  • 우리 사람들은 자신의 생각을 다른 사람들에게 전하고자 할 때 언어를 주로 이용하고 보조적인 수단으로 몸짓을 한다. 사용하는 언어가 달라 소통이 어려울 때는 부득이 몸짓으로만 서로 의견을 나누게 되는데 손짓과 발짓은 물론 얼굴의 표정까지 동원된다. 물론 언어를 이용한 의사전달 만큼 정확하지도 못하고 시간적으로도 효율적이지 못하지만 그런 대로 급한 문제는 해결할 수 있는 경우가 않다. 동물들이 서로의 의사소통을 위하여 어떤 형태의 언어 및 언어에 가까운 음성기호를 이용할 능력이 있는지에 대하여는 학자들 간에도 논란이 계속되고 있으나 분명한 것은 어떤 방법으로든 동물들도 제나름대로 자신의 의사를 전달하고 또한 상대편이 전하고자 하는 뜻을 파악하여 이에 적절히 대처를 한다는 점이다. 이런 점에서 동물들을 대상으로 하는 학문인 수의분야에서는 우리 인간들에게 익숙한 언어와 행동이 아닌 동물들의 독특한 의사전달 방법을 정확히 이해하는 것이 무엇보다도 중요하다는 점을 인식하는 것이 필요하다 동물의 행동 하나 하나는 인간의 행동과 마찬가지로 나름대로의 의미를 지니고 있다. 이러한 동물의 행동을 인간의 눈 높이에서가 아닌 동물이 표현하고자 하는 행동 언어적인 측면에서의 이해가 필요한 것이다. 야생동물의 행동양식에 대한 연구는 생래학적으로 비교적 많이 이루어진 편이나 가축화된 동물들에 대하여는 체계적이고 비교학적인 연구가 아직도 부족한 실정이다. 특히 우리 나라에서는 이 분야에 대한 연구는 물론 외국의 연구내용에 대하여도 적극적인 소개가 이루어지지 못하였고 아울러 여러 분야에 실제 적용은 더욱 어려웠다. 동물의 건강을 책임지고 있는 우리 수의 분야는 물론, 가축을 사양하는 축산학 분야 및 모든 동물관련 분야에서 효율적이고 바람직한 동물과 인간의 관계를 구축하기 위하여는 무엇보다도 동물의 행동을 인간의 언어사용 측면에서 이해하려는 노력이 필요하다 하겠다. 이러한 일차적인 필요성에 조금이나마 도움이 되고자 하는 바람으로 외국문헌을 중심으로 인간의 생활과 밀접한 관계를 지닌 여러 동물들의 행동과 그 의미를 소개하고자 한다. 아울러, 소개되는 내용은 Domestic Animal Behavior for Veterinarians and Animal Scientists (제3판, Katherine A. Houpt 지음), Animal Behavior (Tim Halliday 지음), Canine and Feline Behavior Problems(Stefanie Schwartz 지음), Journal of Conpendium on Continuing Education for the Practicing Veterinarian,그리고The Merck Veterinary Manual의 Behavior와 같은 참고문헌에 크게 의존하여 기술된 것임을 밝힌다.

A Historical Study on the Continuity of Function - Focusing on Aristotle's Concept of Continuity and the Arithmetization of Analysis - (함수의 연속성에 대한 역사적 고찰 - 아리스토텔레스의 연속 개념과 해석학의 산술화 과정을 중심으로 -)

  • This study investigated the Aristotle's continuity and the historical development of continuity of function to explore the differences between the concepts of mathematics and students' thinking about continuity of functions. Aristotle, who sought the essence of continuity, characterized continuity as an 'indivisible unit as a whole.' Before the nineteenth century, mathematicians considered the continuity of functions based on space, and after the arithmetization of nineteenth century modern ${\epsilon}-{\delta}$ definition appeared. Some scholars thought the process was revolutionary. Students tended to think of the continuity of functions similar to that of Aristotle and mathematicians before the arithmetization, and it is inappropriate to regard students' conceptions simply as errors. This study on the continuity of functions examined that some conceptions which have been perceived as misconceptions of students could be viewed as paradigmatic thoughts rather than as errors.

