  • Ferritin is known to be the principle iron-storage protein in a wide variety of rganisms. The electrophoretic mobility and immunological cross-reactivity of dog splenic ferritin were compared with those of horse, bovine, and pig splenic ferritin after isolation using heat treatment, salting out, column chromatography, and ultrafiltration. These isolation methods allowed the recovery of $\~84{\mu}g$ of the ferritin per g of spleen. The iron content in the dog ferritin was $22.7\%$, which appeared to be higher than those in the other mammalian ferritins tested. The electrophoretic mobility of the dog ferritin under nondenaturing conditions was similar to its bovine counterpart, whereas it was more identical to pig and horse ferritins on an SDS-polyacrylamide gel. The molecular weight of the dog ferritin subunit was 19.5 kDa on an SDS-polyacrylarnide gel, and the subunit was unable to bind with iron. The polyclonal anti-dog ferritin raised in rats was able to cross-react with the pig, bovine, and horse ferritins, upon Ouchterlony double immunodiffusiion. A Western blot analysis also revealed that the anti-dog ferritin, which specifically bound with the dog ferritin subunit, could also recognize the horse, bovine, and pig ferritin subunits and the maximum cross-reactivity was exhibited with the pig ferritin subunit, indicating that the dog ferritin is immunochemically more similar to the pig ferritin than its other mammalian counterparts. Accordingly, these results elucidate the biochemical and immunochemical characteristics of dog ferritin that might have a potential to be applied as an oral iron supplement to treat iron deficiency anemia.

  • In traditional message ferrying schemes, only ferries carry messages between partitioned networks. In this paper, we propose a new approach to make both ferries and mobile nodes carry messages so that we reduce message delivery delay in disruption tolerant networks. We evaluate our scheme against conventional message ferrying in terms of message delivery delay, throughput, ferry buffer usage and mobile nodes buffer usage.

  • Background: Ferritin is used to detect iron overload in patients with chronic red blood cell transfusions. Although ferritin reflects the amount of iron storage in the body, it may increase nonspecifically in inflammation and infection. This study analyzed the cause of increased ferritin and the association with a red blood cell (RBC) transfusion. Methods: The medical records of patients who visited the authors' hospital from January to December 2017 and underwent a ferritin test were reviewed retrospectively. Hyperferritinemia was defined as a ferritin level more than 1,000 ng/mL. The causes of hyperferritinemia were investigated by examining the laboratory findings and medical records. Results: The results revealed 417 cases of hyperferritinemia in 238 patients during the period. The most common diseases were hematologic malignancies from 125 cases (30.0%) in 31 patients and infectious diseases were the second most common. Iron overload was suspected in 119 cases in 33 patients, and 12 patients (76 cases) were transfused with more than 8 units of RBC for 1 year before the test. Conclusion: In hyperferritinemia, the rate of iron overload is high considering the underlying diseases and chronic RBC transfusion. To determine iron storage status accurately, it will be helpful to measure the C-reactive protein (CRP) and iron saturation in the ferritin test. Careful attention should be paid to habitual iron formulations and frequent transfusions due to the possibility of iron overload.

  • Planning railferry system in Korea-China trade routes, the overall evaluation and customer response are coming under spotlight in a preference and feasibility perspective. Persistent Railferry issue has been an area of study for the last decade. But until now, a surveyor or the evaluation from the actual users were exceptionally rate. Consequently, there is a need for a more detailed study into the practical issues such as customer response and railferry demand etc. Using a questionnaire survey from actual users, this paper examines the underlying evaluation on the Railferry system both in terms of demand and preference. The research questions were analyzed on data collected from almost 150 users in Korea. A range of arguments and expected problems were summarized. The results in general find a negative relationship between railferry preference and respondents' work experience. Findings in the reasons respondents are objecting the new railferry system, the suitable cargo type of railferry, and the possible barriers to introduce the system are discussed. Nonetheless further researches into railferry system as a possible alternative for Korea-China-Japan corridor should be followed in the near future.

  • A rapid growth of interregional trade between China and Korea requires new development and expansion of ports. Currently, there is no rail-ferry system between China and Korea, however, a rapid growth of car-ferry industry shows possibilities. Several candidate cities and regions in East part of China and West part of Korea are selected. We identified times in clearance and station-to-station services as major benefits. We compared three transport modes including candidate cities and regions: container ships, car-ferry and rail-ferry. We used AHP (Analytic Hierarchy Process) as an evaluation method to select most competitive rail-ferry routes between two countries. We also used 7-point Likert scales to find out bottlenecks and factors to introduce rail-ferry services as other questionnaires. As a result, Rail Ferry System(RFS) is a little expensive due to wagon loading efficiency in cargo hold of the ship compared to Car Ferry System or Liner Shipping System. But RFS is recommendable in case of Block Train transport between Korea and EU area by may of TCR and TSR comparing Car Ferry System, because it can reduce total transport cost and connecting procedure at border lines of passing countries.

  • A state-based peridynamic model is able to describe a general constitutive model from the standard continuum theory. The response of a material at a point is dependent on the deformation of all bonds connected to the point within the nonlocal horizon region. Therefore, the state-based peridynamic model permits both the volume and shear changes of the material which is promising to reproduce the complicated dynamic brittle fracture phenomena, such as crack branching, secondary cracks, cascade cracks, crack coalescence, etc. In this paper, the two-dimensional state-based peridynamic model for a linear elastic plane stress solid is employed. The damage model incorporates the energy release rate and the peridynamic energy potential. For brittle glass materials, the impact of the crack-parallel compressive stress waves on the crack branching pattern is investigated. The peridynamic solution for this problem captures the main features, observed experimentally, of dynamic crack propagation and branching. Cascade cracks under strong tensile loading and secondary cracks are also well reproduced with the state-based peridynamic simulations.

  • An iron-storage protein, ferritin is a spherical shell consisting of 24 H-and L-chain subunits. Soluble form of fused($F_{H}+F_{L}$ chain) ferritin was separated from disrupted recombinant E. coii cells, followed by silica powder adsorption. Ferritin was recovered from silica-poweder by distilled water, which was applied to gel filtration chromatography(GFC). Collected ferritin fractions from the GFC were assayed via iron-uptake and its molecular weight determined using GF-HPLC. Fused ferritin showed a higher activity than the M- or L- chain ferritin by two times.
