In the vacuum assisted RTM (VARTM) process that has become the center of attention for manufacturing massive composite structures, a good evacuation of air in the fiber preform is recognized as the prime factor. The microvoids, or the dry spots, are formed as a result of improper gate/vent locations and the mold geometry. The non-uniform resin velocity at the flow front leads to the formation of microvoids in the fibers, whereas the air in the microvoids can migrate along with the resin flow during mold filling. The residual air in the internal voids of a composite structure may cause a degradation of the mechanical properties as well as the structural failure. In this study, a unified macro- and micro analysis methods were developed to investigate the formation and transport of air in resin during VARTM process. A numerical simulation program was developed to analyze the three-dimensional flow pattern as well as the macro- and microscopic distribution of air in a composite part fabricated by VARTM process.

The change in the open porosity of bulk graphite as a function of the uniaxial molding pressure during manufacturing is studied using artificial graphite powder. Subsequently, the graphite is impregnated to determine the effect of the open porosity on the impregnation efficiency and to improve the density of the final bulk graphite. Bulk graphite is manufactured with different uniaxial molding pressures after mixing graphite powder, which is the by-product of processing the final graphite products and phenolic resin. The bulk density and open porosity are measured using the Archimedes method. The bulk density and open porosity of bulk graphite increase as the molding pressure increases. The open porosity of molded bulk graphite is 25.35% at 30 MPa and 29.84% at 300 MPa. It is confirmed that the impregnation efficiency increases when the impregnation process is performed on a specimen with large open porosity. In this study, the bulk density of bulk graphite molded at 300 MPa is 11.06% higher than that before impregnation, which is the highest reported increase. Therefore, it is expected that the higher the uniaxial pressure, the higher the density of bulk graphite.
Pores produced by carbonization in bulk graphite process degrade the mechanical and electrical properties of bulk graphite. Therefore, the pores of bulk graphite must be reduced and an impregnation process needs to be performed for this reason. In this study, bulk graphite is impregnated by varying the viscosity of the impregnant. The pore volume and pore size distribution, according to the viscosity of the impregnant, are analyzed using a porosimeter. The total pore volume of bulk graphite is analyzed from the cumulative amount of mercury penetrated. The volume for a specific pore size is interpreted as the amount of mercury penetrating into that pore size. This decreases the cumulative amount of mercury penetrating into the recarbonized bulk graphite after impregnation because the viscosity of the impregnant is lower. The cumulative amount of mercury penetrating into bulk graphite before impregnation and after three times of impregnation with 5.1cP are 0.144 mL/g and 0.125 mL/gm, respectively. Therefore, it is confirmed that the impregnant filled the pores of the bulk graphite well. In this study, the impregnant with 5.1 cP, which is the lowest viscosity, shows the best effect for reducing the total pore volume. In addition, it is confirmed by Raman analysis that the impregnant is filled inside the pores. It is confirmed that phenolic resin, the impregnant, exists inside the pores through micro-Raman analysis from the inside of the pore to the outside.
Since the residual stress of hydrogen tank is directly related to durability, it is very important to reduce it for safety. Type II~IV hydrogen tank are manufactured by the filament winding method, in which the fiber is impregnated with resin and wound around the liner. Residual stress in composite is affected by curing conditions and fiber tension etc. In this study, the effect of curing conditions on residual stress was analyzed when manufacturing a Type III hydrogen tank using carbon fiber filament winding process. First, the curing behavior of the epoxy resin was analyzed using a differential scanning calorimetry. Through this, the curing temperature was set to 140℃. During the same curing time, the specimens were cured under 2-stage curing condition that reached 140℃ earlier and a 4-stage curing condition that reached 140℃ later, respectively. After curing, the residual stress of the composite material was measured by the ring slitting method, and the experimental values were compared with numerical values. It was confirmed that there was a significant difference in residual stress according to the optimization of curing conditions.

Fire protection countermeasure were considered on the straw thatched roof and wooden structure. For the fire resistant treatment, rice straw was soaked in the fire resistant liquid with different soaking time. After treatment, some rice straw sample was washed with water then the rice straws were tested to check the fire resistance performance. And the wood was soaked in the fire resistant liquid at an atmospheric pressure, vacuum-pressure condition and painted with brush on the surface. To analyse the fire resistant performance of rice straw, ignition delay time was measured under the radiant heat flux of cone heater. And the fire resistant performance of wood samples were tested with 45 degree fire resistant test apparatus and cone heater. Based on the cone heater test, the rice straw which most easily ignitable material shows the longer ignition delay time than not treated ones and even in the water washed straw show a longer ignition delay time than not treated ones. And fire resistant treated woods of vacuum-pressure treated sample showed the most excellent performance on fire resistance. And the fire resistant treated by brush and soaking showed a longer ignition delay time than not treated ones. From this experiment, it was found that a fire resistant treatment of rice straw and wood of the house can be protected from the fire spread.

