 그러한 정보를 활용할 수 있는 시스템이 필요할 것이다. 본 연구에서는 관제사의 업무를 효과적으로 지원해 줄 수 있고 정보를 지속적으로 기록 관리하여 이 정보를 활용할 수 있는 선박안전종합관리시스템의 개발방안을 모색하여 보았다.

Economic Analysis on Inter-Connected System of Port Transport and In-land Transportation -A Container Cargo Transport Oriented- (부산항 항만 운송과 육상 교통 연계시스템에 관한 경제성 분석 -컨테이너 화물 운송을 중심으로-)

  • In this study, to identify the ineffectiveness of inter-connected system of cargo volume between the Pusan Port and inland areas and also to make more rational suggestions, the following conclusions were drawn by analyzing Container Cargo Traffic from BCTOC to Off-Dock CY: 1. There existed about 30% to 50% reduction in the container transport times when the container transport vehicles were operated during the off-peak period to alleviate the traffic congestion due to mixed traffic. 2. There appeared to be more economic when Off-Dock DY's scattered around the City of Pusan were unified in one ODCY Unit at YangSan, and the Exclusive Overpass Freeway System for the container transport vehicles were constructed and operated on the existing Urban Freeway from BCTOC ti this ODCY Unit (Expected to make about 230 billions Won in net present value by NPV method).

  • As the quantity of goods transported, port industry and inland transport industry have developing to transport 630million ton goods annually. And the inland transport industry consists of ground transport for almost 80% of total transported goods. But, ground transport causes some serious problems especially the emission of greenhouse gases from trucks. According to issue "global warming", many regulations and agreements with countries in the world are becoming necessary and it is being fulfilled now. It is sure that Korea will have duty to reduce CO2 emission from 2013. Thus inland transport must cut off CO2 emission level. Therefore this paper will address that the calculation of CO2 emission under route of transportation container from six major container ports in Korea. And then, it will predict CO2 emission of inland transport industry according to increasing container traffic rate at ports.

  • The container ports have been increasingly changed according to the industry structure and differentiated customer's needs. So it seems to need the differentiated service strategies to have their competitiveness. To assess the customer requirements objectively, this paper associated the service process of container ports with the service quality scale by using the Quality Function Development(QFD). This paper analysed the service process of Busan port and then compared it with those of Shanghai port and Tokyo port which are the typical port of the northeast asia. Also, after drawing the importance of the service process as well as its priorities by representing the relation between service quality scale and processes of the container ports, this paper proposed the House of Quality(HOQ) for service quality improvements.

A Sutdy of VTS Simulator Development using port specified scenario technology (항만별 맞춤 시나리오 생성기술을 적용한 VTS시뮬레이터 개발에 관한 연구)

  • In the past, the scenario of VTS simulator was made by instructor's manual operation using waypoint definition of target ship. but in this study, we use automatic scenario creation technology with AIS data and Port-MIS data. The created VTS simaulator scenario also can be modified, added, and saved by instructor's manual operation. VTS simulator display target ship on the Electronic Navigation Chart based on S-57 format. A instructor can easily open this scenario and start, pause, stop operation wirth VTS simulator. A new modification also can be applied immediately to current scenario and can be saved new scenario file. VTS simulator using this technology can create many scenarios for a specific purpose and can be easily used for various application fields.
