  • This paper proposes an application of unscented Kalman filter(UKF) for localization of an underwater robot. The method compares the bathymetric measurement from the robot with the seabed terrain information. For the measurement of bathymetric range to seabed, it uses a DVL which typically yields four range data together with velocity of the robot. Usual extended Kalman filter is not appropriated for application in case of terrain navigation, since it is not feasible to derive Jacobian for the bathymetric range measurement. Though particle filter(PF) is a nice solution which doesn't require Jacobian and can deal with non-linear and non-Gaussian system and measurement, it suffers from heavy computational burden. The paper compares the localization performance and the computation time of the UKF approach and PF approach. Though there have been some UKF methods which are used for underwater navigation, application of the UKF for bathymetric localization is rare. Especially, the proposed method uses only four range data whereas many of the bathymetric navigation methods have used multibeam sonar which yields hundreds of scanned range data. The result shows feasibility of the UKF approach for terrain-based navigation using small numbers of range data.

  • Recently, There has been increasing concern about WLAN-based indoor positioning system. Most of the existing WLAN-based positioning systems use a fingerprinting method as a main approach. In the fingerprinting approach, the accuracy of the location of a mobile objects is proportional to the number of reference points. However, depending on the increasing number of reference points in the training phase, it requires more time and effort to create fingerprint database. To solve these problems, we propose the new indoor positioning algorithm that calculate the distance between a mobile objects and an AP using the information of surrounding environment WLAN based APs and applied the particle filter to the proposed algorithm in order to improve the accuracy of the estimated location in this paper. To implement this algorithm, at first environmental information database such as wall, iron door, glass door, partition etc. existing in the periphery of the AP should be established. The positioning use attenuation model and path loss model. Our experimental results with proposed algorithm are verified that the positioning accuracy was low but solved the problems with fingerprinting, compared with other positioning algorithms.

  • This paper reports a localization method of a mobile robot using ceiling image. The ceiling has landmarks which are not distinguishablefrom one another. The location of every landmark in a map is given a priori while correspondence is not given between a detected landmark and a landmark in the map. Only the initial pose of the robot relative to the landmarks is given. The method uses particle filter approach for localization. Along with estimating robot pose, the method also associates a landmark in the map to a landmark detected from the ceiling image. The method is tested in an indoor environment which has circular landmarks on the ceiling. The test verifies the feasibility of the method in an environment where range data to walls or to beacons are not available or severely corrupted with noise. This method is useful for localization in a warehouse where measurement by Laser range finder and range data to beacons of RF or ultrasonic signal have large uncertainty.

  • This paper describes the vision-based system to track road signs from within a moving vehicle. The proposed system has the standard architecture with particle filter due to its robust tracking performance in complex environment. In the case of tracking road signs in real environment, it has a great difficulty in predicting time series data by reason of an occlusion due to an obstacle and the rapid change of objects on roads. To overcome this problem and improve the tracking performance, this paper proposes the algorithm using an autoregressive model as an state transition model which has affine parameters as states and using robust statistics for determining occlusion due to obstacles. The experiments of this paper show that the proposed method is efficient for real time tracking of road signs and performs well in road signs under occlusion due to obstacles.

  • There are two main technologies to implement cloud effect in flight simulator, cloud modeling using particle system and texture mapping. In former case, this approach may cause a low frame rate while unrealistic cloud effect is observed in latter case. To Solve this problem, in this paper, we propose how to apply fog effect into camera to display more realistic cloud effect with high frame rate. The proposed method is tested with massive terrain database environment through implemented software by using OpenSceneGraph. As a result, compared to texture mapping method, the degree of difference on frame rate is 1 or 2Hz while the cloud effect is significantly improved as realistic as particle system.

  • We suggest the dynamic stroke generation algorithm that provides frame-to-frame coherence in 3D non-photorealistic animations. We use 3D particle system to eliminate the visual popping effect in the animated scene. Since we have located particles on the 3D object's surface, the coherence is maintained when the object or the camera is moving in the scene. Also, this algorithm maintains the coherence when camera is zooming in/out. However, the brush strokes on the surface also zoom in/out. This result(too large or too small brush strokes) can not represent hand-crafted brush strokes. To remove this problem, we suggest stroke generation algorithm that dynamically maintains the number of brush stroke and its size during camera zoom in/out.

  • The paper experimentally verifies the performance of Terrain-Aided Navigation (TAN) using an interferometric radio altimeter, which is recently used due to its accuracy. First, we propose a TAN system that utilizes an interferometric radio altimeter as a measurement system. Second, we implement extended Kalman filter, unscented Kalman filter, and particle filter to evaluate the performance of TAN according to the selection of filters and the difference of environments.

  • The precision of sensors' position is particularly important in the application of road extraction or digital map generation. In general, the various ranging solution systems such as GPS, Total Station, and Laser Ranger have been employed for the position of the sensor. Basically, the ranging solution system has problems that the signal may be blocked or degraded by various environmental circumstances and has low temporal resolution. To overcome those limitations a IMU/range integrated system could be introduced. In this paper, after pointing out the limitation of extended Kalman filter which has been used for workhorse in navigation and geodetic community, the two sampling based nonlinear filters which are sigma point Kalman filter using nonlinear transformation and carefully chosen sigma points and particle filter using the non-gaussian assumption are implemented and compared with extended Kalman filter in a simulation test. For the ranging solution system, the GPS and Total station was selected and the three levels of IMUs(IMU400C, HG1700, LN100) are chosen for the simulation. For all ranging solution system and IMUs the sampling based nonlinear filter yield improved position result and it is more noticeable that the superiority of nonlinear filter in low temporal resolution such as 5 sec. Therefore, it is recommended to apply non-linear filter to determine the sensor's position with low degree position sensors.

  • Radome aberration error causes degradation of miss distance as well as stability of high maneuver missile system with RF seeker. A study about radome compensation method is important in this kind of missile system design. Several kinds of methods showed good compensation performance in their paper. Proposed adaptive Particle filter estimates line of sight rate excluding the radome induced error. This paper shows effectiveness of adaptive Particle filter as compensation method of radome aberration error. Robust performance of this filter depends on external aiding measurement, target acceleration. Tuning of system error covariance can make this filter unsensitive against the error of target acceleration information. This paper demonstrates practical usage of adaptive Particle filter for reducing miss distance and increasing stability against disturbance of radome aberration error through performance analysis.

  • Ultra-tightly coupled GPS/INS integration has been reported to show better navigation performance than that of other integration methods such as loosely coupled and tightly coupled integration. This paper uses the particle filter for ultra-tightly coupled GPS/INS integration and analyzes the navigation performance according to vehicle trajectory and the number of particles. The navigation performance of particle filter is compared with those of EKF and UKF.