Hilbert's Program as Research Program (연구 프로그램으로서의 힐버트 계획)

  • The development of recent Mathematical Logic is mostly originated in Hilbert's Proof Theory. The purpose of the plan so called Hilbert's Program lies in the formalization of mathematics by formal axiomatic method, rescuing classical mathematics by means of verifying completeness and consistency of the formal system and solidifying the foundations of mathematics. In 1931, the completeness encounters crisis by the existence of undecidable proposition through the 1st Theorem of G?del, and the establishment of consistency faces a risk of invalidation by the 2nd Theorem. However, relative of partial realization of Hilbert's Program still exists as a fruitful research program. We have tried to bring into relief through Curry-Howard Correspondence the fact that Hilbert's program serves as source of power for the growth of mathematical constructivism today. That proof in natural deduction is in truth equivalent to computer program has allowed the formalization of mathematics to be seen in new light. In other words, Hilbert's program conforms best to the concept of algorithm, the central idea in computer science.

International Collaboration in the Age of Digital Technologies : Focusing on the 10 East-Asian Countries (디지털 테크놀로지 시대의 국제 협동연구 : 동아시아 지역의 분석을 중심으로)

  • The purpose of this paper is to examine some aspects of international collaboration in the age of digital technologies. First, the paper describes the longitudinal structure of collaborative pattern among the 10 East-Asian countries based on their frequency of co-authoring SCI journal articles in the year 2001-2003. Second, a focus interview was made to explore the way in which new digital technologies such as the Internet have changed a research practice in the field of science, technology, and innovation. This research found that Japan and China are preferred as the number one collaborator by other Asian countries. Their share of international collaboration with other Asian countries has been increasing in three years. The results of indepth interview with a scholar suggest that digital network technologies have several advantages enabling individual and institutional actors to collaborate with each other effectively in terms of knowledge management as well as information exchange.

A Study on the Research Support Service of College Libraries (대학도서관의 연구지원서비스에 관한 연구)

  • This research defines research support service, and compares the support service provided by college libraries in Korea and overseas. The findings showed that the frequency of college library service in Korean schools were low. Korean college libraries' services were mostly limited to the services of a normal library such as bibliographic education, full text service, and interlibrary loan service. To put it differently, Korean college libraries lacked information services on research ethics. Research spot services per research stage were mostly restricted to the data collection stage, and deficient elsewhere. On the other hand, college libraries in the U.S. were providing a platform for scholarly communication between researcher and scholars via websites.

  • The objective of this research was to test a hypothesis that sprawl increases congestion, and so the estimated evacuation time become longer. For this, sprawl was thought to be poor accessibility so that vehicle miles of travel become longer. This research shows that the daily vehicle miles per lane mile that are thought to be an accessibility index had a strong and statistically significant relationship to the estimated evacuation time, while urban population density has no statistically significant relationship to the evacuation time. The result of this research recommends that we should consider sustainable land use patterns that decrease traffic demand by providing good accessibility.

  • The Greek sculptor, Pygmalion, created a sculpture which was perfect in shape and fell in love with it. He prayed the goddess of love, Venus to transform it into a real woman. She answered his asking, and he finally got married to her. In Bernard Shaw's movie, , the linguist, Dr. Higgins, brought a street girl, Eliza Doolittle to his home and educated her standard London dialect and upper-class manners. Unlike the Greek sculptor, Higgins changed not only her appearance but also her inner identity, then she became 'a new woman' of the age. Abby in seems to live a successful life of thorough planning and pursuing knowledge, but there is no place for her to express natural instinct and human emotion. On the other hand, Mike is a totally different type of a person from her. Like a Greek sculptor, he changes her into a woman who can truly understand other people from her heart and listen to what her inner-self says to her. The Greek myth metaphorically suggests the way to build true relationships between people of all times.

  • Though tungsten minerals have been mined for over fifty years in Korea, which has become one of the worlds largest tungsten producers since 1951, knowledge of their mineralogy and geochemistry is somewhat limited to the school of tungsten students. There is a considerable amount of literature throughout the world on the tungsten mineralogy, the geochemical behaviour of tungsten, the nature of tungsten deposits and geological environments for tungsten mineralisation. Commonly known tungsten minerals such as scheelite and wolframite belong to one of two series, the scheelite or the wolframite series, as the primary tungsten minerals. Secondary tungsten minerals are known rather rare, however, some of them plays an important role-of exploration guide in search for tungsten deposits. The geochemistry of tungsten is imperfectly known, and apparently the behaviour of tungsten in geological processes has been the subject of few studies. Recently, some aspects of the fundamental geochemistry of tungsten has been worked out and compiled the data in broad the up to date by many authors. In order to facilitate the better understanding and future exploration of tungsten deposits, an attempt has been made to summarise the existing knowledge of the fundamental geochemistry of tungsten, together with its common geochemical association with various types of tungsten deposits.

