  • In this paper we survey the career awareness, demand, and preparation of the students of the department of mathematics education and provide basic data for establishment of career diversification strategies. For this we examined the followings: (1) department selected time and motivation, (2) satisfaction with the selection and training courses, (3) hope and change for a career after graduation, (4) related jobs and career awareness. As a result, most of the students over the course of the high school and middle school chose a career in mathematics education, the biggest motivation appeared to be due to selection was deemed suitable for individual aptitudes. Due to this reason he/she is satisfied with the selection and training process and the curriculum of mathematics education appeared to think it would be helpful to his/her career. It can be observed that the number of students increased to think of another job, depending on the grade ascent. Mostly due to the difficulty of major study as grade up, high competition and low success rate of teacher employment test, employment reduction in the number of teachers.

  • This study was to clarify the problems of questionnaires related to misconception researches of middle school chemistry and to prepare a ground for the correct misconception research for students. For these purposes, the questionnaires of the misconception researches related to chemistry in middle school were analyzed, and the mistakes of the questions which were used in 7th grade students were found, based on a definition of misconceptions in this study. Also, the errors in contents of the questionnaires were indicated. The results of the analysis revealed that most of the 7th grade students did not have misconceptions contrary to some of the previous researches conclusions. They only had no conceptions related to the contents. In order to support this analysis, two different questionnaire sets (questionnaire set A and B) for 182 7th grade students were used. After obtaining similar results to those of the previous researches by the questionnaire set A, the students' thoughts were examined by the questionnaire set B. From the results of this study, the correct answer rates of subjective questions were very low compared with those of objective questions in the questionnaire set A for 7th grade students. It was hard to find consistency among the results of the researches using the questionnaire set A. And many contents of the questions consisted of the questionnaire est A were not consisted with a definition of misconceptions. There were errors in the contents of the questions, too. The students classified as the havingscience-concepts group and the having-misconceptions group by the questionnaire set A were classified as the having-no-concepts group by the questionnaire set B.

  • The purpose of this study was to analyze variable-controlling strategy (below vcs) and the ability to infer the effect of variables in Middle school students who experienced 'Thinking Science' activities in a CASE program. For this study, 71 9th grade students experienced in CASE program for 2 years were selected as the experimental group and 72 students were selected as the control group. All students were tested with Science Reasoning TaskVII. The five types of variable-controlling strategy were extracted from students' response. According to the result of this study, the students experienced in CASE program was more successful in the variable-controlling strategy of length, quality, and shape than the control group. The types of reasoning ability of the variable effect intuitively were categorized as possibility of reasoning, impossibility of reasoning, and impossibility of reversible thinking. It has shown that the reasoning ability of the experimental group was higher than that of the control group in the length and thickness variable effect. The results of this study implied that the variable controlling activities in CASE program could be effective for learning variable controlling, and eventually, for the development of reasoning ability of the variable controlling effect. In the ability to infer the effects of variables to get difficult Intuitively, both groups were similar to the rate of cognitive level reached to the formal operation in generalization, and the student of experimental group was 1.5 times faster than the control group.

  • The purpose of this paper was to evaluate how students apply prior knowledge or experience in solving algebra word problems from the chain of signification-based perspective. Three middle school students were evaluated in this case study. The results showed that the subjects formed similarities in the process of applying knowledge needed for solving a problem. The student A and C used semi-open-end formulas and closed formulas as solutions. They then formed concrete shape for each solution using the chain of signification that was applied for solution by forming procedural similarity. At this time, the chain of signification could be the combination of numbers, words, and pictures (such as diagrams or graphs) or just numbers or words. On the other hand, the student C who recognized closed formulas and her own rule as a solution method could not formulate completely procedural similarity due to many errors arising from number information. Nonetheless, all of the subjects showed something in common in the process of coming up with a algorithm that was semi-open-end formula or closed formula.

  • The purpose of the study is to develop a science writing program for middle school students and to analyze the effects of this program. The program consists of twenty-one 10-minute long sessions in 2 chapters (stimulus and response; the structure and function of plants) from the $2^{nd}$ year middle school textbooks. The team selected themes in science writing that can cultivate multiple facets of creativity in students: flexibility, originality and elaboration. The format of the science writing was diverse. The program was conducted through worksheets, and there was separate section within the worksheet for teacher to give feedback to students. The science writing program with teacher's feedback improved students' scientific creativity(p<.01). It seems like teacher's feedback is critical in checking students' concept and boosting students' creativity. The program is statistically effective in improving students' flexibility(p<.01), however it is not the case for improving on their originality and ability to elaborate(p>.05). We assumed that the relatively extensive portion of the writing was not suitable to improve students' ability to elaborate their ideas further as well as fostering originality. In order to improve the students' creativity and ability to elaborate, there is a need to adjust the amount of science writing, content, time.

  • In this study, we investigated the possibility of using science laboratory reports in identifying students' ideas about discrepant events. A specially designed science laboratory report was developed in this study, and used to collect the information about students' responses toward discrepant events. A total of 839 laboratory reports on the solubility of gas, combustion, and the electrical conductivity of a solution were analyzed. Students' responses in the laboratory reports were classified into eight types; rejection, reinterpretation, exclusion, uncertainty, peripheral theory change, theory change, maintenance of scientific conception, and regressive theory change. In addition, reinterpretation and theory change were further classified into several subcategories. The characteristics of students' responses in this study were discussed in comparison with those of previous studies.
