  • A $32{\times}32$ pixels foveated (linear-polar) structure retina chip with the function of local-light adaptation for edge detection has been designed and fabricated using CMOS technology. Human retina can detect a wide range of light intensity. In this study, we use the biologically-inspired visual signal processing mechanism that consists of photoreceptors, horizontal cells, and bipolar cells in order to implement the function of edge detection in the retina chip. For a local-light adaptive function, the size of receptive field is changed locally according to the input light intensity. The spatial distribution of sensing pixels in the foveated retina chip has the advantages of selective reduction of image data and good resolution in central part to carry out the elaborate image processing with still enough resolution in the outer parts. The designed chip has been fabricated using standard $0.6\;{\mu}m$ double-poly triple-metal CMOS technology and optimized using HSPICE simulator.

  • This paper describes a hardware design of hash function processor which implements Korean Hash Algorithm Standard HAS-160. The HAS-160 processor compresses a message with arbitrary lengths into a hash code with a fixed length of 160-bit. To achieve high-speed operation with small-area, arithmetic operation for step-operation is implemented by using a hybrid structure of 5:3 and 3:2 carry-save adders and carry-select adder. It computes a 160-bit hash code from a message block of 512 bits in 82 clock cycles, and has 312 Mbps throughput at 50 MHz@3.3-V clock frequency. The designed HAS-160 processor is verified by FPGA implementation, and it has 17,600 gates on a layout area of about $1\;mm^2$ using a 0.35-${\mu}m$ CMOS cell library.

  • In this paper, special purpose arithmetic unit for mobile graphics accelerator is designed. The designed processor supports six operations, such as $1/{\chi}$, $\frac{1}{{\sqrt{x}}$, $log_2x$, $2^x$, $sin(x)$, $cos(x)$. The processor adopts 2nd-order polynomial minimax approximation scheme based on IEEE floating point data format to satisfy accuracy conditions and has 5-stage pipeline structure to meet high operational rates. The SFAU processor consists of 23,000 gates and its estimated operating frequency is about 400 Mhz at operating condition of 65nm CMOS technology. Because the processor can execute all operations with 5-stage pipeline scheme, it has about 400 MOPS(million operations per second) execution rate. Thus, it can be applicable to the 3D mobile graphics processors.

  • This paper describes the link layer and physical layer of the Serial ATA which is the next generation for parallel ATA specification that defines data transfer between PC and peripheral storage devices. The link layer consists of CRC generation/error detection, 8b/10b decoding/encoding, primitive generation/detection block. For the physical layer, it includes CDR(Cock Data Recovery), transmission PLL, serializer/de-serializer. It also includes generation and receipt of OOB(Out-Of-Band) signal, impedance calibration, squelch circuit and comma detection/generation. Additionally, this chip includes TCB(Test Control Block) and BIST(Built-In Selt Test) block to ease debugging and verification. It is fabricated with 0.18${\mu}{\textrm}{m}$ standard CMOS cell library. All the function of the link layer operate properly. For the physical layer, all the blocks operate properly but the data transfer is limited to the 1.28Gbps. This is doe to the affection or parasitic elements and is verified with SPICE simulation.

  • This paper describes a design of variable-length FFT/IFFT processor (VL_FCore) for OFDM-based multi-standard communication systems. The VL_FCore adopts in-place single-memory architecture, and uses a hybrid structure of radix-4 and radix-2 DIF algorithms to accommodate various FFT lengths in the range of $N=64{\times}2^k\;(0{\leq}k{\leq}7)$. To achieve both memory size reduction and the improved SQNR, a two-step conditional scaling technique is devised, which conditionally scales the intermediate results of each computational stage. The performance analysis results show that the average SQNR's of 64~8,192-point FFT's are over 60-dB. The VL_FCore synthesized with a $0.35-{\mu}m$ CMOS cell library has 23,000 gates and 32 Kbytes memory, and it can operate with 75-MHz@3.3-V clock. The 64-point and 8,192-point FFT's can be computed in $2.25-{\mu}s$ and $762.7-{\mu}s$, respectively, thus it satisfies the specifications of various OFDM-based systems.

  • This paper describes the design of new method of propagation delay measurement in micro and nanostructures during characterization of ASIC standard library cell. Providing more accuracy timing information about library cell (NOR, AND, XOR, etc.) to the design team we can improve a quality of timing analysis inside of ASIC design flow process. Also, this information could be very useful for semiconductor foundry team to make correction in technology process. By comparison of the propagation delay in the CMOS element and result of analog SPICE simulation, we can make assumptions about accuracy and quality of the transistor's parameters. Physical implementation of phase error accumulation method(PHEAM) can be easy integrated at the same chip as close as possible to the device under test(DUT). It was implemented as digital IP core for semiconductor manufacturing process($0.11{\mu}m$, GL130SB). Specialized method helps to observe the propagation time delay in one element of the standard-cell library with up-to picoseconds accuracy and less. Thus, the special useful solutions for VLSI schematic-to-parameters extraction (STPE), basic cell layout verification, design simulation and verification are announced.

  • This paper describes a design of AES-based CCMP(Counter mode with CBC-MAC Protocol) core for IEEE 802.11i wireless LAN security. To maximize the performance of CCMP core, two AES cores are used, one is the counter mode for data confidentiality and the other is the CBC node for authentication and data integrity. The S-box that requires the largest hardware in ARS core is implemented using composite field arithmetic, and the gate count is reduced by about 27% compared with conventional LUT(Lookup Table)-based design. The CCMP core was verified using Excalibur SoC kit, and a MPW chip is fabricated using a 0.35-um CMOS standard cell technology. The test results show that all the function of the fabricated chip works correctly. The CCMP processor has 17,000 gates, and the estimated throughput is about 353-Mbps at 116-MHz@3.3V, satisfying 54-Mbps data rate of the IEEE 802.11a and 802.11g specifications.

  • This paper presents design of a wide tuning range digitally controlled oscillator(DCO) for Mobile-DTV applications. DCO is the key element of the ADPLL block that generates oscillation frequencies. We proposed a binary delay chain(BDC) structure, for wide tuning range DCO, modifying conventional fixed delay chain. The proposed structure generates oscillation frequencies by delay cell combination which has a variable delay time of $2^i$ in the range of $0{\leq}i{\leq}n-1$. The BOC structure can reduce the number of delay cells because it make possible to select delay cell and resolution. We simulated the proposed DCO by Cadence's Spectre RF tool in 1.8V chartered $0.18{\mu}m$ CMOS process. The simulation results showed 77MHz~2.07GHz frequency range and 3ps resolution. The phase noise yields -101dBc/Hz@1MHz at Mobile-DTV maximum frequency 1675MHz and the power consumption is 5.87mW. The proposed DCO satisfies Mobile-DTV standards such as ATSC-M/H, DVB-H, ISDB-T, T-DMB.