An Evaluation of Water Use Efficiency and Energy Requirements for Wetland Tillage (답작의 효율적 경운정지 방법에 관한 연구)

  • 수자원과 에너지는 식량 생산에 직접 간접으로 큰 영향을 미치고 있으며 또한 1973년 에너지 위기 이후 농업에 사용된 에너지가 효율적으로 사용되었는가에 대한 연구는 농공학자들의 큰 관심이 되어왔다. 본 연구는 필리핀의 수작농업에 있어서 경운정지시 관개에 따른 토양경도의 변화와 , 토양경도와 연료소모율과의 관계를 구명하고, 에너지와 관개수의 효율적인 이용을 연구하고저 건기와 우기에 각각 수행되었으며 그의 결과를 요약하면 다음과 같다. 가. 건기 1) 관개시작후 1-2일간 토양의 수분함량이 증가함에 다라 토양의 경도는 급격히 감소하였으며, 관개 3일째는 온난한 감소를 ,그리고 4일째부터는 거의 변화가 없었다. 2) 토양의 경도에 따라 경운작업시 연료감소율, 기계의 작업성능에 큰 차가 있었으며 , 관개 3일후 토양의 수분함량과 토양의 경도가 안정됨에 따라 각 처리간의 연료의 소모율과 기계의 작업성능도 비슷하였다. 3) IRRI 5 Hp 경운기는 관개수로 인해 경도가 낮아진 토양에서도 이동성 문제가 없을 만큼 충분히 경량이었다. 4) 관개수의 양의 따라 처리별로 경운전 토양의 전단력에 큰 차가 있었으나 , 경운정지작업후의 토양전단력은 전처리에 있어서 거의 비슷하였다. 이는 경운정지작업시 처리간의 연료소모율, 기계의 작업성능의 차로 설명될 수 있다. 5) 경운정지시의 토양상태는 식물의 생육, 잡초의 발생율에 거의 영향을 미치지 않았다. 6) 본 실험은 한가지 토양형식에 대해 수행되었으며 앞으로 여러 토양형식에 대해 이와 같은실험을 수행하여 토양형식에 따른 수분함량, 토양경도, 에너지 소모율들의 관계를 구명하여 관개수의 효율적인 이용이 가능하리라 사료된다. 나. 우기 1) 경운작업전에 이미 토양이 수분으로 포함되어 있는 상태이었으므로, 추가의 관개수가 토양의 경도, 기계의 작업성능, 연료소모율에 영향을 미치지 않았다. 2) 경운정지기간이 가장 짧았던 처리구(3일) 에 있어서 경운정지후 토양전단력이 다른 3 처리에 비해 크게 나타났다. 식물의 생육 또한 타처리에 비해 저조했으며 잡초발생율도 높았다. 3) 경운정지기간이 가장 짧았던 처리구(3일)을 제외한 3처리 간에는 연료소모율, 식물생육, 잡초발생율등이 거의 비슷하였으며, 우기에는 위의 3 처리 중 11 간의 경운정지기간이 가장 효율적인 것으로 나타났다.

Detection and Analysis of the Artificial Underground Explosions in N. Korea using KSRS data. (KSRS 자료를 이용해서 북한의 인공지하폭발의 탐지 및 분석)

  • The discrimination studies between earthquakes and underground nuclear explosions have been carried out by various seismologists(Nuttli and Kim, 1976; Dahiman and Israelson, 1977; Masse, 1981). The discrimination between local microearthquakes and artificial underground explosions(epicentral distance not greater than 400Km), however, has not been actively studied so far in the light of seismological aspects. Futhermore this kind of research has never been performed in Korea even if it is of great importance for IAEA (International Atomic Energy Agency) to clearly analyze the military nuclear power of North Korea at present. This research has been carried out by using some of the artificial underground explosions(about 100 events) have occurred in North Korea for the last six years. The azimuths, apparent incidence angles, epicentral distances and locations are determined using a single station of 3 - component data. The detection, location and identification are performed through the polarization and the bandpass filtering. This technique can be also applied to study the inhomogeneous crustal structure finding the converted waves.
