This study is a secondary data analysis study using the 1st Panel Survey of School Dropouts in Korea for investigating predictors of suicide attempts in out-of-school youths (OSYs). Data analysis were performed using the SPSS 26.0 statistical program. Suicide attempts were reported in 62 (8%) of the 776 participants included in the study. Logistic regression analysis revealed that suicide attempts before school dropout (OR=10.66), experience of violence victimization (OR=6.97), alcohol consumption (OR=3.73), depression (OR=2.62), parental attachment (OR=0.47), peer relationships (OR=0.63) before school dropout were significant predictors of suicide attempts. Prevention of suicide attempts by OSYs should be preceded by confirmation of their experience in suicide attempts before school dropout. In addition, it is required to establish a suicide prevention program considering psychological situations, interpersonal relationships, and violence experiences.
The purpose of this study was to analyze the psychosocial changing process of upper grade students expelled from local private university. For this purpose, interview were conducted with 15 students. The collected data were analyzed using a Grounded Theory. As a result, 183 concepts, 54 sub categories, and 18 essential categories were derived. The results of the process analysis showed that the process of psychosocial changing is composed of seven steps Find a sense of belonging', 'Find fun', 'Stop thinking', 'Experience the (outside) world', 'Career decision', 'Immersion', 'Finish the course'. The results of this study were compared with previous researches, and the newly discovered points and future research topics and points to be considered in local private university field were discussed.
Nowadays Korean society has a fast growing population of North Korean immigrant youth. Especially, North Korean immigrant youth, who are discontinuing formal education, experience difficulties in social exclusion and adaptation. Therefore, the purpose of this study was to understand the experiences of adaptation and social support of North Korean immigrant youth discontinuing formal education, and to seek affirmative supporting plans and solutions for their adaptation. The methodology utilized for this study was a case study research. On the basis of the results and categorization, 'a network between overall categories and of early adaptation' was derived. The major findings of this study are summarized as follows. First, the participants of this study experienced major difficulties during 'economical adaptation', and their economical adaptation was strongly interrelated with their 'educational adaptation'. The discontinuing of their education resulting from their fleeing period caused 'academic differential and age disparity.' Thus they could not enroll in the formal education system, and their insufficient educational background resulted in low wages and overwork due to manual labor jobs. Second, participants recognized 'interpersonal relations' as the most essential factor in adaptation, and 'social support' from the interpersonal relations played an important role in adaptation to and comfort in Korean society. 'Interactions with South Koreans' was recognized as a significant resource for gaining informational and appraisal support, but was not activated satisfactorily. On the other hand, interaction with North Korean immigrants was avoided by the reason that 'there's nothing to learn', however emotional support from North Korean immigrants of close relationship played an important role in participants' adaptation, especially in all aspects of psychological adaptation. Third, participants experienced a lot of difficulties and stresses in their 'physical health and psychological adaptation'. Their chronic diseases worsened by remaining untreated, and female perceived symptoms were observed more often than in male. Meanwhile, excessive 'stresses' from the unfamiliar environment of South Korea negatively affected their psychological adaptation. However, they were satisfied with sense of liberty and security from living in a democratic society.
This study examined the concept and status, research issues, and pragmatic and policy issues of school-dropout adolescents. As the number of school-dropout adolescents has been increasing in Korea since 2006, more attentions have been given to these adolescents academically, intervention and policy-wise. Some of the research topics on them include types of school-dropouts, their socio-environmental factors, and reasons for the increase of school-dropouts. In reality, the government is required to provide them with opportunities to cope with their dropping out of schools by preparing the career guidance for them and to resolve the issues of their returning to or continuing in school education and their welfare.
This study aimed to examine the influence of negative life events on delinquency through a dual-mediation of depression and impulsivity among out-of-school adolescents. For the purpose, using a sample of adolescents who were out of school at the point of participating in the 1st survey of the Panel Survey of School Dropouts and Model 6 of the PROCESS macro for SPSS, this study analyzed the direct influence of negative life events on delinquency as well as the mediation and dual-mediation effects of depression and impulsivity. The main results are as follows. First, out-of-school adolescents' negative life events had a significant positive influence on delinquency. Second, out-of-school adolescents' depression did not mediate the influence of negative life events on delinquency. Third, out-of-school adolescents' impulsivity mediated the influence of negative life events on delinquency. Fourth, out-of-school adolescents' depression and impulsivity dual-mediated the influence of negative life events on delinquency. Based on these results, this study discussed diverse strategies to prevent the delinquency of out-of-school adolescents who experienced negative life events.