Silicon carbide is considered to be a potentially useful material for high-temperature electronic devices, as its large energy band gap and the p-type and/or n-type conduction can be controlled by impurity doping. Particularly, electric conductivity of porous n-type SiC semiconductors fabricated from ${\beta}-SiC$ powder at $2000^{\circ}C$ in $N_2$ atmosphere was comparable to or even larger than the reported values of SiC single crystals in the temperature region of $800^{\circ}C$ to $1000^{\circ}C$, while thermal conductivity was kept as low as 1/10 to 1/30 of that for a dense SiC ceramics. In this work, for the purpose of decreasing sintering temperature, it was attempted to fabricate porous reaction-sintered bodies at low temperatures ($1400-1600^{\circ}C$) by thermal decomposition of polycarbosilane (PCS) impregnated in n-type ${\beta}-SiC$ powder. The repetition of the impregnation and sintering process ($N_2$ atmosphere, $1600^{\circ}C$, 3h) resulted in only a slight increase in the relative density but in a great improvement in the Seebeck coefficient and electrical conductivity. However the power factor which reflects the thermoelectric conversion efficiency of the present work is 1 to 2 orders of magnitude lower than that of the porous SiC semiconductors fabricated by conventional sintering at high temperature, it can be stated that thermoelectric properties of SiC semiconductors fabricated by the present reaction-sintering process could be further improved by precise control of microstructure and carrier density.

In this study, we study fabrication methods suitable for CNT fibers-based composite. We try to fabricate a composite material using a small amount of CNT fiber preparation of woven fabrics or stitched unidirectional fabrics consisting of CNT fiber is not achievable currently. The composite materials on the basis of CNT fibers have been mainly manufactured filament winding method due to productivity issues and difficulties in composite processes. We develop a new method to prepare CNT fibers-based composite using resin infiltrated CNT fibers-based films. Because CNT fibers have numerous nanopores inside, unnecessary resin can remain after curing and decrease the mechanical properties of the composites. To remove the excess resin, pressure should be applied during the process, but the pressure applied through VaRTM was not enough to remove the excess resin. To obtain the composite with high ratio of CNT fibers, higher pressure using hot press machine and foams next to the resin-infiltrated CNT fibers are necessary. We can obtain the composite having a mass ratio of 58.5 wt% based on the new suggested method and diluted epoxy. The specific strength of the composite reach 0.525 N/tex. This study presents a new process method that can be applied to the manufacturing of CNT fiber composite materials in the future.
This study seeks to develop a stretch sensor for measuring the wrist movements of people using fishing lures. In order to confirm wrist movement, a stretch sensor was attached to the wrist band, and measurements of the dorsiflexion, plantar flexion, and fishing landing motion were measured using a scale to gauge factor, tensile strength, and elongation recovery rate. A conductive sensor using CNT dispersion was developed and applied to the E-band under the same conditions. A total of 15 sensors of the same size and five types of impregnation once, twice, and three times each were used to measure the gauge factor using UTM. The sensor that was impregnated twice had the best gauge rate, and the prototypes were manufactured with three sensors with high gauge rates and tensile strength. The results of the operation test conducted by connecting to the Arduino showed that Sample 1, which had the highest tensile strength and gauge factor, had a stable graph wavelength in three operations. Samples 2 and 3 showed stable wavelengths in the dorsiflexion and the plantar flexion; however, signal noise appeared in the fishing landing motion. This showed stable wavelengths in the two motions, but the wavelengths of the graphs differ depending on the tensile strength and gauge factor in the fishing landing motion. As a result, it was possible to identify the conditions necessary for manufacturing a stretch sensor for measuring wrist movement. This study will contribute to the development of smart wearable products for lure fishing.
Dispersion and self-sensing evaluation for single-carbon fiber reinforced in three different acid-treated CNT-epoxy nanocomposites were investigated by electro-micromechanical techniques and wettability tests. Self-sensing based on contact resistivity exhibited more noise for single carbon fiber/acid-treated CNT-epoxy composites than it did for untreated CNT. However, the apparent modulus was higher the acid treated case than the untreated case which is attributed to better stress transfer. The interfacial shear strength (IFSS) between carbon fibers and the CNT-epoxy was lower than that between carbon fiber and neat epoxy due to the increased viscosity associated with the addition of the CNT. The CNT-epoxy nanocomposite exhibited more hydrophobicity than did neat epoxy. Change in the thermodynamic work of adhesion was consistent with changes in the IFSS but disproportional to that of the apparent modulus. The optimum condition of acid treatment on the need can be obtained instead of the maximum condition.