The purpose of this study is to verify whether social support for single parents in leisure, culture, and info-communication areas has the moderating effect on the impact of stress situations on academic continuity in single parents. To this end, technical statistics and logistic analysis were conducted on 248 single parents who were pregnant or pregnant at the age of 18 or older and raised their children after childbirth. As a result, one out of every four beneficiaries were involved, increasing the possibility of academic continuation by adjusting the stress-induced tendency of single parents to stop studying due to leisure, culture, and information and communication expenses. These results show that leisure, culture, and information and communication support are effectively contributing to improving the academic sustainability of single parents who want to stop studying due to stress relief and stress. Therefore, it is necessary to strengthen leisure, culture, and social support in the information and communication sectors for the academic continuation of single parents of teenagers.
School absenteeism is considered one of the early predictors of school drop-out and serious delinquency or criminal behavior. The primary goal of the current study was to explore the protective and risk factors related to changing school absenteeism over time based on the ecological-systemic perspective. The data was derived from the Korean Children and Youth Panel Survey (KCYPS) using the 2011 and 2012 survey waves collected from 2,378 elementary school students. Using this data, Panel Fixed Effects Analysis was conducted. Major findings indicated that daily computer usage, parental abuse, school activity attendance, and school grades had an effect on students missing school days over time. Specifically, high levels of computer usage and parental abuse were related to increased school absenteeism, while high levels of school activity attendance and school grades were associated with decreased school absenteeism. These findings emphasized the importance of predictive intervention for children and suggested the need to construct a school absenteeism monitoring system in South Korea.
The purpose of this study is to verify relation between satisfaction of university education and royalty based on analysis of satisfaction survey result of enrolled all students in J regional university. The university royalty in addition to drop out rate is one of the key indicators of managing university performance and it is differentiated approach that has positive perspectives. Based on satisfaction survey results, first, there was a significant difference in satisfaction by school year and grade range. Second, the analysis result of logistic regression method that had been performed to verify the construct which affecting university royalty of students show that satisfaction with lecture, academic guidance, educational environment and self management in academic life were the significant impact on royalty. Also, the decision tree analysis show that top decision factor is self-satisfaction of university life to determine university royalty.
The purpose of this study was to determine whether the retention of university freshmen could be predicted using their peer relationships in a specific department. In this study, retention was defined as a student staying enrolled in their university for a certain period of time. Social relationships are formed through interaction between people, so both students' self-perceptions and others' perceptions of them must be accounted for, so we used a social network analysis that did so. We examined social networks visualizations that allowed for a rich interpretation of numerical information. Participants in this study were freshmen who enrolled in an undergraduate program in 2017, 2018, or 2019. We used the name generator method to determine how quantitative friendship network variables predicted the academic retention up to the first semester of 2020. Cox proportional hazard model analysis showed that the weighted indegree centrality with intimacy positively predicted retention. The results of this study can be used to identify and conduct interventions for students who may be likely to disenroll. However all of the students did not participate in the department, it was difficult to examine their entire peer networks. Thus, this study's results cannot be generalized because the participants are students of a specific major, so further research is needed to produce more generalizable results.

Objectives: The purpose of this study was to explore the influence of high school students' mental health on their academic achievement and school dropout rate by using longitudinal data. Methods: For this study, 153 high schools were randomly sampled on a nationwide scale. The descriptive data was collected from a school information internet site which is organized by the Korean Ministry of Education. We used the schools' mean scores on the Adolescent Mental Health Problem-Behavior Questionnaire-II (AMPQ-II) scale which was used for estimating students' mental health in the 2013 school-based mental health screening test. The data analysis was conducted by using hierarchical regression analysis. Results: The results of this study showed that the AMPQ-II scale's mean scores have significant effects on the following year's academic achievement and annual dropout rates. Especially, the AMPQ-II scale's mean scores tend to increase the school dropout rate in vocational schools. Conclusion: The finding of this study is that Korean high school students' mental health states significantly influence their academic achievement and school dropout rate.
